The biggest 2 roadblocks to 24 success is of course fitness (like any club) and the stale old coach who has nothing new to offer
Absolutely relentless

Horse has a completely different gameplan now to what he did when he first took over.

He's shown numerous times he's willing to change things up, especially when it comes to where players fit. He is very willing to move them around so they get game time and can play around the ground.

Last night he gave McVeigh the reigns, but apparently it's Horse's fault the players weren't perfect in a practise match!?!?

Looks like it's going to be another hot one next Thursday. If it's also humid resulting in slippery conditions like tonight then I wouldn't play all 3 tall forwards as they weren't effective. I would replace probably an Amartey with a small/medium who will give us more at ground level. A Fox for Amartey.

Our midfield mix will be interesting, surely Heeney is locked into a midfield role after spending most of his time in the mids during the practise matches.

Rowbottom/Heeney as the 2 primary mids with Gulden/Warner/Papley/Sheldrick? in support?
Fortunately next Thursday night will be nothing like last night.
Around 21 and under a light sou east breeze at the bounce.

Don't want Grundy in the forward line when amartey/mcdonald/McLean are also on the ground. McLean or amartey can do the ruck work in our fwd 50.

Having Grundy in the fwd 50 throws out the balance between talls and smalls which leads to poor ground level representation imo.

Agreed. We have all year to see Amartey, McLean & McDonald together, but we only face the best ruck in the comp once.
I also feel with Melbourne they really have no obvious backup who would ruck much. Van Rooyen or Schache?

So you'd think Gawn is going to ruck nearly the entire game, so we should try and work him over physcially by giving him no relief.

There will be plenty of opportunities during the year to just go with Grundy and Mclean/Amartey.

On last night Ladhams in for Amartey
I thought Amartey was better than McLean tbh. And I also think McLean is most similar to Ladhams in terms of being a bit of a bullocking ruck type. He & Ladhams in the same team with Grundy would be way too lumbersome.

This is not to say I was impressed with Amartey, either. (I thought all our tall forwards bar Ladhams had mares.)

Good to see ladhams perform well last night. Having our depth players in good form will put pressure on our seniors to play at a high level in their role.

I'd probably give first crack to amartey/mclean/McDonald since they're likely to be part of our preferred forward set up.

I don't know if it's worth bringing in ladhams to play low game time as the ruck. Happy to bring him in if Grundy is absent or if he's shown more as a forward then our other forwards.

Sorry, I couldn't concentrate on your post as I was swooning to your avatar ;)

cAN'T HAVE 2 FORWARDS IN THAT ROLE
Last night looked like Wicks was playing a lot more attacking, pushing up around the arc and winning the ball; Fox was taking care of the lot of the off the ball stuff.

I think I would prefer those two (and Papley) than a resting extra mid. I just think we can't underestimate the difference pressure at ground level in the forward half makes.

No comment on the caps lock
