Can the umps get some education ffs. Feels like they used to at least recognise rucks. 20 possessions for a mid is a poor game, and 25 is average these days.

Blokes polling 3 votes all over the place for 25 possession games, no goals.

4 goals as a forward these days is a game changer but will likely yield you nothing. Hogan's year for example was epic.

Meanwhile, look at a bloke like Sam Taylor who apparently allowed 1 contested mark against himself all year ffs. Couldn't have been more dominant in his position. Or even Wilkie who is regularly the most influential bloke on the ground.

What are they actually watching? It's hard to be this stupid.

I don't reckon Cripps ever gets a hard tag. He is just not that damaging. 30 possessions from Cripps is not something you really lose sleep over.

30 possessions from Bont and it is likely game over.

Bont has more competition for votes in the Bulldogs midfield than Cripps does in the Carlton midfield and the umpires usually vote for midfielders, Carlton's other best players like Curnow, Weitering and Tom De Koning aren't going to take many votes off him.

Bont has to compete with Treloar, Libba and Macrae for votes but he doesn't have to compete with Macrae for votes next year.

Looks like my opinion of the worth of these awards is justified once again

MOTY, GOTY, Brownlow, Rising Star all just rubbish for the media and headlines and nothing else. Haven't meant shit in years

Harley 1 vote v us when he got absolutely owned by Windhager in the 2nd half and also got suspended 😵‍💫

How can they give a vote for the "Fairest and Best" (literally named in that order by design) when you end up getting suspended?
The award is a joke these days, how can anyone take it seriously? A bunch of them should be wiped from history. It's now the least significant award... and All Australian is not far behind.

I didn't watch the Brownlow but did see a bunch of photos from it.

I don't really notice when they are playing but a lot of footy players look really really weird. You notice it in club portraits sometimes but it's really noticeable when standing next to others.

Some of the partners looked a bit weird too.

Plenty of footy players' girlfriends are anorexic. It's pretty sad to see actually, think they should bin the red carpet stuff, it's unhealthy. A few players seem to prefer their women to have the bodies of young boys.

I like that Yasmin Dursmaa and Harley Reid are an item, imagine how much they have in common. Sweet.

A fair few Saints in that collection of Briwnlow medalists. Been a while now though.

Funny to see Brad Hardie and Johnny Platten kept their hairstyles. Doesn't really suit the older gentleman.

Nick Daicos looks like a robot.

Yeah definitely agree about all the red carpet crapola 👍

Worst goal of the year nominations ever.
It was a purposeful setup due to him being ineligible for the rising star. Why do you think there were two average as **** Nick Daicos goals included? To basically force votes towards him.

The AFL awards are basically a huge fix at this point.

Hard to claim Sydney have had less handouts when 5 of their best 22 are academy handouts and of those 5, 3 are AA level and another is their captain.

Much easier to be 'well run' when you get cheap access to top talents in the draft so you can regenerate while playing in prelims and gfs.

Maybe they develop talent better. Less access but more success in maximising talent

I'm probably saying what you already know here, but the suspension is confirmed after the votes are given.

So the only way around it is to have umpires give a top 5 or 6, and eliminate the suspended players after the event. So if a player got 3 votes but got rubbed out, everyone else gets bumped up. It sounds simple enough, but what happens if there's a big brawl and a bunch of players get rubbed out. Extremely unlikely, but has to be planned for.

The more appropriate solution is just to f*** off the fairness factor. Especially now that you get get rubbed out for having too much momentum in a tackle etc. I don't think we should be stuffing around with being eligible for a maximum of 3 offences with a maximum of 3 weeks, or arguing about whether a 1 weeker would really have been 2 if it wasn't a brownlow candidate etc.

Just get rid of it.

Or promote another award to the big one. Or invest in a panel of experts to award votes for every game. The coaches are too busy trying to bounce the ball straight and making sure the guy on the mark isn't shuffling around, or watching for a fingernail above the shoulder, or positioning themselves correctly to decide these things. Not knocking the umpires here, it's what's expected of them.

He was best on for three quarters

On SM-S908E using BigFooty.com mobile app
Personally thought he had a huge 3rd qtr for memory but was pretty quiet for the rest of the match. I may be wrong. Had 30 disposals

Marshall could have easily polled in any of the last 3 games

Win Richmond 25 disposals - 25 HO - 3 goals - votes 0
Win Geelong 28 disposals - 17 CP - 10 Clearances - 1 goal - votes 0
Win Carlton 19 disposals - 9 CP - 4 Clearances - 37 HO - 1 goal - votes 0

Cripps would have got all 9 votes with those numbers.

The Brownlow is as much about popularity of players amongst the umpires as it players abilities. Cripps is a huge presence in the midfield and is under the umpires eyes permanently and everything he does is dynamic. I think they got the winner of the award correct, but its the lack of recognising the other non glamour players games where the umpires get it very wrong.

The quick fix would be take the voting away from the umpires and have other match officials who are removed from any biaises do the voting. It has been raised after every Brownlow for the past 20 years and the AFL havent changed it, so nothing is going to be altered. Everyone knows its a flawed system but the AFL arent motivated to change it.

Stopped watching the Brownlow years ago...don't feel like I missed much.

It's got as much weight as any other award these days that gets much less fanfare (AFLPA/AFLCA awards)I don't think it holds as much as it used to.

Cripps probably wins regardless but some of the votes are just nonsense. They've clearly mixed up the Daicos brothers in at least 1 game as well.

Remember, the umpires saw the head high contact and didn’t even bother to give a free kick (which it should have been more than a two week suspension). Heeney got a goal directly from that hit, then a goal 50 seconds later whilst we scrambled around to get somebody else on him, due to Webster being off with the blood rule. That’s two goals in a minute in the lead up to half time. Pretty memorable…

For somebody that whines to the umpires so much, Cripps is lucky to get so many votes!
