this is still about the 2024 season for sandringham

Its nice to hear he must be over his ankle issues. You have to wonder given our lack of tall key defenders why we has delisted? Be interested to see how he goes at Port, hopefully he can get himself going and get another chance.

The team coached by StKilda's development coach?

That's about it, right? Clearly there is something missing, but perhaps in terms of development of St Kilda players (all I care about in this sphere to be fair), the corner has just been turned.

I hope it works, but it consistently has not for over a decade.

I don't consider we had much to work with.
Earlier on our development was horribly prolonged, Seb Ross took ages to become an effective footballer. Hasn't been so much of an issue recently.

We control everything on field and football related at Sandy. They run the off field business side such as sponsorshps and events.

OK, so what are WE doing wrong that prevents Sandringham from succeeding? As every time a standalone VFL team gets mentioned the existential crisis Sandy would face also gets mentioned, should we just keep them in this state of perpetual torpor, or should we just invite them to stand alone in the Southern Football League which is perhaps where they belong?

I don't think our relationship with Sandringham should be assessed with anything but a ruthless commitment to St Kilda winning premierships in mind. If that means we go full Ivan Drago with them, it's no skin off my nose.

Likely a lack of interest and money from our end for a long time hasn't helped. And us just being a poor AFL team combined with the poor Sandy recruiting meant there wasn't much quality from either parties playing there.

To be honest, stavro#4 was right about them being no good, I was trying to put a positive spin on kids leaving but the bottom line is there are a lot of VAFA and local footballers that are more talented.

BJ and co are about to clean them out and start again, which is what is happening. They will create a proper talent pathway, recruiting experienced ex AFL blokes form other clubs and working hard to bring young talent in the from the under 18 league, from all clubs.

He has signed on with Williamstown which I would think would make it unlikely he was going to be signed with Saints. If anything you would think he would re-sign with Sandy or would not have announced anything.

I would imagine whoever it is would probably have been told already that we were planning on taking them?
Hall - Kahan has nominated for AFL Draft as Sandy Zebra player

Since Lyon has been coach, i've noticed a similar game plan for Sandy and Saints. Prior to that it was kind of Schizo .

Have the Sandy backroom recruiting/development staff all been revamped too? Not just the coach?

I reckon development at Sandy has been ok the last couple of years. Obvious example is Pou but also Byrnes has improved down there, Windy has too, maybe Stocker, Coops and Caminiti a bit, McLennan has come through ok.

The only players who’ve failed to develop there haven’t exactly gone on to bigger and better things (Bytel, Billings, Highmore, Peris, a bunch of other delisted guys). Sandy will always be at the mercy of the cattle we provide them.

Yep, Mark Wheeler is doing a power of work.
I was almost as happy to see Wheeler get this position at the Zebs as I was to see Lyon and Da Rimp rock up for the Saints. Sprinkle some of that magic Dragon dust all over the club, Mark!

I think this could be the start of a new era for Sandringham, and hopefully this translates into a healthier academy context for our fringe players.

We don't fund it properly. The difference between BH Hawks and Casey Demons and Sandy is the money that they pump in. If you pay $500 a game to your non aligned players and you have 20 of them over 20 games it's $200k. We could spend an extra $200k and make it a destination instead of the draft tempter and get a much better result. The wages for a 2 year AFL contract probably come in at $150k.

I think it's just been left to rot as other priorities in the footy department took all our money and attention.

As a development tool it is hugely important. Hopefully Brendan Goddard starts throwing bowls of food around until they give him some coin.

We have had it under control of the Saints and as a proper development side for a few years now. Before we let our players go play at Sandringham without the advantages of playing the kids where they'd get maximum development opportunity.

It's not that easy. There is still a VFL salary cap that needs adhered to.

Ive asked before but does anyone know the salary cap set ups for these VFL clubs?

Hopefully the Saints can afford to tip more in and then they attract the quality players required. These top up players might not be full time professionals, like anyone they want to best financial situation to get by. I doubt many could maintain a full time job with the clubs expectations.

220k for stand alone clubs.
110k for aligned clubs.

We paid them $187k season before last according to their financials and $150k the year before

OMG thats disgusting, is it any wonder these players go and play suburban or country footy, they would be much better paid. Thats one AFL rookie wages FFS. The stand alone clubs must be paying players outside those caps, how else do they attract the talent they do?

There's also some financial loop holes that we haven't explored before that will allow us to pay more going forward.

Regarding your point about suburban and local footy, I've been talking with one fella who's been offered $45,000 to play in the Essendon League and another $60,000 plus travel to play at a country club. Neither are worth that money, especially the one who's been offered the 60.
