This isn't any way cope but if we traded say pick 15-18 in for our ff and took him the outrage would be less? Sure we may have taken someone else in that pick range but how do we know? Mabie the club rated Matt highly and neally fell of the chairs that he was still available at the last pick tonight, we also got Tigers f2 which if we are being honest they will be paying a $1.05 to finish 18th next year. First pick of the second round are always valuable but but that pick will slide out, who cares if pick 19 becomes pick 29 its still the fist pick of the second night. The whole trade is a disaster if we finish bottom 4 and Matt doesn't make it, thats is the only tangible here.

yeah for me it comes back down to the player, because you are right in that situation I am just as outraged

i strongly believe there were better options available at the pick

for a twin comparison i see matt as like a ben mckay swingman vs jack as a harry mckay kpf

and likewise shanahan i see as a gun kpf

We just have to see if 12 months of development into Whitlock is worth what pick we finish at next year.

To try to positive spin what on the outside appears to just be on paper an historically bad trade currently…

We have bought in 3 Ex premiership players that immediately play and improve at the spot we have them.

We took arguably the best mid in the draft

Our spine is starting to set… Dawson Chom Whitlock Larkey. Very versatile tall and athletic.

There’s good reason to think we win more next year and the talent is already there on our list to be a premiership team. I would argue that we will need window dressing more then anything if Whitlock and Dawson come through

I hope we use the lack of an F1 as a mindset changer as to who we are and what we expect from ourselves: mid table in 2025.

Clearly the trade period reflects an instruction from the top that it is time to start winning. It's only so long that 'process-focus' stays credible. We have underperformed for years, symbolised by 'good-mate' LMac selected by what seems a frustrated but mysteriously complacent team. Meanwhile our ladies are furious at losing a GF, work their arses off and come back in exquisite shape to deliver one of the most dominant seasons ever.

This trade can be a symbol of what expectations are and the attitude and focus needed to meet them.

Just as everything was blossoming for Jack, he broke a finger playing for the academy side, sidelining him for six weeks. That injury impacted Matt, too, after he started the year strongly down back, including 11 intercept marks in his first three games.

With his brother and fellow goalkicker Josh Murphy injured, the Bushrangers swung Matt into attack with devastating effect.

Matt kicked bags of five goals twice in his first three matches after the move, and remained up forward for most of the season, while reverting to defence at the under-18 championships.

The switch was reminiscent of the King twins’ 2018 season, when Max’s ACL rupture saw Ben go forward from defence – and that became his position at AFL level.

“I always planned to swing forward in my draft year because, predominantly, I played down back as a bottom-ager. I had talks with Mark Brown, the Bushies coach, about swinging me forward post-champs,” Matt said.

“I wanted to be that key defender/centre half-back in the Country side, but with Jack and Josh going down with injury, I got swung forward a little bit earlier and played some good footy there.”

Matt has no preference on which position he plays, and prides himself on his versatility – which has impressed talent scouts enough that he is viewed as a potential top-20 selection. Jack returned from injury in time for the championships and finished the season strongly for the Bushrangers as well.

👏 👏 👏

nah we made the right move with FOS at 2

its the caleb daniel trade that ****ed us

we had the kpp to take at that pick and wouldnt need to touch our f1
Caleb Daniel was contracted to 2026 we had to pay a pick in the 20's MINIMUM to get anyone to come to our shit show let alone a former AA, Club F&B and Premiership Player who is contracted for another 2 years..

Christ, Daniel Rioli went for pick 6 and whilst their age and career have been almost identical, CD averages 6 more disposals, more marks, more rebounds out of 50 and 60m gained per game than Rioli FFS..

Don't know why I'm explaining it to you because you aint the full quid. Probably need to get the crayons out..

we didn't need to get him at that price

should have walked away

let me know if you want me to get those crayons out to explain further to your simple mind

Agreed.

But whats the breakeven scenario here?

7th or 8th? That's only an additional 11 wins and 50% of percentage.......... Even then I still think it's a loss, as it's going to be a pick in the early teens for Pick 25ish and 27.

We'd be paying about 20/1 to make the final at the moment. So a 5% chance at a breakeven scenario.... About an 80% chance this goes down as one of the worst trade blunders ever.

Even then you have to consider the Daniel trade in conjunction with what has happened here, as it's relevant.

10 weeks ago, we had 2, 28, F1.

We walk away with FOS, Caleb Daniel and Matt Whitlock with the hand. I dunno about you, but that could have been turned into anyone we wanted during trade week.

We could have walked away with both the Whitlocks if we wanted to.

The Daniel trade was an absolute shocker given his age, he's doubled down on it here.

I hate to say it, but I called it at trade week r.e Clarko. I just knew the club was going to throw caution to the wind as it's pretty much now or never for him. He won't be North's coach if we are battling for a spoon the next 24 months.

However, based on this trade, none of them will be in job in 12 months time if we finish in the bottom 3.

Break even point?

Depends. What if MattLock becomes an all Aust KPP?

But all things being equal, tigers give us pick 19 and 27, you’d have to think a pick around 10 would be break even no?

As others have said, it’s ballsy and the only way to “win” the trade on paper is to rise up the ladder.

Plenty of people have had Matt ahead for parts of the year.

Jack is the more rounded footballer at this stage, but Matt is the far better athlete.

It's a little bit the opposite of the McKay twins. But the comparisons are apt. Matt = Harry in terms of the athletic gifts compared to Ben = Jack.

However in that instance Harry was also the more accomplished junior footballer. It's the opposite at the moment.
Do you have the comparison in testing numbers? I keep seeing people mentioning Matt as the superior athlete but in all the testing I've seen Jack seems to outperform Matt

A few people claiming we will target Jack Whitlock as well tomorrow, but is that even possible?

Aren't we precluded from trading out our F2/F3/F4 now we've traded out our F1? Or did that change?
And our next pick this year is pick 473.

Hilarious. Backed us into a corner after trade period and folded like a deck chair at the draft.
Come on jay317, we got the players we wanted in the trade period and in the draft so far we got the two players who were in our top couple of picks on our whiteboard, we have paid a little more but that was always going to happen, I'm happy with "The little shark" and "Matlock", now the question is who is our last player on Thursday night?
