There's no "fair" way to decide seeds and hosting duties. Hugely unbalanced schedules with double division games, then cross over matchups with other divisions, and others based on your placed finish in the division. Strength of Schedule ranges between

The current system is unfair, but the rules are clear. Win your division and you'll host. So you have lots of common opponents to workout who's the best from your own lot.

It seems more unfair this year with the NFC WC teams having records above 2 division winners, but on other years you have WC teams with 9&8 records.

The AFC would have one change with the Chargers and Texans swapping spots of you go on record.

CFP have their committee to work it out (and it's a joke).

Any losing divisional winners shouldn’t be hosting games
I disagree. Because then it opens the door for why do we need division or team A with 11 wins has a tougher schedule and more quality wins then team B with 12.

Or how many extra wins do you need to host a game over a division winner. Do the Chargers deserve to host the Texans because of the 1 extra win. What about 2 should Washington host the Bucs

Or would Washington host Green Bay as a 4v5 seeds based on wins, and Rams @ Eagles, Bucs @ Vikings

Changing seeding to not have division winners host opens for debate and people to try and turn it into something like the CFP where brand names get boosted. So we might end up with 9ers, Packers, Eagles, Dallas in every season as brand names with 3 others at large spots.

I overall like the rule. It puts paramount importance on division games.
Yup I agree. Just meant normally the arguments made don’t make sense, but this year they kinda do!

We see it often enough where the lower division opponents beat the leaders, rare to get a 6-0 division record. Much more likely to have a lesser divisional opponent beat you than another random bad team.

Steelers / Browns
Titans / Texans
Commanders / Philly
Steelers / Ravens early on
Etc

Rams beat Minnesota on the road earlier in the year by brining pressure, and after the egg they laid tonight I'm sure they're going to dial it up again next Monday
Wasn't a bad game of TNF. Ruined by a missed facemask on 4th down that soured the ending and possibly a comeback

You should have won one more game than us so you could draft behind us 🤣
I think picks 8 to ~ 15 are basically the same right at this moment when it comes to the draft.

He's 0/2 in week 18 games.

I’d think he won’t play till the SB and that’s only if they make it. Sort of game you’d take the gamble

Yeah can't see him playing if the Lions don't make the SB.

I don’t have a strong view either way on the division winners v overall record seeding discussion.

I’d probably lean towards rewarding record rather than division winner, purely because those teams who are getting WC slots in strong divisions are outperforming the winners of shitty divisions in record but also probably strength of schedule:

  • In the NFC, Vikings and Packers have won more games than Tampa and LA (in the Vikings case they’ve won four more) despite having to play Detroit/each other four times. Tampa have played two of the bottom four teams in the conference twice each, and still only got to ten wins.
  • The NFC is more egregious, but even in the AFC the Chargers won more games than Houston despite being in a division with two other playoff teams. Houston got to play two atrocious teams twice, with Indy their hardest double up.

We can say this all works out because it’s cyclical, but recent history shows that both South divisions are atrocious and don’t show many signs of picking up any time soon. I’d bet that next year both winners of those divisions will have worse records than 1-2 of the wild card teams - again.

But even with all of that considered, it doesn’t bother me that much as it’s difficult to think of a WC team that has been really dudded by this. Typically they’ll lose on merit at some point before the SB and one of the division winners proves to be the best team in the conference anyway.

If I was sitting here as a Vikings or GB fan I might have a stronger view though. They are at worst the third and fourth best teams in the conference and will likely need to win three away games to even get to the SB.

Good post, and there are reasonable arguments on both sides.

FWIW Green Bay went 1W 5L and Minnesota went 4W 2L in the NFC North. The Vikings can feel hard done by, if there was an argument for making it total wins and not division, but like I said earlier I don't think it should be changed.

The Packers 6 losses combined were 24 points. Vikings loss today was 22.
Can't feel too hard done when they didn't show up for a tshirt and hat game with the 1 seed on the line

btw, I dont want to hear the injury excuse Niners fans, they said on the broadcast today that the Panthers have used the most players in the NFL this year.

See how many games you would have won with Shanahan's situational game management, a kicker with the yips and a special teams unit that gets their own short bus to travel to games.
