A Port poster on the main board game thread stated that he had a theory that Port don't play as well when there's a crowd of 40,000+. So I thought I would have a look. He's onto something. I went back to the start of 2021 to get more games in the data, but trying to avoid the COVID season (there were four games played in 2021 with no crowds - all wins). It's a small sample size of 15 games for crowds of 40k+, but the variance is startling. Let's make sure it's a big crowd.

Since 2021, they've played in 15 games with crowds of 40k+.
5 wins, 10 losses (33.33% win ratio).
Compared to the other 67 games with crowds of less than 40k...
48 wins, 19 losses (71.64% win ratio).

10 of the 15 with big crowds were at AO, with those being 5 wins and 5 losses.
Has about as much a meaning as "teams lose the next week after playing Freo".

What has got me still concerned is we have not had a game where we were fully in control for the whole game. GC last weekend we put them away with a 15-20 min blitz, same with GWS. Freo was lucky if not controversial, Tigers we scrapped over the line, Brissie was an awesome comeback etc.

In fact, and this may seem unpopular, the most control we had in a game was against Melbourne. We had a quality opponent on toast for 90% of the game, it was the last 7 or so minutes we lost composure.

Last year we dominated multiple games. Obviously West Coast but also against Port, Freo, Gold Coast (at home), Hawks etc. I am positive its mental, which then worries me against Port at AO. Can we overcome that mental demon of playing poorly there? I'm not confident.

The game on the weekend was over halfway through the last. We had complete control in the first half, we were just innacrate. They pulled multiple goals out of their backside late to make the margin somewhat respectable. It seems like you're finding reasons to doubt

Welcome to equalisation.
With a couple of notable exceptions, it’s rare for games to be one-way traffic these days.
Mentally we are much stronger than a couple of years ago. I hope it pours in Adelaide tomorrow - we will be up for the fight.

I was at the game and was disappointed by our finish. We are leaving percentage on the table.

My worry is our game style is so taxing, a bit like a boxer, we struggle to play out a full quarter (let alone a full match).

I was at the game, but I was more concerned about our poor kicking at goal in the first half. That combined with their fluky goals, some were classy. Should have won by 10 goals imo.

Welcome the interpretation change. I've been ropeable since the Geelong game, where the umpires just stopped paying holding the ball. Reckon it was a directive from McBurney as he started around then.

As a team who's largely built our game on i50 pressure and front half territory, the lack of holding the ball free kicks has hurt us more than most. We haven't been rewarded for strong tackling inside 50, to our detriment.
