Good test of the drainage etc for today's intra club. Not too much heavy rain this morning but what there has been has been quite persistent.

We're clear for now but there could be a bit more on the way.

Also a good test for the way we want to play. If our preferred method is to hit short targets by foot and drive our opposition bonkers then a bit of wind and rain will certainly sort us out one way or another.

An intriguing arvo ahead perhaps.

You start your season with a club ,learn all the plans and strategies ,get to know who's carrying something and who's not , get through all of this with whatever mechanisms the team is using to win games and stop an opposition , and then your player is able to go to an opposition club mid season and spill all the beans about whatever it is you've been or are planning and how you intend to do it and who with.

It's a slippery slope . Surely if you're contracted for a season that's a mental and financial commitment from the club and the player.
It seems that most people forget that players are under contract and can't leave without club agreeing to it. It's 100% on the club to decide.

If the club knows that player will leave in the off-season why not to get significant overs 3 months earlier (and the clubs would have to pay overs). IMO, not too much different to off-season trades except the clubs get better deals. Otherwise, they will not do it.

4 years ago Suns lost all 4 rucks early and players like Burgess and Graham had to ruck for most of the season. It was comical. Just imagine if both Big O and Fort get injured. I bet you would be happy to pay overs for a decent ruck for a chance to win it all. I do see a merit if set up properly.

Players have just run out and are having a bit of kick to kick or standing around. Early indications from the tops is that it will be a seniors vs reserves type arrangement.

And, like clockwork, Callum Ah Chee is back in the reserves 🤷

1:00 JL playing twos but getting the first clearance. Ends in a 50+ metre goal to Lane. 0-6

2:00 nice build up featuring Hipwood coming up at the ball to gather beyond 50. Gets it on quickly to Joe who brings it to ground where Rayner snaps a behind on his left. Disappointing finish after a good build up. 1-6

4:00 After a scrappy build up Gardiner playing forward marks a cross field kick from Coleman. From 49 he slots it. Interesting. Looks like we are playing the 3 keys once again. 7-6

6:00 Twos have a promising build up but Wilmot is on hand to rush a behind from an accurate snap. 7-7

7:00 McCarthy involved twice down the wing in a build up that ends with a mark to Joe in the pocket. He passes when he should have had a shot and the defence is able to clear.

10:30 After a bit of a stalemate and a good period of play in the twos' 50, Lohmann is run down from behind and pinged accordingly. Logan Morris gets the free and slots it comfortably. 7-13

11:45 Straight out of the middle a high kick inside 50 comes to ground and Morris does brilliantly to snap another goal around the body. Opposed to Lester. 7-19

13:00 The ones respond with a chain of handballs out of the middle and after Gardiner brings it to ground Henry Smith snaps towards goal but it's touched on the line. 8-19

14:00 Lohmann wins a holding the ball free kick before McCarthy misses on the run. 9-19

16:00 Smith intercepts, handballs to Starcevich who kicks long inside 50 where Gardiner marks on his chest at the back of the pack! Kicks truly from 25 directly in front. 15-19

18:00 Massive pack mark opposed to 3 by Morris. From 30m nails his 3rd. Goal umpire barely moved. 15-25

Playing 20 minutes, no time on. Impressive stuff by the twos. Working hard around the ball and inside defensive 50 to make life hard for the ones. Then when they have got it forward they've been able to lock it in and take their chances.

Mate thank you for doing this - fantastic stuff.

Great to see Morris is doing well!

Omfg we’ve found the next Wayne Carey! Logan Morris for the Coleman!

2nd quarter

1:00 Coleman intercepts on the wing, and after a crossfield transition Bailey slams it long to Joe who marks on the chest. Misses narrow from the left pocket. 16-25

3:00 High risk chain of hands in the middle ends in a free kick to Gardiner who draws a front on contact free kick. From 35 he misses left. 17-25

5:00 Andrews takes his first intercept mark and after another crossfield transition a long kick inside 50 sees Cameron mark on the lead. From 45 on a 45⁰ angle he converts. 23-25

7:00 Hurried kick out of defence by Sharp is intercepted by 61. From 50 he misses right. 23-26

8:00 Another hard cross field transition after an Andrews intercept mark goes through Rayner and Dunkley before Bailey spots up the leading McCarthy on his left. From 45 he gives the ones the lead. 29-26

14:00 After a few minutes of 50-to-50, Smith spots up Hipwood on the lead who misses the lot from just outside 50.

16:00 Great build up as from the back pocket they transition it straight down the middle and earn a holding free to the older Lohmann brother. From 25 out directly in front he misses badly. 29-27

18:00 Great smother by Ah Chee sees Lyons kick inside 50 where Morris wins a chopping the arms free kick. From 45 on a slight angle he hits the post a long way up. 29-28

20:00 After time expired but they forgot to blow the siren, Rayner snapped a behind from the pocket before McCarthy snapped a goal after the twos made a mess of the kick in. Neither score was counted originally but have now been added. 36-28

Pretty underwhelming quarter which saw only 3 goals kicked but the twos are very much giving a good account of themselves.

Seeing wholesale jumper changes at half time. Looks like we're going for two even teams in the 2nd half. Even tho the first half has been pretty even and at times the twos made life pretty difficult for their more vaunted opposition.

