We don’t need to promote if we wish to select 3 at ND but we have the option to promote a rookie if we feel better inclined to roll with less ND picks (2), add a rookie, trial a SSP or save one over until the MSD (think those days should be over with, as unfort there’s usually a candidate for the Inactive List on most lists by round 11).
As it currently stands we have 1 too many rookies, so we have to elevate 1, and then 2 ND picks

This is such a strange decision for us. Shades of SOS era - punting on talent and forgetting that the most important ability for a footballer is availability.

Since SOS left we have done a much better job of bunting singles and adding consistent, low risk players who add depth like Hewitt, Cincotta, etc.

This feels like a coach's pick to me. Voss was at Port in 2021 when Fantasia last actually played sime decent footy Vossy probably hasn't seen nearly as much of the past two years since he joining us.

Still, i guess with Martin, Cuningham and McGovern showing a bit more stability this year it isn't a terrible move, particularly if it replaces pick 70 in what is roundly conisdered and 35-40 player draft. If he actually plays he is a perfect fit so if we even get a 5 game cameo before his hamstrings snap that might help us deal with a likely tough fixture to start the year

Played 4 games in two years because of Quad issues. Was actually fit and ready to play late last season.

If he does sign with us he will be ready to go from Day One. I am sure Russell will build him up to limit more injuries

Posted elsewhere that he played 8 SANFL games last season, Incl 4 goals in a final.

However there’s plenty of stories of players where their bodies can’t cope with the intensity of AFL from the step up from state leagues.

Interesting on a search yesterday on Orazio Fantasia Carlton and a story pops up with Orazio doing his hamstring in 2017 vs us, out for 3 weeks.

Had a chance to sheep on it………..

All I’m hearing is ‘IF’ or ‘COULD BE’ or ………..

Nup, still Yuk. I’m now at NFI WHY?
Why not?

Can anyone give a summary of Fantasia's last 2 seasons at Port? How much of his time was out due to injury and did he spend much time in the 2s, was he just not performing to get a spot back in the 1s?
He played 9 SANFL and 3 AFL games this year. Last year was 8 SANFL and 1 AFL.

So roughly available 40-50% of the time

If reports are right Port & GWS offered him one year deals for next year.

Two years isn’t a big deal. It depends on the money. He may have triggers for a second year? It may be a base but bonuses?

I trust what Austin is doing. Been good so far
That’s right
For all we know it might be 1 year plus a certain trigger for a second 👍

I’m running with Pom & the commentary on Duffy & Monahan both being rookied as Cat B’s.

Main: 32 + 1 (Fantasia) = 33 of 36
A: 6 (37, 38, 39, 40, 45, 46)
B: 3 (Akuei, 2 x Irish)

Think we just need to back the list management staff.

Stuart Dew at the Hawks might have only been remembered for THAT 3rd quarter in the Grand Final but their fans wouldn't trade it for the world. If Fanta can be available enough to create healthy competition and have some impact, especially when it matters most, it'll be a successful move.

I was calculating for rookie upgrades over the next couple of years to meet list requirements next year. Looking like the single year contract forward types in Fogarty and Cuningham are up against it, along with OOC next year Owies and Durdin.

I think we agreed when it was announced that Fog had earned a one year contract due to his backend proving he was depth in a mid/fwd role but beyond that he was likely to be one of the easier delist targets on the list.

There had been some discussion about DC wanting and getting a 2 year contract. Club wisely - in my opinion - gave him the one due to a combination of the injury history and that he simply disappeared too often in games this year. If he steps it up should find himself awarded that additional year next year.

Big year for Durds. Need him healthy ASAP so he doesn't fall down the pecking order too far. Another year like this year and his career could hang by a precipice. I really like him but stalled development is a career killer.

I'm most interested with Owies. See him as a long term foot soldier type but not sure if he's th Ed type you go into a GF with which seems to l mirror the selectors consensus given his droppinf from the prelim. Will be eager to see where he sits in the pecking order should everyone be healthy at some point. Wouldn't surprise me if he was highly rated nor would it shock if he wasn't a best 23 consideration.

Then you factor in others like Cotts and the two incumbents.

Personally, I would like to see us add a Jamie Elliott type prospect - a pure goal scoring forward prospect - as I think we may soon have that mid/fwd rotation stacked but still lack that type you believe in to truly be capable of giving you 3+ goals any game they play.

Yeah. The reality is you need to take some risks to win a flag. Considering we have the worst small forwards amongst the top 8, giving Fantasia 2 years on minimum wage isn't that big a risk. The chances of him coming good are alot higher then the chances of Motlop, Owies, Durdin all becoming the small forwards we need them to be next season.

Hope Philpy still gets to train with us &/or VFL team for assessment towards the MSD.

We’re certainly keeping things close to our chest these days. Not sure anyone/many had an inkling on Fantasia..
He was told he was rated but list spots were tight. Then it obviously comes down to how many picks we use and whether there is an available spot. If there is, I would be surprised if he doesn't train over summer.

Reliable sources suggest it's a 2 year base deal with incentives (games, goals scored, awards) with an opportunity to step into coaching when it's all said and done

From a money perspective it's a free hit on a player who at his best is proven to worth much more more than base. If it works out it's a bargain. If it doesn't then it might just be a contract we eat in 2025.

Worst case scenario if fit enough for VFL is we have a base paid player in our VFL team working with the kids and teaching them the types of tricks and tools that 90% of the players in the league can't teach

I think this would have been a consideration when doing the offer.

This is going to entertaining to watch, IMO it’s going to interesting to see what Fantasia needs to produce to get/keep a spot.
Competition is going to be fierce & I’d be a little concerned if I was one of our existing small forwards.

This very much feels like a “Voss” pick selection to me, good luck getting a game when he has a favorite competing for the spot.
There was a lot of talk about “selection integrity” thru the last season, this should be a doozy to watch play out.

IMO Fantasia at his best is an upgrade, you would think that with a good preseason & further development that Mots has the other spot (for now)

Given they are all very similar size & style it’s going to be a battle & a half for the spots.

Hope we are very hard but fair, good form in the 1s or 2s gets u the gig over anyone under performing but that’s a 2 week minimum block.

Need to find better best 22 forwards in terms of hitting the scoreboard if we want to take the next step imo.
100% agree.
Does Fantasia do it for you?

I really havent seen him play since he left the Bombers, then again at 4 games in the last 2 years through injury, probably fair to say not many have.

I do hope his body is OK because we cant afford to have yet another small or medium forward under performing.
If you take Charlie out, our forward line isnt getting it done TBH.

Walsh binnsy Cerra and Williams all back into training already

Gives off the vibes of pies off-season last year

Exciting stuff
I have very high hopes for Williams.
Hoping he plays as the mid forward we desperately need. Has the footskills and if Cuningham drops off again he has the ability to deliver.
