2024 McClelland Trophy

I was just as shitty about it last year when the demons won it. Then look what happened

Good luck this pre-season. Jack Ginnivan loses the plot. And Jai Newcombe wants to leave due to bad culture in about 9 months.

The million dollars would have been bloody nice, not gonna lie.

In its current iteration though, the "McClelland" title though is in danger of very quickly being seen as a consolation prize for teams that can't get it done when it counts.

What do you mean? Even when it was only awarded based on the men's results this was always the main criticism against it when the McClelland Trophy winner failed to also claim the finals premiership.

The McClelland is a joke. The Hawks fans on here think the main reason I’m annoyed is because the Lions didn’t win it. Of course not. Ive been a Lions supporter since 2004 who was at the grand final this year. I have been through the whole journey and couldn’t be more stoked.

I’m annoyed about this award because AFL is a professional league handing out a prize for the most stupid criteria in sporting history.

Yes and it’s still a criticism. And it’s wrong. And it’s stupid. And it’s time to change it.

Our AFL game values four things:
1. Winning the premiership (85%)
2. Making Prelims (10%)
3. Winning finals (4%)
4. Winning the minor premiership (1%)

Getting out in straight sets is frowned upon in our game and never something to be celebrated.

The award is a joke.

Hawks fans dying on the hill of who cares about the million dollars is bizarre. Of course lions fans want the club to win that and think we deserve it.

The club we lost to had two easy draws and choked the finals.

The factor that the award is factored in over 2 systems makes the old rules obsolete under the rules it was a fairer system people understood the rules of the trophy finish on top in the AFLM.

The current system makes no sense it should be rewarded to the best team which is why Finals should count

It's painfully obvious the only reason you're in here sooking it up is precisely because the Lions didn't win it when you think they should have.

Totally agree premierships and winning finals are held in higher esteem than home & away records. But you've pulled those percentages out of your arse. There's plenty of value placed on clubs performing well in the H&A - the consistency and endurance across 23 games rather than just being fortunate to hit some good form in September.

The majority of individual player honours are also decided purely based on the performances during the H&A. I don't see you mounting a case for the Brownlow, All-Australian, MVPs, etc. to include finals. I suspect it's because there isn't a million dollars on the line for your club.

I'd be happy to see it changed so there's a separate trophy for each of the men and women's comps. While the current setup is meant to recognise a combined club effort across two competitions I do think because half the prize money goes directly to the players that it should actually go to the best performed club in each comp.

Unfortunately for you, Brisbane still wouldn't win it. Even if you included finals. Sydney won 19 games to your 18 (and that was from one less final for the Swans) in the men's. And in the women's as long as North win their PF they'll have a better record than Brisbane too.

IT'S not about the Lions I think the system is flawed I don't think I once said the Lions should win it

Sure, but I just looked up the 2023 version of this thread and don't see you or any of these other Brisbane posters mounting these arguments against Melbourne having won it despite not winning the flag in either comp.

It's very obvious that you're all only chiming in this year to say it's a flawed system because whether you choose to admit it, you think your club should have won it.

And before you think you've got a gotcha to flip it on me... I didn't post in the 2023 thread either. Because I honestly don't give a shit about this trophy. I am proud of the Hawthorn AFL and AFLW teams seasons despite the disappointing finals exits. Premierships are all that matter to us. But I'm happy the current rules have fallen in our favour and my club and its players have made bank. I'm also happy to admit the system is flawed, as I have multiple times in this thread. Sydney and North Melbourne should feel hard done by as minor premiers. Brisbane should have performed better in the H&A if they wanted to make a claim.

There was similar commentary regarding this on our board last year too given we had the women's team win the flag and the men come runner up.

Like you said though, would much rather have Brisbane's results this year than Hawthorn's.

Brisbane fans were annoyed about it last year. I know this might be shocking, but its almost as if more people have cottoned onto how farcical it is after it happens two years running. You're reading your own press if you think its because of Hawthorn. Petty squabbles between teams is a VFL mindset.
