We need some pace and silky skills in the side with some arrogance. Player like Shai Bolton. I would delist/trade the following players:

Kennedy (we have too many similar slow midfielders and he has some trade currency)
Young (soft mindset and bad decision maker)
Pittonet (if anyone will take him)
C.Durdin (if anyone will take him)
Cuningham (injury prone)
Marchbank (injury prone)
S. Durdin (injury prone)
Martin (injury prone)

I want to see Boyd as a small forward. Has seen, mongrel and can kick over a jam tin
Liked this post.
Do you know how he went when he played in that small forward role at the dogs?
Played OK, but drafted to us off his showings behind the ball.
Didn't spend much time in the forward line, mainly played on ball
No, played forward and played back. Did not play on ball. Does not have the tank.

I like the idea of trying the players on our list in alternate roles before blowing up the list. No problem if we draft a highly rated kid like Berry to add zip and x-factor or even a budget type late or rookie if prevailing think has our greater needs elsewhere. Players like Boyd and even Binns are worth a try in small forward or high half forward roles. (Many forget that while “just role players” Fogarty and Cottrell are very decent high forwards when fit)

Cowan a generational mid sized defender developing, Saad and Newman entering sunset territory, but best 18 defenders. Ollie showed great potential as a playmaking rebounder and Cincotta while having credentials elsewhere is a very solid backman. Wilson likely to enter the mix early in ‘25 so a no brainer for mine to try Boyd forward. His kicking is a weapon and offers a POD.

You said “wheeling and dealing”.

What sort of imagination did you have in mind?
The words after wheeling and dealing were, i think Austin lacks imagination in this area.

Last draft, we were involved in 3 trades in total, that’s in the trade period and on draft night. We also signed 1 DFA

in 2022 we made a total of 3 trades, one of which was a draft night trade.

This to me reads like someone who lacks imagination, doesnt deal much and doesnt take much risk, it could be just my bias seeing what i want to see

There are some names that we need to look at shopping around...

Williams, Gov, one of Kennedy or Hewett, Cerra

To those hoping to get a 2nd rounder for Owies, that will likely be consumed by the B.Campo bid anyway so we'll be basically losing him for next to nothing.

Reality is, our list has been poorly managed... it's going to be tough to make the changes we need...

I genuinely think we should move both, and Williams if we can.

The plan would likely be to package it with our 2nd to get well in front of a bid.

However, if we were to hold 2 seconds and a bid came before both, likely only 1 would be wiped for Ben, and we’d get another pick in the 2nd round.
Alternatively, if we got to use our first 2nd before a bid, we could trade the 2nd out for late points and a F2.

That would be cutting our midfield depth very fine.

Depends what we get for them...

And nobody will take Williams unless we cover a big chunk of his salary. May as well keep him.

Makes sense... but there are two problems with Williams:

1 - He is another who is perennially injured
2 - We don't know what to do with him... we brought him in to play as a mid - didn't work. Play him at hb - he can't defend for shit. Play him forward... worked for a bit... but he hasn't impacted the sb much in his last 4 games so who knows how he'll go next year? Then we put him back in the back line in the ef...

Williams is untradeable. Think Jack Bowes or Brody Grundy. We’d have to either pay a portion of his salary or tie a draft around his neck to make him look attractive to another club. Unless he can salvage something by turning himself into a 30 goal small forward I fear his deal is on track to go down as the biggest disaster in this list rebuild.

I’d like to shake a few out of Gold Coast, because of their list number reduction.

Trading Motlop would go down as one of the biggest mistakes in Carlton's illustrious history.

The kid hasn't turned 21 yet, was injured most of this year.

Last season, which was his second in the AFL, he had 10 games out of 21 with 2+ goals, was number 1 for our tackles inside 50, kick our 4th most goals and is almost our only small forward with genuine x-factor and goal sense.

Lets try not to judge a kid who spent most of the year in injury rehabilitation on a couple of underwhelming games.

His upside is massive and he has so much of what we need.

No excuse for turning up in the condition he did. Regardless of injuries. You're a professional athlete on great money.
