Let's go early

Buckley Taylor Himmelberg
Ash Whitfield Idun

Cogs Green Kelly
Briggs Callaghan Cumming

Daniels Greene Bedford
Riccardi Hogan E.Himmelberg*

Ward Fantasia* Perryman Cadman

I can see a world where XO or Rowston take Wards spot. Or XO/Darcy are ahead of Fantasia.

I think another preseason and Cadman will start to be damaging. All of a sudden every line looks very damaging.
I think a year of focusing on being a wing will do Cumming a world of good. He's probably a natural half back but Perryman is so diligent back there. I had to leave out Conor Stone but I really want him to have some luck.

Drop yours below.

Hogan/Riccardi/Himmerlberg and Cadman is one to many talls imo, would swap out EH/Cadman for XO or maybe Darcy depending on how he's tracking but not expecting too much from him this year. Before XO went down with injury he was playing the best footy of his career would be more than happy to give him a go over a 4th tall. In theory Derksen probably the ideal third tall because he has the ruck craft to give Briggs a break and still hold his own while also being a goal kicking threat, Cadman might have more goal kicking upside and EH might (not sure) offer more as a ruck but Derksen can do both. If Cadman is ready to play and contribute I'd just roll with him as the third tall and figure out the chop out ruck some other way, maybe Riccardi can do more.

Yeah it probably is too tall. Clearly the way it's structured up is we need a tall that can do some ****ing and hold his structure when forward. I'm not sure about Derksen rucking....I'd probably be more inclined to have Riccardi play that role and bring Cadman in.....but if we are going after E.Himmelberg specifically it makes me think they really wanna fill that 200cm plus fwd/ruck hybrid.

I really like Derksen and Gruz...I guess it's just who shows up and makes it there own in pre-season.
Hogan and Riccardi both had an incredible run home so I don't see either of them being usurped just yet.

XO in the forward line is awesome ....if Fantasia is fit I think he's more lethal *if we get him.

I am really unconvinced about that wing role for Cumming. His ball use off the backline was a highlight and I we just haven't seen much of that going forward. If he can get that field kicking going into the forward half it could be a stroke of genius

I think with another pre-season training as a wing specialist he will fly

You’d think the coaching panel would be hoping for some fresh faces to force their way into the best 23 over the summer.
I’m optimistic Preuss will go past Keeffe as suggested. Cadman won’t replace the pressure lost with Lloyd. XO will likely play regularly. I’m hoping Fahey can force his way in and would love to see Aleer kick on as well as Gruzewski and Jones.
It will be a fun watch.

I definitely have hopes for big Preussy …. Be a hard match up

I'm hoping Rowston can get past Ward in the midfield.
I'm hopeful that Cadman or Gruz can make Keefe unplayable. I think we need to get games into Cadman with his contract being up anyway.
Ricca can play more of the Keefe role.
Aleer is a tough one with Haynes looking at that spot as well....unless they look at him as a Keefe replacement/1on1 defender to cover Taylor/Buckley.

I reckon Jones will make his way into the team. I'm hoping he has some scoring capacity as a small...

True. He did play an immobile 204cm forward and back up ruck who rarely took a mark. He may be prepared to try the 206cm version, if he can stay on the park.
I think Keefe's role is misunderstood.
His versatility is huge if we have an injury to a tall on any line.
Preuss is no where as athletic or mobile...Keefe clearly played his role this year...now I don't think that doesn't mean he is upgradable....I just don't think it'll be with a ruckman

I am very big on Jones. I hope the knee hasn't impacted his speed and agility long term

Cadman is not a replacement for Keeffe. You can’t expect a second year key forward who is way undersized to go up against the biggest players in the comp. They will dominate him.
Also, this is a huge offseason for Jake Riccardi. If he doesn’t level up his game then I can see us moving past him.

I normally start this thread after the National Draft is complete so we know our entire roster for the next season, but there's starting to be some discussion about 2024 already, so let's kick it off.

Trade week is complete, we can still pick up one DFA, but draftees are a month away. Nevertheless, we can start to discuss how the team for the 2024 season might shape up.

Well no...you'd put Riccardi in that role and send Cadman up the ground.
He's obviously gotta put some size on but he's not small. He played a lot this year compared to what I was expecting....I think he'll get games

That, I think, is closer to likelihood.

Cadman in for Keeffe (no-one's going to argue for Keeffe to be in a "best 22" even if the coach keeps picking him!). In reality, Cheese & Pez swap positions: Pez is the defender on the bench & Cheese is the winger. Isaac has some work to do to cement that role, though. XOH gets a bench spot to start, but is at risk of someone having a good preseason and taking that off him.

I would certainly agree with this as a "pass mark", while hoping for much more! Top 4 & a flag!!

Pass mark:
At least a top-six finish and probably a prelim

It’s still hard to believe the Giants were as good as they were in the second half of the 2023 season. From Round 13 onwards, they lost just three games - a tight Sydney Derby, a blowout against Port in Adelaide (which they got revenge for in the semi-final), and the ridiculously close prelim against Collingwood. They could’ve, and arguably should’ve, beaten the eventual premiers in front of 95,000-plus Magpies fans on that Friday night but they can’t dwell on that. They have to simply recapture whatever magic made them one of the hottest teams in the AFL over the course of the full 2024 campaign. Play at that level and they’re a clear top-four contender; there’s probably going to be a slight step back, because that’s what happens for most big risers - but not all of them. After all, Collingwood did alright a year after a one-point prelim loss, didn’t they...
