The question heading into this World Cup is have the other teams closed the gap on Australia since they have won last years World Cup.

The 3 obvious contenders will be : England, India and South Africa. With South Africa, they will have to be firing on all cylinders to beat Australia. India is probably the best all-round team, and the Womens Premier League has seen their players get the confidence and gap close year in year out.

England probably has the better 2 all rounders in the game in Ecclestone and Sciver-Brunt. Do feel that their batting can be a bit flakey at times. Their best can beat anyone on their day.

If there spinning tracks India will be favourites.
Good point. I do feel like the gap between Australia and India has closed but I did say that at the last couple of major tournaments.

Going to be a fascinating World Cup from that perspective. If its anything like the mens World Cup here in 2021, one senses that batting 2nd will be an advantage especially with the dew factor.

And in the opening post I didnt get the chance to list Sri Lankas womens squad. This is the squad now that we are a week from the tournament:

Sri Lanka Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad

Chamari Athapaththu (captain), Anushka Sanjeewani, Harshitha Madhavi, Nilakshika de Silva, Inoka Ranaweera, Hasini Perera, Kavisha Dilhari, Sachini Nisansala, Vishmi Gunaratne, Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, Sugandika Kumari, Inoshi Priyadharshani, Shashini Gimhani, Ama Kanchana. Travelling reserve: Kaushini Nuthyangana

A pretty famous win for Scotland last night, albeit it being in a warm up. They beat the Pakistan women in an upset.

They dont get the opportunity to play too many of the traditional test playing nations. They have played only Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in their history.

Ticket prices seem relatively cheap.

"Tickets for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 are officially on sale, offering cricket fans the chance to witness the world’s top cricketers in action from 3 to 20 October. With 23 matches across two venues in Dubai and Sharjah, the event promises to be an unforgettable experience as 10 teams battle it out for the ultimate prize in T20 cricket.

Tickets have been priced with accessibility in mind, starting from just 5 AED, while premium seating options are available at 40 AED. For double-header match days, a single ticket grants access to both games."

I am wondering what the crowds will be like for this tournament. Im also questioning outside India matches, if we can get close to 10 to 15% capacity? Last years final in South Africa attracted a respectable 12,782 but tournament total was 69,914 which makes me think outside the Finals , crowds will be on the lower side.

It will be around a 6 to 7 day gap between the first WBBL game of the season and the end of the ICC T20 Womens World Cup. I know players have a heavy schedule but it would not surprise me if some players ended up a bit cooked come the start of the WBBL campaign.

Prediction time

Think there is a clear Top 2. Unfortunately, its a battle for 3-4-5 in this group. Im going to say Sri Lanka 3rd, Pakistan 4th, NZ 5th.

Bates wouldn't get a look-in, in a 2nd string India or Australian team. Too top heavy reliant on Kerr and Devine.
