One player I’m interested to see this year is 6’5” Xavier Walsh , still only 19 but a bit of a man-child , he always appeared to have that streak of “nasty” in him. He doesn’t turn 20 until next September, so he should have a lot of physical development left in him …….. Could he become that hard bodied defender ala Steven May or Jacob Weitering for Port Adelaide, he’s been contracted until the end of 2026 , so someone must have a similar opinion. I am hoping for a breakout season for Xavier.

In last years Internal Club Trial I vividly remember watching an unfamiliar player launch like superman to touch a ball that was always goal bound. My immediate conclusion was that this kid was a dead set competitor if he was willing to attempt a kamikaze effort to a meaningless lost cause. That kid was Xavier Walsh, & I’ve held enormous wraps on him ever since.

Just because a player demands the ball and drives high standards in themself (JHF), that doesn’t automatically mean they would make a great captain.

No need to even be mentioning JHF as captain until 5 years time. Let the guy develop and be a start of the game without worrying about captaincy.

Passing judgement on player leadership styles without first hand knowledge of their interactions with teammates is pointless.
There are many elements to leadership.

A wise man once told me that the most important aspect of leadership is leading by example.

How have Rozee and Butters led by example in finals?

Rozee doesn't really come across as confident in press conferences. He will take some time.

The press conference of Butters are always good and you can feel a real love of football with him, a fantastic trait to have as a leader. There are rumours on this forum that Rozee is not a big footballing guy.

There was a time recently Butters was told to slow down in practice by Hinkley. That's the type of captain you want.

I think Rozee will have a good year this year as a player and hopefully grow more into the role. It's only been a small amount of time.

When the new captaincy came up, I thought Rozee above Butters but now I prefer Butters. Having said that, Rozee has time to work on it and hopefully with a new coach soon enough, the basic loser philosophies of the team can be thrown out and some Port Adelaide creed put back in the mix.

Logically it would mean you are saying that Rozee and Butter are natural leaders.

Natural leaders don't need time. It comes naturally to them.

QED.

lol in all due respect that is a load of shit. There is a clear reason why most captains are 26 or older.

I am not sure that this is the case. From an ex young player he was described as the most intimidating player in the group in terms of training standards and expectations. There are different styles of leadership and I think he does a lot that we don’t see or expect based on how he comes across in the media.
Interesting. That's good to hear because imo he comes across as a player who makes excuses for his teams poor performances. That's not a leadership style I want.

Yeah for the record I definitely dont think its something that should happen in the next 5 years... but I think it will happen.

On another note, this is the year to unleash JHF.

He only attended 54% CBAs compared to Butters 66% but had more average centre clearances and more average clearances. We have added SPP, Berry, Richards to the forward line and we do not "need" our best midfielder playing there- doesn't mean he won't play there at all. 80% TOG-66% CBA=14% Forward.

I would have at least 2 of Rozee, Butters and JHF at every centre bounce. I cannot think of another midfield that has two genuine "burst" inside mids that match the quality of that trio. It offers us a real competitive advantage on the whole comp.

There is no better place to have a competitive advantage than in the guts. But there is no point having a competitive advantage if you don't use it.

Agree, but believe the TOG should be increased. Rest Rozee and JHF as our deepest forwards when not on the ball. Both playing 90% TOG.

Drew out hurts the quality of rotation with Wines, Butters I would have within that rotation and possibly a fourth for a small %. We struggle outside of Wines and Drew for a Phat Arsed Warrior to ‘get dirty’ if Mead or Jackson can cover Drew I’m interested in watching unfold. If they both can’t cover, Atkins may get early looks?

Sweet/Soldo, JHF, Butters, Wines - 50%
Sweet/Soldo, Rozee, Butters, Wines - 28%
Sweet/Soldo, JHF, Wines, Atkins/Jackson/Mead - 12%
Sweet/Soldo, Rozee, Wines, Atkins/Jackson/Mead - 10%

When Drew back, the 50% probably back to 42%, 28% back to 22%, the 12% up to 18% and 10% up to 18% also.

Don't know whether true but I've been hearing that Bergman potentially playing more on ball midfield and SPP too but believe its on a wing for him. Quite possible Mead to be more of a depth player or SUB if that's needed. Quite possibly Rozee to be the hybrid fwd/midfield with more time forward.

Bergman is an interesting one. His kicking turnovers were pretty bad, and if I recall his lack of generating scoring shots from his I50s was record breakingly bad. Now that could partly be our forward line but he would want to tidy that up if he wants to be a full time mid.

Burton when fit is easily in our best twenty three. Williams and Sinn would have to improve a fair bit.

I prefer Sinn on a wing too.

And I’m still a bit intrigued Burgoyne hasn’t been training more in defence after literally getting a perfect ten coaches votes in defence in our only winning final.

Not sure this has been true for quite some time.

I think it’s more of a body issue with him. At his age if he hasn’t got it right he probably never will but a strong pre season without injuries and I still think he has enough talent.

I actually thought he wasn’t as bad as many thought, and finished off the season better than most.

I reckon he should've been delisted.

I don’t think he’s that bad, good depth at worst, played over one fifty games and turns twenty eight in three hours so he is still in the age sweet spot.