3rd quarter

0:40 Gardiner wins a free 55 from goal, handballs to Bailey who on the run reaches the goal line but it's touched through. A quick turnover from the kick in sees Gardiner handball to Hipwood for a running goal 35 out. 43-28

1:20 Quick answering goal at the other end as Charlie kicks long to the square where Jake Lohmann kicks one from the square under pressure. 43-34

2:00 After Joe can't take a contested mark, McKenna snaps high on his left from 45 and just misses. 43-35

4:00 The Bears turn it over coming it out of defence but Sharp can't make them pay, snapping a behind. 44-35

6:00 Hipwood gives away a 50 to Cameron in midfield. Long inside 50 where Lloyd snaps a point for the Bears. 44-36

7:24 Nice transition down the right wing sees Reville run and carry before kicking long to an unmarked Joe at the top of the square. He handballs to an equally unmarked Morris for his 4th! 44-42

Clock seems to be stopping after goals in this quarter

8:30 Great overhead contested mark by Ryan. From 45 his kick is awkward and left. 45-42

9:44 After a raking kick in from Coleman to the centre, Liam Hughes takes a set shot from 50 but misses. 45-43

10:49 A 50m penalty in midfield to McCarthy sees Ah Chee mark inside 50. From just inside 50 he finally breaks the goal drought! 51-43

11:55 High risk but brilliant chain of hands through the middle before they see Andrews as the outlet on the wing. He gets it on quickly to Prior who finds Kai in the pocket. He marks, plays on and kicks the goal the build up deserved. 57-43

13:23 Ryan at half forward kicks quickly inside 50. The kick is a beauty, favouring Gardiner, who marks in the pocket. Kicks another! 63-43

Dalions makes a great point that it seems the Lions have been given a clear directive to play as fast as reasonably possible. Bears on the other hand look to be a bit more measured going forward. Bailey looks to have copped a knock and has come off for treatment. Been good today.

17'00 Joe finally holds a mark but from just inside 50 kicks across the face. 63-44

18:00 After a turnover on the wing Luke Lloyd marks just inside 50 and his set shot is touched on the line. 63-45

19:07 5 for Morris! After McCarthy marks at the other end his adventurous handball comes unstuck. A quick turnover sees Joe in midfield kick long to 3 on 1 inside 50. Cameron gives to Morris who runs into an open goal. 63-51

Much more entertaining quarter. Both teams but certainly the Lions team looking to play quickly through the middle at basically all costs. Interesting concept, almost like we're trying to work out which method is better.

Is the Morris performance as impressive as it reads??

Hugh with some ice on his thigh.

Bez with his calf in some sort of sleeve. Has not played today.

Bailey starting in the middle.

1:05 Morris again! This time an ungainly kick on the run from 70, lands in space, Bears players lead the race and Joe toes it through on the goal line. 63-57

2:00 Dunkley to Dunkley! Kyle kicks long inside 50 where Josh gets an arm chop. His set shot from 45 fades right. 63-58

4:00 Rayner dances out of traffic at half forward before kicking long inside 50 where it fortuitously hits McCarthy. His set shot snap from the pocket curls the wrong way and is punched through. 64-58

7:00 Great play by Smith. Chases down his man from behind then wins a high contact free. His set shot falls short and is rushed through. 65-58

9:14 Sharp wins a free kick and from 35 kicks truly. Probably his best kick for the day. 71-58

10:52 Wilmot wins a free for deliberate out of bounds, and from the impossible angle his left foot snap is superb! 77-58

13:01 Joe playing on Bailey in defence! Bailey marks on the lead and Joe gives away 50 🤦 From the square Bailey converts. 83-58

14:00 Zorko on the run kicks superbly to Ryan on the lead who marks and wheels onto his left. Looked pretty mobile then. Misses from 52. 84-58

16:17 A measured build up by the Lions as they play a bit of kick-mark down the right wing. They keep it moving forward though and McCarthy marks in the pocket before finding Bailey in the corridor. His set shot is flat but straight and this game is beyond doubt. 90-58

Dizzy back in defence late in the game. Andrews with a huge spoil out of bounds to end the game.

Not a bad game but I think we desperately needed the hit out. I can see us going into the season underdone given the shortened preseason and fewer scratch matches. Whether it costs us time will tell I guess.

Huge thanks to Dalions for helping me fill in a few blanks and things I missed while I was typing 🙂 He also has a very interesting theory about Henry Smith... He reckons he should be better below his knees than his height suggests... Because he has a long head. Different. I think I've now heard it all!

He was very good in the first half especially. His two early goals were quite something. Flew in the air Jack Riewoldt-esque against two or three opponents, twisting his body to mark with the flight whilst in mid air. Then followed up with a great snap around the body after crumbing at ground level. Went out of the game a bit in the second half as the Bears struggled to make much of what ball they had.

How is Brandon Ryan going? Will he be able to force his way in early in the season or just a back up if one of Hipwood or Daniher goes down?
Showed a bit today but would have him behind Gardiner and Morris in the pecking order if we decide to go with that third tall forward, as has been the preference over the last few years.

Hi gents, quick one, what role will a healthy Doedee have in your team? Allowed to roam and intercept? Best of luck this year.

Interesting bit from Fish's report was > "Cam Rayner excelled, spending a majority of his time in the midfield".

If Cam is as fit as he looks he may play more time as a mid than we think.
Thought Cam fluctuated between OK and quiet myself. There were certainly more notable midfielders and forwards.

It is interesting because I thought he was pretty poor.
Continuously over running the ball and ball handling was poor. Looks fit as though.

From Fish’s article: pretty sure Logan Morris kicked 5 not 4.
