Anyone else think that Nic Newman is bubbling under for a spot. Has had a great season , specifically mentioned by Nathan Buckley in the first selection meeting.

Could, of course, just be my carlton bias talking.

He should make the squad of 40. Pretty complete HBF and the statistics back it up, along with the eye test (if one was to actually watch Carlton).

He's not a big-name nor has he got huge runs on the board from previous years, so I'll doubt he gets in. Probably other players in his position a bit more flashy that equally deserve a spot.

Holmes is an absolute lock and throw away the key prospect imo.
His ball use sometimes let's him down, if he fixed that up he'd consistently be one of the most damaging players in the comp already.

However it's certainly impressive for a 21 year old back flanker/utility to have picked up coaches votes in 10 of 15 games and to be top 20 in the league for total votes. I'm hopeful but not expectant that he could sneak onto the AA bench if his form holds. It almost certainly won't happen if Geelong have a poor finish to the season.

With judging Moore re the impact of his stats one of the aspects of his game I believe that sets him apart from other HFFs is his durability/toughness (HFFs not traditionally being known for this specific trait).

Kane Cornes called him pound for pound one of the toughest player in the AFL and in my humble opinion Kane got this one right.

Dylan had glandular fever in the pre season and I saw pics of him two weeks before the season started on the Hawks website at a social day looking as white as a sheet. I thought he was no chance to line up for round 1.

And yet he has shrugged that off (glandular fever being a thing that most people need months to recover from) and has backed up with a career best season.

So he contributes to the overall team performance not only through his goals / possessions / assists etc but he sets the bar with regards to his maniac attack on the ball and defensive pressure. He's as hard as a cats forehead.

Martin isn't in the squad. I'd have Langford and Stringer ahead, especially since you only have 8 forwards

Blakey - Weitering - Holmes
Clark - Andrews - Daicos
Gulden - Bontempelli - Mcgluggage
Warner - Curnow - Moore
Stengle - Hogan - Waterman
Gawn - Heeney - Serong

Grundy - Merrett - Flanders - Cripps
I’m probably going Daniher or King for Hogan.

And maybe removing Flanders - lacks hurt factor IMO.

Otherwise I’d be thereabouts with the rest.

Top 10 Coaches Votes per game in 2024

Heeney - 5.9
Walsh - 5.54
N.Daicos - 5.46
Bontempelli - 4.86
Serong - 4.6
Cripps - 4.53
Gulden - 4.13
Merrett - 3.66
Warner - 3.66
Anderson - 3.53

Interestingly as it stands the top 4 this season are ahead of the 2023 winner - Butters at 4.74 per game and the top 3 ahead of N.Daicos who was going at 4.95 per game before his injury.

For Heeney to be going at 5.9 is pretty nuts. For context 2017 Dusty 5.54, equal with Walsh in 2024 so far.

Be interested to know if that's a record if he maintains form. Incredible season he's put together so far.

Dawson in on reputation? Was poor for the first 6 weeks and had some below average games since then as well.

Interesting to see that two of the most popular key defenders are miles off the pace in the coaches votes.

If Heeney holds form it's definitely a record.

Made all the more amazing by the fact that Gulden and Warner are both in the top 10.

As an interesting titbit, the 2 ruckman jostling for frontrunner status for the AA team, have both been soundly beaten by one ruckman.

Not saying that this ruckman should be up for AA, but it is interesting that both prospective AA ruckman have stumbled against this ruckman.

Elaborate.

I assume you're not meaning Gawn v Darcy. And Jackson was mainly forward.

Not bait.

Gawn had a mare in Alice Springs.

Grundy was well beaten at the SCG.

I thought it was an interesting observation.
Gawn had a mare? The whole side did and he still had 31 hitouts, 23 disposals, 11 contested, 1 goal 1 behind, 4 marks, 4 clearances, 4 tackles. Mare? Tough crowd 😂

Darcy had 21 hitouts, 14 disposals, 7 contested, 1 goal, 1 mark, 5 clearances, 4 tackles. But beat him? Woah

Grundy had a down game and still not beaten badly by Darcy

35 hitouts, 9 disposals, 7 contested, 1 goal, 5 clearances

28 hitouts, 13 disposals, 7 contested, 6 score involvements, 6 tackles.

Well beaten?

Even tho you’re wrong even if you’re right Darcy hasn’t been good enough & Grundy/Gawn consistently elite, even a down game against Darcy doesn’t change this, even tho it’s wrong.

Bad bait or bias, pick your poison.

Just more woe is me Freo drivel. Forever a chip on their shoulders.

Houston - Weitering - Blakey
Flanders - Andrews - Ryan

Gawn - Bont (C) - Naicos
Gulden - Heeney - Walsh

Rankine - Curnow - Warner
Stengle - King - Waterman

Serong - Cripps - Zerrett/Neale - Holmes/Sheezel/Moore

I'd love to see Moore picked, and I think he's deserving up to this point in the season. But I suspect he will just miss out.

Edit: how did I forget Butters. He'd have to go up against Zerrett and Neale.

Coaches are becoming as lazy as umpires when it comes to assigning their votes. Check AF scores then hand over to AFL.

Goal kicking mids have been shifted to half forward flanks in the AA team for as long as I can remember. Don't have to like it, but it's just how it's always been done. If they put someone like Cripps or Serong on a flank it looks absolutely laughable, whereas Bont, Heeney, Warner can actually play as genuine forwards and often do for patches of games so they get put on flanks to fit more 'AA worthy' players into the team.
No, not always. Over the past 10 years, the selectors have tended to choose 5 forwards.

The selectors will use one half forward flank for a goal-kicking midfielder (Bont, Petracca, Dangerfield). But these players actually spent a bit of time playing up forward during games. They're also the AFL's alpha dogs, so it's fair enough the selectors try to fit them in any way they can.
