Carlton

Arrivals: Orazio Fantasia (delisted free agency – Port Adelaide), Elijah Hollands (traded – Gold Coast)
Departures: Ed Curnow (retired), Paddy Dow (traded – St Kilda), Zac Fisher (traded – North Melbourne), Josh Honey (delisted), Lochie O’Brien (delisted), Sam Philp (delisted), Lachie Plowman (retired)
Contracted: 40 (including one category B rookie)
Draft picks: 22, 28, 70, 78, 96
The Blues will place ex-Power and Bombers recruit Fantasia on their main list, as well as promoting Matt Cottrell from the rookie list. They will use only their first two picks at the national draft, which will take them to the minimum of 36 players on the primary list.

When do Duffy & Monahan become contracted (only Dom listed as Cat B)?

And Cotters is the one being upped - then query on one of the Irish slotting in as the A replacement.

Well there you are.

If Ralph is correct though, it means we are saving a rookie spot for either the rookie draft or a SSP

I think Kemp is a long way off playing as a mid.

Right now, still needs to learn aspects to become a better 3rd tall defender, but don't think that comes naturally to him

I'd like to see him play as a 3rd tall forward next year
I think a change of position would mean a stint in the VFL learning that role which I am ok with. Chances he starts there are fairly high as it is. He's a rare type with his speed, size and height combination. Still developing as a defender as you said.

I would not be surprised if we have a few guys in the VFL learning new roles who have played a fair bit of AFL. WE have invested heavily in development coaches. Guys like Durdin and Binns learning onball play.

I think we will find we have issues still in the middle with too many slow one way runners. Cripps position is locked in concrete. I'm not comfortable with Kennedy and/or Hewett in there as well. It's too slow and too one way to influential on bad ball movement issues.

The question I would like to ask in regards to Kemp playing an onball role is whether he can become as good as Kennedy and Hewett are but without lacking speed and being able to two way run? Talent is probably not the question here, tank probably is. Perhaps the answer is a good preseason and some development away.

Come the end of the 2024 season we will be looking for that missing mid in our side who runs both ways and has the pace to do it. Be good to have a look at what we have first before breaking the bank on what we need.

Then if he only becomes ok at it or he's good at it but lacks tank, at least he then becomes a rotation or a break in case of emergency. A back who we can throw in the middle like Kouta to change the momentum of the game. His burst speed, size and carry is very appealing in all positions.

Good problem to have, how far can you push a player's talent?

Next Monday (13th)

Made a few updates to the sticky - primarily in the "Key Dates" section. Thanks Pommylovescarlton for links.

Relevant to us:
Mon 13-Nov: International Players inclusion on rookie list lodgment -> date Duffy & Monahan will become listed Carlton players.

As for Fantasia - he is still a Port listed player. I expect Port will delist him tomorrow - otherwise he has the option to nominate for the draft - in which case we have to hope no other club grabs him first. But assuming he gets delisted, we can then pick him up in one of the upcoming DFA periods (likely this Wednesday 1st Nov).

Tue 31-Oct: Out-of-contract listed AFL player draft nomination close (national or pre-season draft)
Wed 01-Nov 9am: Delisted Player Free Agency Period (1) commences
Wed 08-Nov 5pm: Delisted Player Free Agency Period (1) closes
Fri 10-Nov 9am: Delisted Player Free Agency Period (2) commences
Fri 10-Nov 5pm: Delisted Player Free Agency Period (2) closes

I've long believed he's a handy fwd, but this wouldn't be my priority with Kemp now. SOS has more defensive ability and fwd smarts than Kemp IMO. The priority for me in the fwd line is another Jack Martin. Crash and bash medium type that has good goal sense and speed and commands a tall defender.

Mitch Owens would be absolutely ideal, but that's not happening. Wouldn't be against stretching Matt Kennedy, could well be Elijah Hollands

Who knows!! Conflicting information published by the AFL on this topic. My best guess (based on conversation with Pommy) is that we're able to have 3 x Cat B's, but still have max 44 on the list.
Neither here nor there really, though no one currently has 3 Cat B’s by this but Monday, 13th pending.

Should have a serious go at Zurhaar next year as a FA as well. He is the exact type of player we need. If North draft Duursma to go with George, Ford, Curtis already being there and maybe Sheezel returning to half forward I reckon it’d be another case of them being happy to let him go for decent compensation.

I agree, Kemp does need time to learn that forward role and still has plenty to learn as a defender

Completely agree, another Jack Martin type would be perfect, perhaps Hollands could grow into that role
