There has been a strong streak of Neale 2013 grand final revisionism that has been running through this board for years now.

  • Lachie was hardly a match winner when he was 20.
  • We were playing 4 other inside mids at that point (Fyfe, Bara, Mickey and Creepy.) and at that stage Neales accountability was just as bad as it is now and he was even less fit.

It was the correct decision to play the roll players in my view and only bring him in if and when the game needed chasing.

The big mistake Ross made was not throwing our free agency chips into a partner for Pav who was at least good enough to make their opponent think twice before zoning off. Peace's bombs into the 50 from the wing could surely have replicated by someone cheaper.

I still can't get over the fact that we're responsible for Brian Lake's career highlight.

Came to say basically this, Neale as the sub really wasn't that a big deal in the scheme of things.
It all came down to not taking our opportunities on the day and missing another decent target up front.

I feel like we had to try and chase the game, and we had our chances in the last quarter but weren't clinical enough.

Clarke in general just never reached the level we needed.
I'll tell you who would have been better than both mayne or zarke - keplar. Remember how in that 2012 final he kept Scarlett miles away from Pav and the great man ran riot on Lonergan as a result?
Naturally in the last quarter of the granny we're targetting Pav and all mayne had to do was keep lake away from him but the mop haired muppet had other ideas

Either of Bradley or Griff would have been an improvement on Zac Clark - both lost to knee injury wrapping their legs around an opponent. Thiiiiiiiiis close.

Amid the general swarm and apotheosis of Roly Ball, you forget that prelim had some insane moments of individual brilliance. If it was H&A, Sonny's mark (after Fyfe longbombed from the centre clearance) would have been a Moty contender and Balla's over the shoulder goal, as he's going to ground, a Goty contender.

FMD Fyfe was a freak.

Lachie Neale's 2013 season.

He had a purple patch in last 6 weeks of the regular season averaging 27 disposals and a goal per match.

He got 21 disposals in the Qualifying final in Geelong.

To say he wasn't making an impact was rubbish.

He should have been in the 21 on GF day unfortunately Ross saw otherwise.

Would he made a difference maybe not.

But he would made a better impact then Sutcliffe imo. That's the only blemish for me on what happened at the selection table

I don't think anyone was saying he wasn't contributing, just that at that stage he wasn't the "future" Neale yet.
I was a little surprised he didn't start but it was kind of choosing Brodie vs Erasmus level for today's team.

Sutcliffe was another disappointment for me, he showed some really good early signs and then just didn't follow the trajectory I thought he had, seemed to lose confidence.

Overall a big blast from the past, I think I might actually be ready to watch it again now.

Sutcliffe was playing because Ibbotson and Clancee Pearce were both injured in my opinion.

Barlow threading it from - 5 degree angle.

Meh, when zarke got subbed out mayne had the job in the last quarter and it was demonstrably worse
I listened to Lyon on MMM talk about that GF, and he believed that this was the sole reason for the loss.

It was well known that Lake was struggling with man on man contests at the time, and all these guys had to do was stand next to him and apply some pressure, removing his ability to mark.

Mayne tried to play off him instead and Lake tore us a new one

Man, I sometimes forget just how ******* crazy good Fyfe was. Just unbelievable the things he could do. If we can get even 70% peak-Fyfe back, we’ll still have a great player.
I think a lot of us forget, it's really a big shame he's been cruelled by injury so much.
Ablett Junior I think was even better in many respects, and he was also similarly cut down.
