Just read the Jack Martin article:

Martin, 29, joined the Blues ahead of the 2020 season on a lucrative five-year deal but only managed 54 games in that time, including just three games this year.

If we pick him up we have rocks in our head.
The thing is Carlton are so awful at handing soft tissue concerns that it's hard to tell how much of this is attributable to Carlton being stupid and how much to Jack Martin being cooked. I assume there's ways to ascertain how cooked long-term a player's soft tissues are, which was probably the purpose of the medical in the first place.

The bigger concern is even if it does work out, he kinda gives stuff we already have while being weak in areas we need more of (a problem that go_the_dockers in particular accurately stresses on). He's very good overhead and quite silky. We've got enough guys who can take a mark, though the skills obviously help. We need crumbing and pressure, and Jack Martin doesn't help those areas.

If we're lining up next season with the 3 talls and Darcy (Jackson more midfield time hopefully), Sturt, Freddy and Martin with Bolton rotating fwd a fair amount, it's an offensively potent group. But once teams withstand the initial entry, they'll be waltzing it out. Granted, Sturt has improved in those areas, so next season hopefully improved competition means we can demand Freddy improves in those areas too.

Will cost stuff all salary wise.
List spot? Mate there’s always 10 on a list that won’t amount to much.
He’s a free hit.
Can everyone stop worrying about a spot on our list or think we’ll pay him big dollars.
At his best he’ll improve our front half. If he’s injured all year then boo hoo.

There’s guys like Delean and Simpson who combine for 8 touches in WAFL games.

Martin is the definition of a free roll gamble.
This guy isn’t going to be coming on rookie wages. It’ll be multi year $400k minimum. Guy is a mercenary. Just look at how he got to Carlton.

Won’t be $400. Might be 2 years.

I’d hope it’s 1 with a trigger for a 2nd and is heavily games played based.

Give him $150k and $7.5k per game.

Or a sliding scale with greater payments for more matches played.

No way we just give him $350k to sit on sidelines. We’re stupid but not stoopid.

Not sure it'll be that straight forward, reckon we are looking at 300k then heavily incentivised on games, in which case he will be worth it when he plays games

Or we get him fit and gain a gun on chips

Then we look like geniuses

This is the equivalent of buying a cheap and rusty 20 year old Maserati, with the thought that you can fully restore it to showroom condition as a side project...

What's been Martin's most serious injury? Is his lack of durability over a season caused by some major past injury that is recurring or is it a constant series of various short term injuries?

300?? ….200 would be a joke!

And that’s just it people carrying on it’s a free it .
There’s no such thing in this case .

if nod leaves because he doesn’t accept freos offer due to them offering him peanuts because they want to bring Jack Martin in then in no way shape or form is Martin a free hit then

Or .. we have to hand over more draft capital to get Boltens salary down instead of using Martin’s money and just taking an extra draft pick (who will actually be on minimal wages) then again it’s not a free hit

Finally what about if (extremely likely) Martin ends up in rehab using up finite resources that could be better directed to others or simply being in rehab majority of the year all together?. basically his entire wage becomes a debt , that could’ve been better spent elsewhere

This idea the blokes a free hit is absolute misnomer

Martin and Sonny will be some pretty good role models/uncles for the guys we are looking to get in (Kozzy and Bolten) and potentially some kids in the draft etc. An area we have been a bit short on lately. Having blokes like that in and around the club are vital going forwards
This is the one reason I don't mind Sonny staying on.

Don't enough about Martin to tell if he has any leadership qualities but we know Sonny has that in spades.

To be clear AVERAGE afl salary is $440k.
By 2027 ~ $520k. So Martin on 2 years at $400k is a below average salary. Those saying $200k is what a first year player gets…

So below average salary , for a DFA ie costs zero picks for two years. I’m in the get Martin camp. I’ll be his buddy next year too.
Zero risk here , 95% upside. Proven AFL talent,Worse case plays 10 games in 2 years 5% chance he blows his calves and retires/LTI. Assume this is exactly why we do a significant medical before trade, either way still has better skills than 95% of the 18yo fourth round picks.
