Even though it was ultimately a losing effort, this was possibly the most outstanding individual performance of the season so far in the talent league. Anderson willed his team back into the contest almost single handedly in the second half, dominating stoppage, laying bone crunching tackles and even chipping in with a couple of goals.

He is a beauty. Love how much defensive intensity he has. Bit rough around the edges with his disposal and decision making but you can’t teach his competitiveness.

Bit of Rory Sloane/Callan Ward about his game. Looking forward to see how he goes in the carnival now that he has made the Vic Metro Squad.

Hanson instead of Selwood is easily our biggest drafting mistake, it's right up there with the Tigers taking Tambling instead of Buddy.

It's also the answer to anyone who suggests that you should draft for positional needs over best available in the first round.
Yes, if you are going to do something like that then you trade down the draft order.

At a guess where will out 2nd rounder come in if we remain last, 25+?

Ashcroft, the GC academy pick, our two end of first rounders priority picks we traded. Possibly some compo picks.

Probably closer to 30. I’d imagine bids for the Camporeale twins will come in the first 25ish picks. Then you have Ashcroft, Welsh and Leo Lombard. Potentially Sam Marshall (Bris Academy)

Lachie wasn't a positional need pick.

Gibbs, Gumbleton and Hansen were absolutely the clear 3 heading into that draft.

There was massive hype around all 3 of them as generational young players, they just happened to be a mid, CHF and CHB, which added to it.

Easy to say in hindsight, but Selwood was never spoken about as a top 3 pick at the time with his knee.

It would have been a ludicrous suggestion, as Hansen was considered one of the best underage key back prospects of the AFL era at that point.
I recall that everyone was taliking of Gumbleton and Hansen as picks 2 and 3. Some discusion round who was better. Selwood wasn't mentioned in that top bracket.

He wasnt only because he was recovering from a knee reco from memory and had missed his top age campaign. He had been considered a pick 1 contender before that, even won U16 champs MVP possibly? (dredging memory banks, it was so long ago)

That's my recollection. Was considered right at the top with a ? due to the knee.

Its funny to look back on it now knowing that basically all of those big guys failed to fire, but at the time 2006 was considered a super draft. So that also contributed to it. In a normal draft year a star junior with a bung knee might still go pick 1, but in 2006 there were so many other kids considered to be "generational" prospects.

Joel Selwood was projected top 5 back in 2006 then the rumour that he had dodgy knees slide him to pick 7...Stephen Wells the best recruiting boss in the business IMO.

It wasnt a rumour. I just looked it up to confirm my memory of back then. He had four knee operations over his final two seasons of junior footy, and the final one ended his senior year after 6 rounds of the TAC cup, causing him to miss the champs.

O'Farrell confirmed his bona fides as a top tall defensive prospect in this game. Where other Academy defenders struggled with the amount of ball coming in and the more mature Coburg bodies, O'Farrell had the closing speed and aerial ability to compete at a high level. He also used the ball well by foot coming out of defense.

Cheers Noober...always thought it was the Cats that started the rumour to scare off suitors for Selwood!

you guys are correct with regard to the media coverage but i can assure you selwood was considered inside the club.

NORTH Melbourne's recruiting boss was desperate to select Joel Selwood in the 2006 draft, but his hands were tied. The Kangaroos' long-time scout, Neville Stibbard, was overruled by the club's medicos.

"Our medical staff said not to take him," Stibbard said yesterday.

Stibbard, who left Arden St last year, yesterday recalled his determination to take Selwood with the No. 3 pick. "I spent a lot of time with him. I went up to the family house and when I left, I was convinced he was an AFL player and an AFL captain," Stibbard said.

"He blew us away for a 17-year-old. He knew our gameplan. He knew how we played.

"There are kids at the draft camp who don't even know who your captain is."

"You've got to take notice of your medical staff," Stibbard said. "All medicos want to cover their backsides and tread on the side of caution."

Stibbard said Roos club doctor Con Mitropoulos became involved at the draft camp.

He said the medical staff had taken a strong interest in draft decisions after injury problems with past high picks.

Stibbard named David Trotter, the No.9 pick in 2003, as a reason for the caution.

"David was one that should have played, but he had an operation on his hamstring, which was very unusual for a kid at his age," Stibbard said.

Selwood's 2006 season had been ruined and there was innuendo about a "bone-on-bone" scenario in the knee joint.

The Kangaroos doctors also warned Stibbard to steer clear of Beau Muston, another knee victim, a year earlier before he ended up at Hawthorn.

Considering all this we just about need to push Zurhaar out and make sure it’s band 1.
We can’t be going to the draft with picks 1 and 29.
