All of Sydney talls are average, yet they destroyed us in the prelims and sucked against the Brisbane the following week.

It's about the system.
Agreed it is about system, however Brisbane have 2 tall good defenders in Andrews and Payne. They weren't undersized like us at all. However it really didn't matter in the end, as their midfield slaughtered Sydney's.

Brisbane didn't allow the mids and half backs to deliver the ball with silver service..our lack of polishing the first quarter and lack of defensive pressure on their mids was the issue

Off topic but I did just chuckle at your avatar

The great roller coaster of hopes and expectations followed by despondency and despair

McDonald, McLean and Amartey. I know not technically 200cm, but pretty much. All bigger than our 2 key defenders.

There was times we had Logan Evans on one of them, meanwhile Esava was up forward doing absolutely nothing. Our midfield didn't do great, but our defence was horrendous. Bergman had his worst game for the year, so did Evans, so did BZT.

Lets have a look.

Zerk-Thatcher - 195cm
Aliir - 194cm
Bergman - 189cm

Ratugolea - 197cm

McLean - 197cm
Bogan McDonald - 195cm
Amartey - 195cm

It's all a bit close really. I personally think tallness is a bit overrated in footy. I mean, you need it to be a key position, no doubt but Steven May is 193cm.

I just looked up Luke Ryan and he's 186cm. Holy Moly.

Bergman plays taller than 189cm but if he's getting rag dolled by a bigger KPF then by all means, we need another solution unless he's killing him the other way.

Pretty much everyone played badly against Sydney.

You and I are agreeing on far too much lately ;)

Height is very overrated in defenders. It is but one of many things that impact the quality of a defender and a lot of those other things are adversely affected by additional height (eg kicking skills and agility).

The reason our defenders look short on occasions is because the game plan leaves them exposed to one on one contests in lots of space where every inch of extra reach is going to be critical. We saw that with Trent McKenzie - he was basically almost impossible to beat in most one on one contests (even against the likes of the King brothers who towered over him) but if he was left one out with only his opponent and grass it was difficult for him.

It was the same reason our smaller defenders looked like the Keystone Kops when the ball hit the deck sometimes, just lots of space and a great opportunity for one on ones. You get one guy goal side or with a step or a slow reaction and its good night nurse.

We generally agree but you have a certain predilection that I just can't condone. It makes me dirty just thinking about it.

Good point you make, except don’t know where you got those height numbers from for the Sydney forwards.

Amartey is 197cm, McLean is 198cm and McDonald is 197cm. All three of them are very tall, physical players, with a long reach. I couldn’t agree more that our whole team played shit, but they severely monstered our defenders with those 3.

I think those heights are direct from the AFL website.

I go to Footywire.

Some observations from the internal trial

JHF close to best on if not best
Lai's breakaway speed was eye-catching
Evans and Sinn very aggressive off half back
Burton and Atkins taking kick ins for their respective teams
Lukosius doing a bit of Westhoff role in certain situations. Played mainly forward but occasionally started on a wing and dropped back into defence
Berry copped a poke in the eye early and went off
Hugh Jackson laid some strong tackles early

Was Lai's ball distribution good?
