There was still 4 passes and Freo/GC did not enter considering they had list spots available.

We'll see how good this group are.

Freo don't have too many out of contract at the end of the year so list spots will be tight. Same goes for GC, who may have to reduce their list size at years end.

NEW KANGAS SECURE FUTURE

NORTH Melbourne's pair of AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft selections have already been locked away for 2025, with the No.1 pick Geordie Payne and former Port Adelaide ruckman Brynn Teakle both nominating on longer-term deals.

Payne and Teakle were among nine of the 19 mid-season recruits to have nominated for Wednesday night's draft on 18-month contracts, with West Coast recruit Jack Hutchinson also headed to the Eagles with a deal for next year.

St Kilda midfielder Max Hall, Hawthorn forward Jasper Scaife, Brisbane's Will McLaughlin, Adelaide ruck Toby Murray, Collingwood youngster Iliro Smit and Port Adelaide defender Logan Evans also opted for 18-month contracts.

Payne had long been considered the likely No.1 pick and ultimately headed to the winless Kangaroos on Wednesday evening, while six-game AFL player Teakle was the only second-round pick to have nominated on longer terms.

Richmond defender Jacob Blight, Western Bulldogs forward Kelsey Rypstra, Carlton midfielder Cooper Lord, Melbourne forward Luker Kentfield, Essendon speedster Saad El-Hawli and Sydney youngster Tom Hanily all nominated on six-month deals.

Richmond's Campbell Gray, as well as Brisbane pair Luke Beecken and Darcy Craven, also opted to nominated on terms that would only see their future guaranteed until season's end.

There were a total of 13 players taken in last year's mid-season draft, with only three nominating for longer-term contracts. However, the other 10 all either had those deals extended beyond the season or were traded elsewhere. – Riley Beveridge

My only interest in these guys is to see if both of them get a debut before Bobby Hansen Jr who has had a 12 month head start.

Battle of the duds!! Gotta make our own excitement somehow
Hansen has already played.

It was so forgettable, you’d be forgiven for thinking it never happened.

To be fair, as I exclusively broke the story in Round 1 - Todd Viney shook CCJ's hand at training and congratulated him on earning his debut "big moment for you young fella".

And as reported it got really awkward when Viney walked away a bit pist muttering "you'd think he'd be more ****ing excited" after the muted response.

Very curious to see how El-Hawli goes, feel like that’s going to be a quality pick for Essendon.

I'm interested to see how Kentfield goes. I wouldn't have minded him as a rookie in last years draft and surprised Melbourne took him (seems to have come from nowhere).

One of the more bizarre selections. Has only played 4 WAFL games this year (two reseves and two seniors). In the seniors he is averaging 9.5 disposals, 1 mark, 7 hitouts and 0.5 goals per game. Doesn't exactly scream out 'PICK ME'

Essendon keep smashing the MSD.

Durham, D'ambrosio, Menzies and Hunter was even looking good on the track until the knee.
Did they not let d’Ambrosio go? Have I confused him with someone else?

Yes he left for Hawthorn but is a quality player regardless.
Thanks, just checked and Essendon got a decent player briefly and then swapped him for two draft picks so all round a good result for them as MSD picks go.

It’s an 18 month rookie contract.

It’s nothing.
This is where future assistance packages should focus on. I'm conceptually against first round priority picks (as well as father-son/academy). Assistance packages should be to allow extra rookie or general list spots, and perhaps not count that in the salary cap. Gives a team some flexibility to pick up players who may be on the fringe. No ones going to waste a list spot on a Zac Tuoey type player, but if he was essentially free for underperformed clubs, it may give some stability in injecting experience.

Also giving teams some extra salary cap space might be better than draft picks - an extra 300k might allow an underperforming team to get extra players in.

There's no point taking extra picks for longer than six months unless you think they'll be better than what we may get at the end of the year via player movement and drafts

We were probably going to get a mature body for ruck depth then if we didn't pick one up in the MSD. Teakle looks like a solid option for that. Definitely an upgrade on Free.

What's the point of having a larger salary cap if we already have space in our cap that is not being used?

Hot tip for aspiring MSD players next year: have your own website.

Good on him, surprising more don't do it,,,,,putting together video and highlights packages and sending them to scouts are the norm for kids trying to get US college sports scholarships.
