I honestly do reckon our club is still a joke yes, and it kills me. Off field we run gimmicks to suck the supporters in and get pumped up, rather than letting the on field stuff do the speaking. And when you have opposition coming out after a win, and Iā€™m paraphrasing ā€˜we know they donā€™t work hard in the 4thā€™ what does that say about opposition sides respecting us. You have to demand respect in this league, and we havenā€™t and still play off being successful when blokes were punching darts and were plumbers on the side
Lmao we are statistically one of the best finishing teams in the league. We've had plenty of games this season where we've overran teams in the 2nd half, or in the 4th quarter... Josh Weddle saying otherwise doesn't mean bugger all.

And the off field gimmicks... Every single club in the league does the same stuff. It's how they earn money.

This is just a monumental melt. Nothing more.

The fall has been dramatic but we've been exposed at exactly how we all thought we could be. Teams stacking pacey half forwards and bringing all their numbers up around the ball and burning us on the way back.

The responsibility now lies on Austin to address that hole in our list this off season or risk wasting one of the best assortments of talents in the league.

List depth is a major issue.

I have posted it numerous times duing the season that I have been told that we have numerous players playing injured or sore. This has been casued by having no options to come in or we don't rate the options we have?

This year (and many have discussed it for 12 months) we have carried to many injury prone players and also to many players that aren't up to it

We give contracts (sometimes for 2-3 years)to players that aren't good enough. Simple

The other question is coaching? Are we coaching to what we have or do we think our old style contested ball is the answer?

IMO many bad list decisions along with our inability to adjust tactically has caused this fall

It's easy to get to finals, it's alot harder to go to a flag as sides work you out and put pressure on every aspect of your side. IMO we have folded under this pressure and badly

I believe it is because everyone is saying we have no Salary Cap space to buy them.
Tight salary cap was suggested on Footy Classified last night. Because it was a priority to improve our defence, Matthew Lloyd suggested trading one of our midfielders out ( no suggestion of who) to loosen up capital in our cap. Obviously Crippa & Walsh would be ruled out, but what about other mids. Would it be inane to consider either trading Kennedy, Hewett or even Cerra to accomplish enough capital to go after a competent mature kpd, ie, someone like Battle or Barass. There may by other players names pop up towards the end of the season who could fit the bill? IMO, our defence definitely needs to be addressed during the trade & free agency period.

Some of the melts in here are hilarious. The club played in a prelim last year and was sitting 2nd on the ladder until injuries and bad form hit.

To suggest we're still a laughing stock or the equivalent of the 7000+ day Bombers is looneyville type stuff. We'll be back next year and be taking it up to teams pushing deep for finals again. If we can sort out our high performance stuff and shuffle a few of the traffic cones on our list we'll be as good a shot as anyone.
I wanted to swap to West Coast when I was 6 in 2000 because I liked their players, their jumper and their song

My dad told me otherwise

And I'm glad he did!

I've witnessed some amazing moments and famous games over my 30 years. Yes we've not had success at the highest level but I've seen moments and games that I'll remember forever.

Stick fat boys, we're a proud and famous club and of course this season is a huge let down but just sit back and enjoy the ride as best you can.

It doesnā€™t mean bugger all, they would have reviewed it lol, thatā€™s what revision is about, you look for trends and try to exploit them, it isnā€™t a melt. You think one good season is acceptable I donā€™t, I want better.

You just think drafting Berry fixes everything, news to you, a first year draftee wonā€™t fix it lmaooooo

Club took a gamble on an array of injury prone list cloggers to finally get their bodies right and it didn't come off.

Pies took a gamble on going again and picking up Schultz last off season... It didn't come off... Are they a joke club because of that?
You win a premiership you can afford to gamble as lots of them do before they fall off a cliff. We needed to not take gambles but be intelligent with off-loading a few of those blokes and even just finding one reliable resilient player or 2 with reasonable skills elsewhere (trade, VFL, etc).

True but that form late last year has become more the exception than the rule. We were 2nd, so what happened? We have since won 1 of 6 games and only won 7 of 23 quarters since 1/4 time of GWS game

The fall has been dramatic and serious questions need to be asked
Although it's a 6 game stretch, it's really 2-3 different blocks of games, with varying reasons for the performances.

