Wrong way to look at it. Take Frampton.

Dictionary. 'Frampton'. A tall human being devoid of any AFL talent. Collingwood Grand Final medalist winner.

Each club has to carry non-elite players who are contributors. Owies is a contributor like fogarty but is non-elite. Having said that, fog was elite vs the Lions.

It's actually important to have someone like Owies. they galvanise the group, keep everyone level headed and never get carried away with themselves. Always chase, always try. Owies is no worse than Castagna for the Tiges. Maybe not quite as good as Castagna but in the same conversation.
Frampton is a tall stopper Defender who played fwd. Bortolotto was our equivalent when southby was injured in 81/82. Frampton did not need polish to fulfil his role but with small fwds it is a must. Voss is squeezing the juice out of some c and d graders fwd of centre. I am not convinced that cuts the mustard in the last 2 weeks of the year.

They may not be viewed as A grade players but, their output is A grade for the role they are playing within the team.
It worked for Richmond why not us?

Docherty and JSOS might both be replaceable (adding Jack as the same has been said about him) but they are also two players we’ve just lost from our depth chart. We will cop injuries throughout the year and no Docherty or JSOS to call on.

Yeah that's more the issue. Both are replaceable from the best 22 but if we cop injuries (like we have to Martin and Walsh), it could be a big step down to the next option.

Luckily Carroll looked OK otherwise I'd be starting to get very nervous about our midfield depth. Jury is still out though.

Bolton, Rioli, Castagna, Butler, Baker, Lambert, Edwards, Caddy. (Obviously over a few years of their dynasty)

Fogarty, Cunningham, Motlop, Durdin, Owies, Martin, Fantasia

There's a big difference between them in terms of speed, goal sense and pressure imo.

Right now I have Fogarty as the biggest lock amongst our forward line after Harry and Charlie. Still our weakest area on the field.

For the sake of the argument. If you added Geelongs, Brisbanes, Collingwoods, St Kildas, GWS's forwards to our list would you be expecting us to be flag favorites?

Miers McKay Close
Stengle Curnow Rohan

Bailey McKay Rayner
McCarthy Curnow Cameron

Hill McKay McCreery
Elliot Curnow Schultz

Owens McKay Butler
Higgins Curnow Membrey

Daniels McKay Bedford
Greene Curnow Riccardi

I certainly would.

Forward options outside of the two big boys is still concerning, Motlop a wait and see given the wraps on him this pre season.

I think we are the flag favourites regardless to be honest. Our backline when weiters gets back is invincible and our midfield is amazing

Said for a bit now but think next years our year. Reckon we'll come short this season and go get another role player or two to fill out last spots and blitz the competition.

So with Doc done for the year, who do we target in the MSRD?
Are mid season contracts for 6 months or 18 months? If 18 months, how will this affect us for list spots? Still a way between now and then, but if we're travelling then similar to where we're at, I can see us skipping MSD... time will tell.

I think the players can nominate. Most put 6 months to increase their chances of being taken.

I would be shocked if we skipped if we are travelling similar then to now. It's a free hit and we have about 8 on the injury list plus 2 gone for the season. Even if it's just to boost our VFL team.

As much as I agree don't know whether it's blind faith with me but, injuries play a big part the Tigers were durable creating synergy.
Continuity could see a couple more do what Fogarty has achieved in the last 12 months, too early to call for me.

Pressure is a mindset. I don’t see why our smalls can’t be as good as Richmond’s were at chasing and tackling. And of those names only Bolton stands out as consistently prolific goal kicker. Butler and Caddy did it for a season.

There are some weeks where Harry has been our best pressure forward. Other weeks where he didn’t give a shit. A big part of improving will be bringing that intent week in week out and I don’t think we are that far off. Fog has been at that level for a long time which is probably why he kept his spot on the list.

Rioli, Bolton, Butler, Castagna, Edwards had absolutely elite speed and agility. That makes a huge difference when pressuring players.

Our half forward line is very obviously our worst line. I know it's natural to defend our own but reality is they are well below the other top 8 teams in terms of talent.

I would strongly disagree there. Assuming that we consider one of Charlie/Harry as our CHF then our half forward line is;

Jack Martin - Harry McKay - Elijah Hollands/David Cuningham with Matty Cottrell as the 7th.

Can't see how that is below many oppo teams at all.

EDIT - To be fair you probably need to look at the 7 forward in totality because the old static lines of 3 don't really exist anymore.

I think we have plenty of talent up forward. Some of them are still developing, others lacking continuity, which is why I think the list management team have effectively just thrown numbers at the position.

3-4 of Fantasia, Martin, Motlop, Owies, Fog, Durdin, Cuningham + Moir will play every week alongside two of the best key forwards in the game. If we can’t find enough goals in that group something is wrong.
