I listened to Lyon on MMM talk about that GF, and he believed that this was the sole reason for the loss.

It was well known that Lake was struggling with man on man contests at the time, and all these guys had to do was stand next to him and apply some pressure, removing his ability to mark.

Mayne tried to play off him instead and Lake tore us a new one
Needed a Kepler Bradley tbh. If he was fit, would be the perfect choice.

That and Ibbotson at FB. Duffield was never the right man for Gunston.

Kept Roughead to 2 goals- 1 from a ‘high contact’.
Buddy to 0 goals* (got a mystery ghost 50m penalty… would love a please explain sometime for that one..)
Bruest to 1 goal.
Cyril Rioli to 1 goal- off a chicken wing free kick.

Only one was Gunston with 4. Defence did their job.

If he has goalkicking..
was a battering ram for far too long.
I think his goalkicking issues are overblown.

It hasn't been a strong part of his game overall, he's averaged a bit under a goal per game over his career, and the setshot yips were very visible, but it's not like he didn't have major impacts on games.

There has been a strong streak of Neale 2013 grand final revisionism that has been running through this board for years now.

  • Lachie was hardly a match winner when he was 20.
  • We were playing 4 other inside mids at that point (Fyfe, Bara, Mickey and Creepy.) and at that stage Neales accountability was just as bad as it is now and he was even less fit.

It was the correct decision to play the roll players in my view and only bring him in if and when the game needed chasing.

The big mistake Ross made was not throwing our free agency chips into a partner for Pav who was at least good enough to make their opponent think twice before zoning off. Peace's bombs into the 50 from the wing could surely have replicated by someone cheaper.

Should have had Mitch Clark from Brisbane, but we were being too smart, squabbling over which pick 16 or 20 to give to Brisbane. We delayed Melbourne swooped with pick 12 and we missed out.

Mitch Clark's career was cut short but I think he would have been the difference in the GF. What makes it worse we were squabbling over Sherridan or Crozier 🤮 neither of which played in the GF.

Didn't her retire out of depression? I think we dodged a bullet there.

Depression was the stated reason. He had a long history of injury prior to one good season at Brisbane as the roaming ruckman up the field and then indicated he was coming back to Fremantle - then Melbourne threw one of the biggest deals ever (at the time) at him and he couldn't turn it down.

Then, he again got injured and was now sitting on the sidelines getting paid a fortune (I think about $35,000 a game) to sit on the sidelines and it wore him down mentally.

Came to say basically this, Neale as the sub really wasn't that a big deal in the scheme of things.
It all came down to not taking our opportunities on the day and missing another decent target up front.
Yes, not taking our opportunities on the day. My heart sank when early in the match Sonny and Fyfe missed close shots they'd been nailing all year. One or two went out on the full.

Prior to game my pessimistic sense was our boys would be overawed by the occasion. To me that's how it played out - from memory as I've NEVER been able to re-watch to this date.

I think since the GF it's been noticed.

His set shots in 2013 was 12.1 before the GF.

Ever since that day he hasn't been the same set shot.

Same. Can't do it.

Maybe if we win like 10 flags from 10 GFs from here on I might go back and watch it to see what it was like to lose one. Otherwise, can't see me ever watching it.
I've only ever re-watched the 3rd quarter. Fun seeing us make a run and hearing the Freo chant go off.

I was there and the only thing I was really worried about was our accuracy . We were poor with that in the preliminary final (about the only negative that night) , of course the wind was swirling all over the $&*ing place. Missed shots on goal trigger me to this day.😖
And it pissed down with rain the night before and the morning of the game. The wind was quite strong and swirling around the ground, plus it was as slippery as a politician avoiding a direct question. Check out our first goal by Mzungu and you'll see his foot slide about 30cm as he kicks the ball. Conditions definitely favoured the side who plays the most at the MCG.

You guys are rookies, I've watched that GF like 10 times by now

We are Freo supporters, our life is pain
Wierd thing to share? "So you guys can't bare to voluntarily slam your private parts in door after it happened by accident that one time?! Ha weak I've done it 10 times."

It’s bordering on “we traded out Mathew Lloyd” type territory.

20 yr Lachie Neale was not even half the player peak freo Neale was let alone Brownlow Neale 🤦‍♂️
