Champion Data is what it is, but the Gulden being ineffective at centre bounces is interesting.

He has been a bit off his usual this year.
I hadn't realised he attended that many centre bounces. He's been very strong on the wing, and funnily enough it suggests we need Papley in the middle a bit more. This board will riot

Wonder what the strat is with Gulden as coaches targeting near 100% TOG. Will that be at the expense of his explosive speed ? Or do his ball distribution skills / constant presence allow others to get off the leash ?

I think there’s a few things going on with Errol this year. Firstly more time on the inside isn’t wherehe’s best. He can do it, undoubtedly, but he’s clearly best when he’s marauding around the ground using his incredible running and his even more incredible foot skills to overlap and take the game on. So I think he’s playing a little less in the part of the ground that he’s best suited to despite still playing well.

I also think he’s taking on more of a leadership role this year without Mills, Parker in the side and Rampe missing at times. He’s got captain written all over him and has since he arrived and I think we’re seeing him taking more responsibility on the field to get the team and other players involved and keep them invested and engaged which may be taking up a bit more time/effort on his part. Add to all that he’s still so young and learning. I mean, this bloke is still 21 years old! The way he plays and the way he comports himself just doesn’t make sense for a guy this young. So I think he’s still adjusting and making his way to a degree despite already being considered essentially a superstar of the comp. Teams are definitely putting more attention to him, although he’s so good that it’s hard to even tag him out. I agree that this year hasn’t been quite as good as last in terms of his output but even the idea that he as a 21 year old has a “usual” that he gets compared to underlines what outrageous quality he is.

My only thought is that the inside midfield has become a lot more mobile with the additions of Grundy and Heeney for Hickey and Parker and thus have been able to transition the ball smoother and thus Gulden's role when on the inside becomes alot more blurred as he isn't the standout break through the stoppage type player when all the others are in the midfield as well. Probably completely wrong but think its yeah just down to the changing of player characteristics in the midfield itself that has caused that

2023 Gulden averaged 1.3 Centre Clearances a game
2024 Gulden averages 0.8 Centre Clearances a game
I reckon it's all shit , love what he's doing , on top of the ladder and people are having a crack at a potential great , the whole structure has changed , not what CD think

100%. Others are stepping up more. Last year quite a few of us expressed a hope that Warner would play more on the edges like Gulden and that's exactly what's happening. Heeney taking the gun role has changed everything.
CD and the like can only ever describe effects, never causes.

I agree. But the stats just show he is down on CC this season but that is probably more due to structure more than anything.

Plus most of our CC these days are Heeney, Rowbottom and Warner

Heeney is the best thing to happen this season. He's become the player/face we've always wanted him to become.

100%. Certainly not critical of him at all, just think there is another level we can unlock, and free him up

Who had a crack at him grandad, he just isn't our most effective attendee at a centre bounce, so is possibly wasting his talent if used there too much.

We are top of ladder in May/June, the idea is too keep improving and stay there.

Gulden is a superstar, and if we can maximise our best players thats how we improve.

Sitting there and going hes great and the teams great so stfu everyone wont do anything

Not a superstar on one great season , he should end up that way , but very premature .
Goodbye

Hes a superstar in my opinion already, all subjective.

But his worst game is still elite, So I think he belongs in the top 10 in the comp chat already
