I'm a little scared to set foot there, given the number of guns and untreated mental illnesses.

It's fine. Love the place. Granted I haven't done any real small towns given it's logistically harder to fit in on holiday. But I got Greyhounds through the South last year, small to medium sized cities mostly.

Never felt that unsafe on my (solo) trip, although I was waiting outside a laundromat next to a bunch of guys who'd set up drinking outside (liquor store a few shops down). They were cool, but cops kept driving past, and some guy in his 50s high on something decided to basically robot dance in my face. He didn't get a reaction so moved on after a minute or so.

Yellowstone is my favourite place in the world (out of 37 countries), highly recommend. Southern food is great. New Orleans for music and aesthetic, bayou tours. NYC, Chicago, San Fran, Washington, Houston are bigger cities elsewhere worth visiting.
