Honestly if Twomeys phantom is accurate, I'd love to see us trade 15 or 16, with 37, for a pick next and a late 20s/ early 30s Pick this year, with a haul of Hotton, Oliver and Gross. I do love Jack Whitlock, but don't think he's worth taking at the detriment of additional midfield depth
Interesting. I kinda think Whitlock gives us a pretty good look at having a solid forward line once Hogan and Stringer are gone.
If in 4 years our forward line is
Cadman Whitlock Gruzewski
Gothard Daniels Jones

I think we would be in a very strong position.

I personally quite like the idea of a spread of players and don't think any in our current range are going to move the needle in the next two years so am happy to invest. (Of course if something wild comes up for that price....sure)

After thinking about it.
If we get Taj and Oliver, I'll be happy with whoever the other guy is.
I feel like we are right in the spot of the draft where we can't go wrong. There's no pressure for us to pick from one of the top 5, 10 prospects and I feel we are almost guaranteed a good player sliding to us, plus clubs will likely be offering future first/equivalent to get back into the draft around our picks.

Would anyone happen to have a 'cheat sheet' for the players we might pick up with our first few picks? My mum wants to watch the draft but she has absolutely no idea about any of the players we might pick up. I'm not terribly knowledgeable either so I figured I'd come here to see if someone has something she can follow.

Perhaps have a look at Cal Twomey's Phantom Draft. It describes all of the players (that he thinks will be selected in the first round), so even if Giants select a different player, you/she can read the description. His PD is probably as close to what's likely to play out as anyone's, and the GWS selections have alternatives that we might look at (although a few of those are a bit shocking IMHO! e.g. Ned Bowman in first round).

Personally, I'm ambivalent about selecting Jack Whitlock (simply because I think we have a full group of KPFs), but the commentary from Kingers about selecting "best talent available rather than needs" indicates he'd be in the scope at those #15, #16 picks.

In that case, I'd be happy with Cal's selections of Whitlock, Taj Hotton and Harry Oliver. There's obviously a risk with selecting Hotton, but if it pays off, we could get the bargain selection of this draft.

If different players get through to our picks, then I'm still big on Xavier Lindsay, albeit as a "safe" pick, but whose skills absolutely would fit into our team's needs (and I'd have him an early talent anyway). Murphy Reid is tipped in some mock drafts to slide, and he'd be another that I'd happily snap up as an alternative. Notwithstanding the detractions on his athleticism, I think his skills are top notch.

If Logan Smith isn't bid before our #37 pick, then I'd be keen on a more pure midfield type, so someone like Jack Ough or Hugh Boxshall would fit for me. Tom Gross too, if he happened to slide.

GWS GIANTS

Steal a slider… or a juicy future pick

The Giants, again, are loaded at the top of the draft, holding three first-rounders: Picks 15, 16 and 21. Despite their hand, it seems unlikely they’ll be able to package up their picks and move up the draft order, so their best hope now would be for a top prospect to slide to them. The Giants have done a lot of work on Murray Bushrangers half-forward Joe Berry, who has interest from clubs with top-10 picks — and there is a scenario, albeit an unlikely one, where Berry slips to Pick 15 and the Giants take very little time to select him. They’re likely going to get some juicy offers for Picks 15 and 16 too — and with North Melbourne eyeing a move back into the first round, acquiring the Kangaroos’ future first-round selection could turn out to be a tremendous result.

Some interesting snippets in here ... I can only cite a couple of excerpts though:

The Giants are likely to bring in four players at the draft, but that could expand to five depending on who is available.

Both clubs believe there is a reluctance from any clubs to entertain offers to move up the draft board on Wednesday night, meaning they intend to cash in on their strong hands. “You need a club who is prepared to move back, which there’s no one out there saying they desperately want to move back,” Adrian Caruso, the Giants’ head of talent said. “But where we landed in the end is to keep our picks and get three very good players rather than trying to trade two or three good players for one.”

Caruso added: “We’re very confident in what we’ll be getting even with that third (first-round) pick. I feel like we’ve got enough names on the board that we’ll be happy with at that pick. But there’s also an understanding that if we did feel like we wanted to move it into next year or move it back, there’s hopefully going to be some options there for us."

“We’re very much best available. We don’t see any glaring list holes that we need to address. For us, it’s bringing in good talent that can support the game plan, those first two picks in particular.

“We know our list is always in transition mode in terms of the unknowns around some of the older guys and how long they’re going to hang on for. But we’re trying to plan for three or four years down the track.”
