CD needs to be taken with a grain of salt, Hoyney on talkback this morning mentions players that miss out on coaches votes because of "their rating for the game" but then they don't come close to polling votes from the coaches. Yes that's one metric but it definitely shows that the eye-test and other metrics can be taken into account for effectiveness and impact
I think it’s important to know what it is an effective kick, so if you kick the ball under 40 and it isn’t marked it is not counted, in that case if you are winning a contest and kicking it 39 meters to a contest in your forward line it is less valuable than a 15 m backwards kick?
Not only that, the stat results give arbitrary metrics determined by CD. Who decides what stats are worth?CD needs to be taken with a grain of salt, Hoyney on talkback this morning mentions players that miss out on coaches votes because of "their rating for the game" but then they don't come close to polling votes from the coaches. You say this as if it’s a bad thing.
Do you think Young should have got voted on the weekend?
Its all arbitrary. Theres a number of other stat collecting metrics that have varying results. You need to have a feel for the game. As I said a chain of play leading to an inside 50 and goal is worth much more than 5 loose kicks across half backI don't say it as a bad thing I just don't think CD and their ranking system is typically the be all or end all - they don't even have Serong in the top 10 players in the comp and Rankine has been at the top for the past 10 weeks or so, which we all know isn't true
Not particularly? He had an off game however he had 9 tackles at half time as was trying his guts out
Genuine wingers find it very hard to make an AA team as there can be whole quaters/halves/games where play doesn't go through their wing.Merrett on a wing makes no sense last year the AA panel recognition of Wingers has surely got to continue I’m putting up Huey “Suitcase” McCluggage as a nomination
Massimo is a pure wingerGenuine wingers find it very hard to make an AA team as there can be whole quaters/halves/games where play doesn't go through their wing.
The wingers that have a chance are really just on ballers that don't start in the center square at ball ups. They just follow the play and rack up (Gulden/J Daicos/Mcllugage etc.)
D’ambrosio?Massimo is a pure winger
Worst users that's only had 49 clangers all year, I'll take itIsn’t this pretty much the opposite of what CD are saying about Serong?
He’s amazing inside the contest, but as soon as he gets the ball forward of center he’s one of the very worst users in the competition?
It’s why I don’t think he’s even in their top 20 or 30 players and why Hayden Young is ranked miles ahead of him despite less possessions.
They emphasize damage with the ball above possessions and even stats like clearance and first possession.
They have Hayden Young as their #1 ranked player in the comp over the last 6 weeks and he’s only getting between 22-24 touches a game.
ON par with Houston who is a receiver off half backWorst users that's only had 49 clangers all year, I'll take it
You're boiling it down to a simple overview of stats, of which the only ones you're basing Cripps > Neale is that he wins fractionally more contested possessions and clearances. Stats that Neale is also top 6 in the AFL for.Your argument is literally 'yes he is performing better in all of these major categories but Im dismissing that because his DE% is 6% lower and he's not as fast'.
Can you list all the areas Cripps is behind in?
Marks, DE%, ground ball gets and goal assists are the only categories he's notably behind Neale on.
Cripps is clearly ahead in Contested Possessions, CP% rate, Clearances, goals, tackles and pressure acts. Essentially he gets more of the ball in tight and thus uses it slightly worse overall. But still leads in SI and goals, and is still better defensively.
Every other category they're either dead tied or so marginally ahead/behind that it evens itself out.
15.3 vs 13.6 and 8.1 vs 7.4 are fractional differences but 8m more per game is worth noting? LmaoYou're boiling it down to a simple overview of stats, of which the only ones you're basing Cripps > Neale is that he wins fractionally more contested possessions and clearances. He also may well be 'better defensively' but using pressure acts and tackles doesn't confirm that. Matt Rowell leads the competition in tackles and pressure acts this year and he's a liability on defence the moment it's not a stoppage. and the gap between Rowell and Cripps is a hell of a lot bigger than the gap between Neale and Cripps.
Cripps also leads Neale in Clangers, Frees for, and Frees against. In fact he's 10th in the competition for clangers. He's going at 51.7% by foot. That is outrageously bad.
Neale is ahead of cripps in: Disposals, goal assists, Marks, effective disposals, uncontested possessions, disposal efficiency, metres gained, and again, having watched them both, objectively my opinion is that he's more damaging.
No, he's not a lock for anything as far as I'm concerned. He averaged 25 touches over a 7 week span from Rounds 11-18 and an embarrassing 1.4 marks a game. He offers nothing on the outside. And 25 touches is average for a guy that plays pure inside mid is underwhelming.Whoever is putting Serong in a bench spot, please stop that nonsense now
Makes the starting 18 comfortably this year.
Very much a Brownlow smokey as well given the amount of Freo wins (and Brayshaw's early niggle hampering him)
Serong is one of your villains isn't he Dan? I think I remember now you've never rated him.No, he's not a lock for anything as far as I'm concerned. And lastly, the Brownlow is a joke. If you give it credibility, that's on you.
Well he doesn't break lines and do any damage on the outside. He's a pure accumulator in every definition of the word. As a dees fan I've had front row seats to Oliver and Petracca who are bigger and more powerful but they also accumulate. That said, this years AA team is going to be pretty underwhelming. Guys like Cripps, Neale, Treloar, Serong, Walsh have all had decent years but just older guys (Cripps, Neale, Treloar) that have found some consistency. whilst younger more dynamic guys like Butters and Rozee have been up and down with form. So if there's a midfield of Cripps, Serong, Neale and Treloar there's absolutely no size in that midfield and it's incredibly one paced. Just my opinion though.Serong is one of your villains isn't he Dan? I think I remember now you've never rated him.
Every player has some sort of weakness. No player has the complete package. Even Dangerfield had his knocks on him as the most elite player of the competition at various points in his career. You're boiling it down to a simple overview of stats, of which the only ones you're basing Cripps > Neale is that he wins fractionally more contested possessions and clearances. You want a player to kick goals and defend at the same time? How much more do you want tacked onto this?Well he doesn't break lines and do any damage on the outside. So yes, he has always been one of your "overrated guys". I'd have thought being such a big fan of Oliver you would appreciate cleansl hands at the contest feeding it out. Oliver might be bigger but Serong and Neale are just as effective in the same roleWell he doesn't break lines and do any damage on the outside. No size? Cripps is easily the biggest midfielder in the gameWell he doesn't break lines and do any damage on the outside. He's a pure accumulator in every definition of the word. Yeah it is what it is, after watching Smith be elite for a decade and just always get snubbed i gave up on the position getting recognition. It is a shame because it is such a specialised position and one that deserves more respect but the traditional winger is just never going to get his flowers in the AA team.D’ambrosio?
That’s the point though.
He averages under 20 touches a game. 136th overall on meters gained. 268th on score involvements.
Gulden crushes all these stats because he starts on a wing a lot but then just follows the ball. He’s not a stay at home winger
Those guys look quicker than everyone in the second half as well because there endurance is elite, 3rd effort they look like usain bolt while the others are picking up their anus from the floor. No size? Cripps is easily the biggest midfielder in the game
One paced? Treloar is very quick and you omitted Daicos for some reason who mightn’t be the quickest but has amazing agility meaning he can break away too
Literally wtf
Yeah they mightn’t be the FASTEST but they are fast and their elite tanks mean they only get stronger relative to their opponentsThose guys look quicker than everyone in the second half as well because there endurance is elite, 3rd effort they look like usain bolt while the others are picking up their anus from the floor.
