The seven years is what raised my eyebrows not necessarily the money which I still think is high for what his output is which I guess needs to be tempered by what other clubs would have offered him to get him out of the Lions.

This is a fair comment - but worth remembering the salary cap is 20% higher under this collective bargaining agreement.

More players are going to get over a million, hugh coming in just below that is about right imo.

7 years is a long time but he’s a good player.

I’m surprised they didn’t use their 4th pick for either Hately or Casey Voss. Both more than good insurance.
We went for upside lottery picks rather than a "safe" insurance option that's been delisted/missed out a number of times already. Probably the smart play, historically.

Was Ryan signed for 2 or 3 years; doesn’t seem conclusive. Hoping it wasn’t 3.

FWIW there were differing accounts. The club did say three years in their publication (https://www.lions.com.au/news/1454081/who-is-brandon-ryan) but at the draft night and in other media reports at the time it was said to be two. Given our history of games played triggers (Dev, Doedee) I do wonder if it's two with an option for a third, but I have no evidence beyond the discrepancies in reporting.

I think we really lucked out last night

Got arguably the most talented kid with our first pick and pinched a mature age recruit we were obviously keen on just before the crows

Bit surprised we didn't take a tall but maybe we were hoping Gray would last a bit longer

El-Hawli would've been a good option as well

Early days but they look good.

Let's see.

The guys haven't kicked a footy ball yet and the grass is greener on the other side is well and truly in play. Sheesh.

Sounds like Hugh was offered 1.2-1.3m from some Vic clubs. I wonder if that was on a 6 year deal and we are adding a 7th year to flatten the average.

Yep, it was also stated that Hugh would be pocketing "approaching" 1 Million per season, with the new salary cap that is a good deal for the club... if the 7 years is in fact correct that is a tad problematic IMO, would have preferred 5 years with some triggers for an extension.

I'd say his other offers dictated what we could do.

So the final year of his deal would be 2031. I doubt we are in a window for another 7 years, so the last 3 or so years of the deal could be a bit meh for our cap if we are rejuvenating the list.

Potentially, but also the cap will likely keep going up over that time...

Yes that too. When I say meh, I mean not worried about.

My post has nothing to do with the players; it’s about our numbers of our list and how many will have to depart (not necessarily of those drafted tonight) come seasons end; hence my comment that I suspect the club knows some contracted players will likely leave. How does my post elicit your response when all I’m doing is asking a logical question.

Again; just to spell it out clearly for you a it has nothing to do with the players selected and if you’re in any doubt about that, you’ll see I raised this a couple of times in this very thread pre this MSD.
The original post was a bit negative, but poster raises a valid point about list spots. These picks replace players on LTIL is that right? There may be 4 or 5 fathersons/academy picks of quality in the end of season draft. I am not across all the draft rules, but you can only take the number of picks equal to list spots to the draft? I probably am not as worried as McIvor about the club factoring all this in, but I think it’s a legitimate point for discussion.

There may be more potential list changes than we (me at least) are aware of.

Hopefully Clug hasn't been watching Fages press conferences

Beecken would be suited to the wing or running half back. The latter his usual position. A ball carrier and attacking goal kicking half back at SANFL level. Has stepped his game up another level the last 12 months and looks a leader out on the field with the Eagles. At his best when he takes the game on. Should be ready straight away and do well if he gets a chance.
Looks like a tough customer. What do you think? I wonder if the recruiters think overall our list is just a little to “nice.”

Was thinking the same.
Talk is that we have retained him for a bit under a mil per season.
So 7 years for 6.5mil is a pretty good deal imo.

He'll fly the flag - but more impressive was his willingness to run, take a risk and generate some ball movement, especially when the team was down last season. He started his career well and played in the premiership in 2021. Had a down season in 2022 as the team missed finals and was dropped to reserves several times. The penny dropped last season and his confidence and leadership flourished and this season, with the team going well and the oval surface nice and quick, he's been a standout. He'll need to take that confidence and risk taking to the next level and that will be the key for himself and the coaching staff at the Lions to get the best out of him. Easier said than done.