The worst of it was the Giants and Dogs games.
We absolutely stuffed up the planning, and selection of the teams. I think the MC, and then the players, got very ahead of themselves.
They should have known that these 2 games were absolutely vital to set up the rest of the season, and we should have won at least one of them, but really both.
These 2 weeks are what ruined our season.

Then we came into North banged up, had a really tough game, and won.
5 day break into Port (now 2nd on the ladder), very banged up and missing TDK, Acres and H. One of those 3 play we win. Well up at half time, we switch off a bit and can't maintain it.

Still banged up against the Pies. Dominate the first quarter and score 1.8
Lose Cerra and Cottrell.
Butcher multiple chances through the rest of the game, miss the chance to win after the siren.
Teetering against the Hawks, 3 injuries in the first quarter.

It has been an incredibly disappointing 6 weeks, to blow a season that is wide open and that we should be contending in. Player fitness and availability has played a major part.
But the one thing that has really linked the last 6 weeks is that the team has not seemed to be mentally switched on. Not sure if that is due to fatigue or what?

If Charlie's been carrying this injury since the beginning of the year. Why didn't we pick up McMahon in the mid season draft when we had a selection?
Whoever convinced Charlie to get jabbed every week needs to be sacked, walked to his desk and then escorted off the premises.

'we know they donā€™t work hard in the 4thā€™ that's so very Mitchell and Hawthorn, mind games at its finest. I'd love for that to be taped on the locker room walls for the remainder of the season because that's more inspirational than "we'll get to work" or "find the best version of ourselves".
The thing is, it's bullshit.
Over the previous 5 weeks we smashed the Giants and the Pies in the 4th, and were pretty even against the Dogs and North.
It was only against Port, on a 5 day break, banged up and missing 3 key marking targets that we had a poor 4th quarter.

Geelong took a gamble on Tyson Stengle after missing out on a flag for years and years on end. They took a gamble and it paid off massively which resulted in winning a flag the next year.

Every team takes gambles, some pay off, some don't.

And no, I don't think drafting a single kid is going to fix all our issues lmao... Don't be disingenuous. There's players in this draft that will address our list holes though, and with our cap situation and draft picks the way they are hitting the draft is looking like our only real option to get high end talent in without paying massive overs for them.

Some cheap FA's and budget trades will also be needed on top of some quality kids. I've been fairly consistent on that all year

We had two selections. We only picked one
Possibly because the club was hoping that Doc would make it back for finals. FFS... have they learnt nothing.

Imo the coaching element falls back on the list predicament. How can you adjust tactically when you're running out with cattle suited to play in the 1900's?

But the rest of this I absolutely agree with.

If the club is keen on Lukosious like someone said earlier than overlooking McMahon makes some more sense.

Personally I don't see his skill set translating well to AFL level, contested marking, one on one type player who's a complete string bean... Think he'd get out bodied too much at AFL level.

Luko at least has the elite kicking ability and aerobic base to play higher up the ground.
Nope... if Luko was any good, GC17 would be keeping him beyond the end of the year. And I've heard from people in QLD that he's not that well liked at the club.

yes in hindsight, probably. I can understand the reasoning for it but the gamble the club took didn't work out. I don't think anyone can deny that.

Keeping those bodies on the list has left too much to too few and thus we've died in the ass at the wrong end of the season.

I lot of reasons why we are where we are

Bottom line is we need List changes and significant ones. Too many injury prone players and too many not up to it.

Big off season for the club and for Austin & Lloyd. We could turn it around quickly or drift into oblivion for another decade.

I really feel that's where we sit

Amen. Most important off season for the club in a decade

I'm inclined to agree with you on our ability to bounce back next year.

However, I think it can be easily argued that the real identity of this iteration of Carlton is the one that has terrible runs of form rather than the one that made a prelim. There is plenty of data to support that the prelim was the exception rather than the rule. The reality is that both of those form lines are part of who we are right now. We need to get much better at sustaining our best footy.

As for being a joke, I think our reputation is still being built, but we're on our way for sure. Seems that the scars of the past run deep for a lot of people.

The problem hasn't been the fourth quarter all season long.

Even in our losing the fourth has been one of our strong points. The problem, mostly, has been our ineptitude over the middle two quarters. By the time the fourth quarter arrives, we've left ourselves far too much work to do.

If he was going to say something accurate it's that if you hit us hard and fast in the first half then you can put the game away early.

When the pace of the game has died down and opposition speedsters start tiring that's when we come to the forefront and we overpower teams.
