And just like that this is a must win game.

4 teams within 1 win of us on the ladder...lose this game and we could be outside the top 4 by the end of the round. Such a tight season.

Doggies missing Naughton, Weightman and maybe Jones. But we said the same about Taylor, Kelly and Ash.

Still helps, but it's about our response and attitude.

We are so much better in Melbourne

Crowd plays a major factor for these boys

Marchbank isn't coming in on great form but he's had a run of games, playing VFL where his opposition player is focusing on keeping him out of the play. He's a much better player at AFL level and if he happens to regain form before finals we are a better team for it. If he fails, it's back to the VFL and probably career over. I've said it before and I will say it again. He does not build form in the VFL well, he needs to play AFL to build form. When fit he is best 22. Coach knows it. We need to see now whether that can happen or not. Question is, is he fit enough? Should be.
I think this perfectly sums up where we are with Marchbank. Well done gbatman :thumbsu:

The O Hollands wing has become a conundrum. He’s out of form and not offering much beyond his running ability. Will be a good player for us long term but in the here and now he’s become a weak link on the side.

The question is who can replace him. The wing is a highly specialised role especially for us where a large part of the brief is being a defensive winger to allow our midfield to attack.

Doc would be the one to do this role if fit but he’s not unfortunately.

Binns isn’t there yet. Needs to put on size to stand up in the contest. Kicking still needs work. He’s a prospect but he’s not ready now.

Cottrell is an interesting one. Club sees him as a high half forward given he trained there all pre season. He can get lost on the wing but does have the tank and discipline to fulfil the role. Maybe we go back here but when he was fit earlier in the year we didn’t make the move.

Then we get to more speculative options like Kemp who have never played this role for us. Not sure Kemp can run all day and I still prefer him to Marchbank in defence despite his poor game yesterday.

The upshot is I’m not sure we have any great options with Doc out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ollie stay in despite his form which is a worry.

He runs defensively as hard as anyone in the team, which creates outnumbers and helps prevent opposition scores. That’s why he’s in the team. It’s hard to use that ability when the ball is going in so deep from centre bounce.

He also plays a position that can get very little reward on the stat sheet, especially defensively. Hes not setting the world on fire, but he still executes an essential role for this team, and was a key part of why we won 5 in a row

Agree with this but he also needs to be better in the contest at times when he has to go and tackle much more intently when required.

It really does.

I'm confident we will be a different team this week in front of our home crowd.

Also back this team to not have back to back poor performances.
I was at Engie (what the hell is that?). It was a home crowd! 😂

Qs 2 & 3 were a blip. Q1 was scary good. All teams will have dips. Reckon the lads turn up for Cripps’ 200.

Extra motivation to do it for Crippa this week. Well done on 200, Crippa. Been a pleasure so far, especially this season.

I think Cotters is an important cog but needs a block of games to get going again. Ollie needs to find the next level in his game now, really hoping he finds that next gear as a player, admire how much he runs all day but needs to damage more on that wing and be involved in punishing teams especially when we move the ball well/quicker. One of these two need to maybe drop down to the twos this week, if both play one should be sub

Cerra also needs to find some touch soon as well, not dismal but not impressive either atm. I think George is the more in form player and should be in the side. Doesn’t mean Cerra gets dropped but, just food for thought. Maybe he gets more rotation from a wing? Send Cinc to Treloar imo.

Must win. No doubt about it.

No need to panic. GWS was a stinker but we will bounce back. They are a good side and competition is tight.
I know some don't believe in the milestone games but I do, If they don't step up for Cripps 200th after everything he's done for the club then we can look at wholesale changes.

The coaches seem to love Cuningham, think him and Motlop will be the only 2 considered.
Owies demoted to sub and missing the PF last year (also without a contract) has me thinking he isn't locked in the coaches best 23.
I still don't like not having a genuine second tall down back but they'll stick to their guns.
Also can't see them dropping Cottrell after making the call to bring him straight back in.

My guess...
IN - Cuningham, Motlop (sub)
OUT - Fantasia, Owies

That performance had nothing to do with Owies, it was more to do with our midfield getting smashed and our back line not holding up well with Weiters and Gov playing hurt.

Cottrell coming straight back in was never a good move. I get why they brought him back in but I still don't think it was a good move given how long he hasn't played. Also last time we faced the Giants Cottrell was one of our best so maybe that was factored in?

Hewett was another move I wasn't keen on. He was in decent form and didn't deserve to be demoted imo.

I think Owies will take his spot in the starting 22. Fanta or Cottrell in the side. Need to make up their mind, can't have them both in. Now imo, they both should be dropped. They stacked up to none of the kpi's.

Hewett to come straight back in too. Shouldn't have been dropped in the first place.

IN: Hewett, Motlop
OUT: Fanta, Cottrell

Kemp Weiters Newman
Saad Gov Boyd

Ollie Cripps Acres

Lij Harry Fog
Owies Charlie Williams

TDK Walsh Cerra

Cowan Cincotta Kennedy Hewett

Motlop (sub)

Ollie needs to bulk up a bit in the off season, he just gets physically dominated in every contested situation and can't stick a tackle. You can just see opposition willingly take him on because they know they can shrug him off.

Cincotta had a quiet one but the runs on the board will keep him in. Will he go to Bont?

Kemp had a bad game but it didn't help that he was on Hogan with Weiters and Gov hurt. He should keep his spot, would hate to see him get replaced by Marchbank off the back of one poor game.

Just on that, when we played the Cats iirc, Kemp ran 15.5km's

I'd play Cottrell on a wing, not going to be brushed aside like Ollie

Cottrell should definitely take the wing spot instead of Ollie. At the moment Ollie isn’t accumulating enough ball to help in transition and he gets brushed aside trying to tackle far too easily. He fumbles and hesitates with ball in hand and gets run down too. What good is running defensively if you can’t stick a tackle. He’s a good prospect but some time in the reserves and the weight room is what he needs.

In Hewitt and Motts
Out Ollie and Fanta

Saad - Wieters - Cowan
Newman - Kemp - Gov

Cottrell - Cripps - Acres
TKD - Walsh - Hewitt

Williams - Charlie - E Hollands
Owies - Harry - Fog

Cerra - Kennedy- Cinc - Boyd
Sub Motts

We haven’t quite worked out how to play Cripps, Kennedy, Walsh, Cerra and Hewitt together

I’d like to see Walsh and Cerra rotate through HF/ Wing….and not have them in the middle together at the same time.

Need Hewitts grunt and defensive mindset when Cripps and Walsh are in the middle

Cotts must play wing if Ollie is out

Kemp and Ollie's spot are the ones open for challenge. Kemp because it is simply the wrong role and he is up against it before he starts. Ollie is just having second year blues and fumbling every first touch.

I'd personally reconfigure. They could optionally look at Walsh on a wing. Goes from weakness to strength. Ollie take a rest. Hewett come on ball. they'd need to strategise that slower midfield but think Walsh, Acres and Cottrell all will be running backwards to cover anyway.

Cottrell only does well when we would win a game regardless. He isnt ever a player that turns the needle. He is an medium importance role player. 7 touches on the weekend and zero impact. He needs to the rest of the team firing to offer us anything of value.

He seemed to "turn the needle" in the Elimination Final last year. It was his first game since Round 9 let's cut him some slack.

Slack cut. Having said that, I dont ever rate players on one game like some do. I based it on 1-2 years.

Cottrell has proven his worth over the last 1-2 years imo. The coaching staff think the same if they have brought him straight back in after a long-term injury
