Not when you’re in the bottom three. They needed to keep adding elite talent until they actually have proof that they’re on the way up.

Their midfield is genuinely stacked. Once again I'd imagine this might turn out to be 6 for Whitlock and 19 and a year of development. Sooner or later you have to back yourself in.

Easy to dismiss the future a bit to get what you want now

On first impressions, this trade looks impulsive to say the least and I’m not a fan

However, a bird in the hand theory suggest they got a flexible big along with an emerging elite midfield and backed themselves in

The only two issues I have with Smith is the lack of penetration in his kicking and his scope for improvement and development. 2-3 preseasons in the gym may buy him an extra 5m with his kicking, but I think Lalor, FOS & Draper have far greater scope for the development and expansion of their game.

Jagga will probably put on 5+ kgs through pre-season and gain kicking and sprint power as he goes. He's a blank canvas for a gym and sprint program.

They’ve given up a top 5 draft pick next year. Horrible move.

If North are bottom 5 next year, that's a significant failure for that list. I'm not suggesting they'll make the 8, but I wouldn't think they'd want their first rounder to be any higher than 7.

Richmond are a very good chance to be bottom 2.

Their list has to climb, and Whitlock was worth that kind of punt. Now the coaches can turn around and tell the team 'the entire football department believes in you, let's start the climb.'

Worst case for us is a bid on Ben Camporeale with the first live pick (28). Would cost us 488 to match. Can do that easily with pick 40 and 55 (getting pick 60 back), but we might still want to trade out pick 40, and look to trade back in later. If that's the case, we can still match the bid at pick 28 - just. Picks 55, 63, 64 and 67 are worth 489 points. So we'd use them all up, then try to trade back in.

Obviously, the later that bid comes, the better. And there's still a good chance it doesn't come before pick 40, which is ideal.

Stumpf an interesting one, November birthday and has some untapped talent and good athletic profile for his size (though not sure on his tank)... athletic profile to play back too, but seen no exposed form doing so, don't know if he's for us but will be an interesting follow
