Zac Guthrie- you clearly don’t watch much quality football but that’s understandable.
Will never accumulate the 25 touches a game that halfback flankers need to get AA recognition but would put him in the severely underrated category. Should be top 3 in the BnF.

Please stop.
Gawn was well down this season. Melbourne weren’t effective. It’s laughable to suggest Marshall and Xerri didn’t have better season.
It’s all reputation now.
Gawn will probably get captain of the AA team to top it off
It has been a long time since I've seen a ruck be completed dominated like Marshall was in his meeting with Gawn this season

Cameron was fantastic for the Pies don’t see what the issue is. Won’t get in but he’s a good squad selection. It will be Gawn as the ruck anyway.

No Rowan Marshall ? Not even in the 40?
Jesus. He was miles better than Gawn.

It’s always reputation these selections

No he wasn’t. Check the last Saints vs Melbourne game for evidence. Gawn may be slightly down…still miles better than Marshall was

I could name 30 more desrving than Rayner, infact probably a whole 44 man squad.

I guess they have named a couple of half forwards thought Greene would be named but I wouldn’t worry just a squad selection that’s all

Nah for me Gawn had his best season in a while. I think he gets marked harshly because he's set ridiculously high standards. Not to mention that he absolutely destroyed Marshall when they both went head to head.
Speaking as a Hawks supporter I don't think I have ever seen a player dominate an opposition team like Gawn has done to the Hawks over the past 7 years (well up until this year when big Meek went full beast mode anyway and actually provided Gawn with a decent contest). Watching Gawn destroy our rucks was like watching a Year 12 play kick to kick with the Year 7s at lunch time, he did as he pleased.

Yes you are right, he gets marked very harshly. In a year when quite frankly the wheels fell of the Dees he was one of your few constants that you could rely on week in, week out.

Yeah the problem is that Gawn was so insanely good in his first two AA years (2016 and 2018) that when he's not quite performing to that level people just assume that he's "down."

Not better than Gawn but he has to be ahead of Cameron.
Cameron is the #1 intercepting ruck in the comp. There’s nothing more important a defender can do than chop out their defence by dropping back into the hole and taking a grab. He’s been outstanding all year. Marshall probably should have been selected but not at the expense of Cameron.

People do realise Daicos aside that Cameron was the only bloke keeping the Pies half competitive this season right? It sure wasn’t Darcy Moore and his non defending. I’m glad he’s been rewarded everyone is losing their marbles on who will be the 3rd ruck in the squad that’s all. Take your pick on Gawn/Xerri as the no1 ruck

I wish we could pick a 23rd man as sub as I really wanted to fit Chad Warner into this team - he and Young were battling hard for that last bench spot. For now have gone with Young who has the defensive side to his game and for me was Fremantle's most impactful player in 2024.

Sicily over Blakey, Sinclair over Holmes/Zorko/Clark and Xerri over Gawn were some other tough decisions that had to be made but think overall this team is pretty well balanced (if you ignore the mid-stacked bench).

Going through the squad the breakdown is as follows by my reading of it:

Defenders (14):

Key Defenders: Harris Andrews, Sam Collins, Jeremy McGovern, Jacob Weitering,
Medium Defenders: Nick Blakey, Dan Houston, Luke Ryan, James Sicily
Small Defenders: Jordan Clark, Bailey Dale, Max Holmes, Jack Sinclair, Lachie Whitfield, Dayne Zorko

Midfield (19):

Inside Midfielders: Noah Anderson, Marcus Bontempelli, Andrew Brayshaw, Zac Butters, Patrick Cripps, Isaac Heeney, Jason Horne-Francis, Lachie Neale, Cameron Rayner, Caleb Serong, Adam Treloar, Chad Warner, Hayden Young
Outside Midfielders: Nick Daicos, Massimo D'Ambrosio, Errol Gulden, Zach Merrett
Rucks: Darcy Cameron, Max Gawn, Tristan Xerri

Forwards (10):

Key Forwards: Jeremy Cameron, Charlie Curnow, Joe Daniher, Jesse Hogan, Harry McKay, Jake Waterman
Small Forwards: Brent Daniels, Dylan Moore, Harry Sheezel, Tyson Stengle

They probably break it down to 7 def (2/2/3), 10 mid (7/2/1) and 5 fwd (3/2)

Dan Houston - Jacob Weitering - Nick Blakey
Jordan Clark - Jeremy McGovern - Lachie Whitfield
Nick Daicos - Isaac Heeney - Errol Gulden
Dylan Moore - Charlie Curnow - Marcus Bontempelli
Jeremy Cameron - Jesse Hogan - Tyson Stengle
Max Gawn - Lachie Neale - Patrick Cripps
Max Holmes - Noah Anderson - Caleb Serong - Jason Horne-Francis
