Martin's longer than expected stint on the sidelines creates an opportunity for Kemp, he was threatening in the brief time they exposed him last VFL match.
One door closes, another opens up, perfect timing to try something different.
Kennedy hasn't looked like a dangerous forward either this year, it's not his strength.

I can't see Kennedy being dropped for Kemp, based on less than a half of footy playing forward in the VFL

Voss loves Kennedy, and he's a very competitive inside mid.
But trying to turn him into a DeGoey/Petracca type forward won't work, at least giving games to Kemp playing the JSOS role might end up unearthing a Martin replacement.(might also convince him that he has a future at Carlton beyond an undersized KPD.)

Doesn't need to emulate those players to hold his position ahead of Kemp

Kennedy was the 11th ranked player on the ground last week, so I doubt he is dropped this week

He has plenty of time to hone his skill at VFL level, we are not in rebuild mode, we are in win mode

Kemp most likely comes in this week for Marchbank

Surely there has to be another club sniffing around Carroll come years end, we might have to resign ourselves to losing some players.

I would not mind losing maybe a Kennedy/Carroll/Cunningham..... You would hope over time that the Campo twins will replace them on the roster or at least be their equal on the field.
Wouldn't want to lose Carroll. He's our only quality young midfielder these days.

WC have asked the question in the past, I think he'll cement a place this year though and stay.

I do think a developing Kemp is a far better marking forward than TDK, and introducing Pitto buggers up our forward line a bit.
And Kennedy does have that 3rd tall forward role in Martins absence.(although he's not suited to the job)
IMO outside of a couple of games in juniors, Kemp has shown very little forward of centre. TDK whilst inconsistent has at least shown some capability there (then again, perhaps I'm leaning on the semi-final too heavily).

It’s not just 3 years in to a season though, he’s in his 9th season of AFL football, there is a large body of data to make any call off.
He played all through our winning run to our best result in over 2 decades, without a preseason. He clearly ran out of puff by the end, which was why he was dropped for the prelim (and you could certainly argue that we missed him in that game).
And then starts this year in the team, before a minor injury.

I figure he’s fighting against the likes of Fogarty and Owies for another contract.
It is WAY too early to be making that call.

Are the supporters who consistently put Kennedy on the chopping, watching the same game as I am? Do they understand his playing as a true utility?

He should and will be replaced over time. I think the likes of Hollands, Wilson, Carroll... Those kind of players will hopefully replace the need for Kennedy. Kennedy at the moment is a big body midfielder that can pinch hit forward.
I think he is replaceable if we struggle for cap space or list space moving forward.

Put it this way, if Mccluggage said he wants to come back to VIC and was keen on the Blues but we didn't have the cap space, I think Kennedy would be the first to go, mainly because Hewett is a more capable defensive partner for Cripps etc.

Personally I'd rather keep Kennedy though. Imo we just need to upgrade our half/small fwds and we'll be the best team in it.

I find McLuggage classy buy lacks that bit of extra pace that would make a difference to our midfield.

As opposed to a Bailey Smith type who is a bit more different to our existing mids.

My gut feel on our immediate recruiting future is we're going to stick to the draft and maybe some cheap mature agers or low profile cheaper trades like Elijah.

Our cap is still bursting obviously.

We could end up in a bit of trouble if we don't keep a strong supply of draftees coming through.

Hawthorn traded out 2 years worth of picks for O'Meara/ Mitchell. Rich same for Hopper/Taranto. WC same for Tim Kelly.

It haunts them all to this day.

I'm so happy with our recruiters of late. More than happy to just stick to the draft as much as possible. I just wish we'd prioritised key defence a bit more. We could do with 2 more key defensive prospects coming through rather than just Lemmey.

I just had a look back. Gee the Hawks could do with Todd Marshall, Naughton, Simpkin, Sam Taylor, etc.

The pillars of their rebuild all wearing other club colours. If only Clarko hadn't overruled their list management team.

So sad.

With Martin gone for another 6 weeks, now is a great time to view Kemps forward marking threat ability.
If Young was adequate in defence combined with Weiters, then that'd be an extra bonus.

Martin isn't needing to be replaced, as he wasn't in the side yet.

More likely that Kemp simply resumes his duties down back, which he was filling prior to Marchbank's return.

Don't think the coaches will want to mess around too much with an undefeated formula. There may come a time for experimentation, but doubt this is it.

Now, that being said, if the game is looking set by the final quarter I'd love to see them swing Kemp forward then and get a look at him that way.

What happened in that regard, I haven't been following.

I'm assuming it's in relation to Hawthorn investing heavily in Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O'Meara, and to a lesser extent Jarman Impey?

2016:
Traded their 2017 first rounder, plus picks 23 and 36 in the 2016 draft for Pick 10.
Traded Pick 10 and their 2017 second rounder for O'Meara.
Traded Pick 14 for Mitchell.

Their 2017 first rounder ended up being Pick 7, Saints used it on Clark/Coffield but Hawks could have used it on Naughton who went next.

Picks 10 and 14 in 2016 could have nabbed them players like Florent, Simpkin or Marshall (or a couple of duds).

Their 2017 second rounder ended up being 26, which could have secured Brent Daniels, Sam Taylor or Tom De Koning.

Picks 23 and 36 (ended up being 25 and 39) in the 2016 draft could have landed them Fisher (who Clarko has now picked up) or Shai Bolton and one of Josh Battle, Brennan Cox or even (bit a stretch given he was groomed by the Cats) Tom Stewart.

Basically - at the time they needed to be hitting the draft and rejuvenating the list, they tried to load up one last time with a couple of workhorse midfielders and paid through the nose for it. They went out of finals in straight sets in 2018 and have been pretty much irrelevant since.

Mitchell and O'Meara
vs
Naughton, Marshall, De Koning, Bolton and Cox.

Two meat and potatoes mids vs an elite and versatile KPP, a KPF, an athletic ruck, an x-factor fwd/mid and a solid KPD. Could have been their version of our 2015 draft.

EDIT: In fairness to them, they were coming off a 3peat and then third place finish in 2016 (equal points with first and second). That being said, there's a cautionary tale here and with Richmond about not clinging too doggedly to the peak when you do get there.

Kennedy does well as a centre square mid, but struggles with the endurance required to do the defensive running (needs a lot of interchanges).

He is ok as a medium forward.

Kind of Mitch Wallis like
