Port are apparently fuming at us:

Port Adelaide is refusing to deal with Carlton over Dan Houston, with the Power angry at what they perceive to be Blues arrogance in early negotiations.

In talks between the clubs fed through Houston’s management, Carlton has stated it intends to keep its pick 11 for this year’s draft while trading a future first round selection to a third club.

So if its that easy"its North or you can remain at Alberton" why are Port furious at Carlton then?
Port would be saying screw you CFC and laugh in our face and say we'll just deal with North?
I think its pretty easy to read between the lines that Dan's preference is the Blues.
I'd say that Port would like a bidding war and that's not likely to happen if both clubs are offering the same.

Houston is likely to impact our ladder position significantly more than North's so I can see how, if offered F1's from both clubs, they'd want to push him toward North.

I think it’s a tough call for Houston, may come down to his preference for a Hyundai or a Mazda…:D

I get that and what you're saying but once again, why are Port furious at Carlton when they don't have to deal with us???

Firstly, that’s just a grab from SEN on the first morning of trade radio.
Port and Dan are reportedly on good terms.
If a deal satisfactory to Port were to be tabled by the club Dan is keen to get too, Port would probably accommodate him.
Port will require overs and Carlton will have to stump up if they are serious …

This is far and away the most intelligent oppo thread I’ve visited. No amateur Adrian Dodoro’s here.

Do you bite the bullet and go pick 11….maybe pinch a flag next year or two.

Amon made Hawthorn a lot better this year and Houston is a better player than him. Agree he’s not super high on your needs but crikey the guy can flush a footy. We all know scoring from back half is the new normal and he makes that happen more often than not.

Houston is on a contract negotiated before he became a dual AA.
Probably a major reason why he wants to return to Melbourne with a shiny new contract.
Port will be moving Soldo’s contract which probably wouldn’t be far removed from Houston’s existing “unders” contract.
Port will get overs as North are this morning reported to have their FF on the table.
Port holding a long term contract for Dan are well within their rights to tell him it’s North or you can remain at Alberton …
Port won’t get overs from North unless Houston agrees to go there…..

More likely he remains at Port.

I think the suggestion is that we trade our future first + something to GC for their current pick 12. So, we'd be offering pick 12 to Port for Houston.

NMFC will offer more $ you’d think..& there’s probably an underlying thought here is that the L/T contract he signed is now well in favour of PTA and an increase in pay is sought.

Sure North’s F1 would have something going back to them, not a straight swap F1 for DH.

Agree, but he has to agree to go there…. not sure he will!

Agreed.
Likely his manager would not allow a Carlton nomination unless they have an understanding that the Blues will accommodate Port’s trade demands.
North can offer Dan the new improved contract he’d be seeking and Port the trade capital they’d be satisfied with …

And yet.. Houston may not want to play for North. Can’t force a player to a team they don’t want to play for. There are provisions in place to stop that. Once he nominates a club he either gets to that club or stays at his exisiting club.

A lot to play out here but it sounds like he wants Carlton, North are being used by Port as leverage but aren’t genuinely in the picture, and this will go down to the wire because we simply don’t want to leave this years draft after having not invested heavily into the first round in recent years. Will all depend on how valid his reasons for leaving are behind the scenes and how badly Port need picks for Luko.

If Houston doesn’t want to play for North … he won’t.
That would leave his choices as :
Staying at Port
Or
Finding a club he likes that is willing to meet Port’s trade demands.
Apparently Twomey has reported that the AFL will approve Port using their future first which will pretty much take care of Luko.
Port absolutely hold the cards here as Silvagni did in the Gibbs negotiations.
Dan and his management would be well aware of this.
If the Blues are serious about Houston they will have to satisfy Port … it’s as simple as that …

Port are apparently fuming at us:

I'm not gonna take the media as gospel but I don't like the whole 'wringing every last point' out of picks and trades. Just hand over what we think he's worth or say sorry too expensive. All the posturing just builds bad reps at the trade table and we dont want to end up with a rep like Dodo.
