I continue to be concerned about our lack of key position depth. Draft has done nothing to address that.
Yeah, we have that perception, but we are not on the inside. If we are happy with the application of all on the list and they are committed to the club we are covered for a while at least.

We have four rucks a 27yo, two 24yo’s and an (almost) 19yo. We have some questions, but on face value are covered.

Key/tall defenders - we finished the season somewhat trying a model playing four quality talls Weitering(26 next season ), McGovern (29j, Marchbank (26) and the young gun Kemp (22). Back up from Young (25) who played most of ‘22 as somewhat of a revelation, before falling from grace, reportedly wants to work to re-establish himself, then Sam Durdin (27) the rookie, read cheap fall back. Add Jack of all trades Silvagni (26) and Cat B rookie Akuei (21), and possibly Lemmey (19/20) who could absolutely be schooled as a swing man.

As supporters/ followers, we, myself included question the tenure of Young and Durdin, but if they are happy with us, and our coaches with them, we are covered for a few years. If Lemmey is looked at as dual purpose, even longer.

With the realistic exception of McGovern, it is feasible that all of that list could have four plus years of effective tenure.

Just as Weitering is a staple down back for five or more years, with some very decent back up, including two blokes he could fill in for his role if necessary, we have two Coleman medallist’s heading up the forward line in the same age bracket and locked in to long term contracts. Depending on which ruck model we offer TDK at 24 also can be an integral part of the forward line when not rucking, or feasibly hold down a key position if it becomes necessary. Lemmey is our developing key, who may not get a vacancy or a decent run at it in the next five years. JSOS remains a key or third tall option, Kemp could realistically be redeployed forward as well and McGovern apparently has voiced a “willingness” to return to the forward line.
We have genuine medium forwards who could play undersized key roles Martin, E.Hollands, Moir and even Kennedy.

It would be nice to have a rookie developing as a tall option, the ACL to Duffy (194cm) may have been a setback to possible developing options. We have a rookie pick tomorrow, but no talls are linked. We do have ex Magpie “youngster” McMahon going OK in our twos and reportedly draft hopeful and Vic Metro key defender Christian Mardini is lining up for our VFL.

Until such time as we part with some of our current talls, we don’t have a real need. With the Campo boys next year, it is unlikely we will draft a high profile tall next year, so many of us pressed the need to get ahead of the game this year for a developing KPD. Then we have the prospect of compromised drafts with the Tassie side coming in a couple of years.

It is hard to believe we have not looked at contingency plans or looked at potential future free agents/trades.

I am in the camp that wanted a tall, but realistically there was not much on offer in this draft, and little apparent for next year as yet.

From my wishlist heading into the off season

Dynamic small forward - Fantasia. Unexpected and probably a little older than my preference, but if he is over his injuries would improve our hurtfactor

Dynamic 3rd/medium sized forward - Moir. Fits the bill perfectly. E Hollands also another that can play the role as well as playing through the middle

A Zac Bailey type - Billy Wilson? Not convinced but at least the club targeted the traits needed. If he is going to train with the mids, hopefully he also rests forward

A KPD Draftee. Still waiting and seems unlikely this year

Its reminded me I don't know what clubs think when recruiting. I'm out of my league

Agree with most of that. I think we do need a few more young KPD on the list.
We could have delisted Durdin and replaced him with Schoenmakers or some other kid. I would have been in favour of that as I don't really rate Durdin. Completely immobile and also prone to panicking - just a list clogger at this point.

As I see it …

Midfielders … Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Hewett, Kennedy, Docherty, Carroll, Wilson
Wingers … Acres, O Hollands, Cottrell, Binns

Rucks … TDK, Pittonett, HO’K, Mirkov

Small forwards … Motlop, Owies, C Durdin, Cuningham, Fogarty, Fantasia
Medium forwards … Martin, E Hollands, Moir
Tall-ish forwards … McKay, Curnow, JSOS, Lemmey

Tall-ish defenders …Weitering, S Durdin, Kemp, Marchbank, McGovern, Young, Akuie
Medium defenders … Newman, Cowan
Small defenders … Saad, Z Williams, Boyd, Cincotta

Don't think we need a few, but 1 would have been nice

I wouldn't replace Durdin just yet, nor would I do it with Schoenmaker on or off the field

Might go that way with the rookie draft today scratching my head as to whom.
Have you got any names?

I think we'll go Carroll if we see Wilson more as a mid. Kye Declase would be an interesting pick but more a tall utility than a KPD. Also like de la rue but not sure he has enough tricks or would find a spot on our senior list after 12 months
Sam Clohesy or Ethan Phillips from the VFL?

Anyone been delisted that may surprise ala Oscar McDonald?

I agree, if the club sees Wilson as a mid, then Carroll is a contender if he is still on the board.

While I like Patton and Sanchez, they arent really a need

An extra KPD draftee would have been nice, but don't think we lack depth

S Durdin
Young
O'Keeffe
Lemmey
My problem is O'Keeffe is a ruck, and Lemmey is a long term prospect. I think Durdin and Young are break glass in case of emergency.

Apart from Lemmey we aren't really developing anyone. We played most of last season with Crocker a resting ruck and a bunch of smalls up forward in the VFL.

I was hoping we would draft 1 more tall, mostly a defender, but we have next years off season to address it

Forward, if you have injuries to talls, you can still manufacture a dangerous setup, only have to look at the Pies as evidence

I'm hopeful that we have pick 18 next year with Ben Campo rated around pick 10. We use our F1 to upgrade our pick 18 ahead of the bid for BC and take the best KPD available.

None of those players are any good. Currently "D" graders. They are list cloggers at current output. We are banking on development of Okeefe, Lemmey and Young. However list cloggers are not depth. Hopefully there is a Jones or Rowe in that group

Going back to Elijah Hollands and his 1 year contract, does anyone find it slightly questionable that we reduced the length of his contract based on his court case?

Obviously he has talent, pontential and we wanted to bring him over, but to reduce the contract length possibly seems unnecessary?

I remember not to long ago people were adamant we needed 15 list changes just to make finals.

No club has AA or A graders as backup or developing players

He had 1yr to go at Goldie. Think he knows he mucked up and we’re happy to see how he fares in knuckling down and (hopefully) playing AFL footy. Over to EH to show up now and excel.
