Hey guys, what happened with Hotton? I liked him in his draft year. Did he just struggle to show any proper development at VFL level?

Injuries and zero consistency, so could but how long is too long in todays climate.

I think the approach is right - we historically have held onto players way too long, hoping they will come good. They almost never do! I think we are better off discarding a player who potentially gets picked up somewhere else and coming good, rather than holding on in hope and minimizing turnover. We improve our odds of discovering good players and maybe unearthing a rough diamond by having churn........

Find the good ones, hang onto them, and churn the rest.........

I think it's apparent we are clearing out our medical room as well !! We are going nowhere if our player availability is permanently crap! If you cannot get on the paddock, well, we sympathise with you, but we need to move you on for someone that can get on the paddock more often than they can't!!

It's sad, but Aussie Rules is a brutal and demanding game, particularly at the highest level, and some guys bodies are just not built for it.

Surely if that's the case Jones would also be gone.

Reckon that his ability to finally get out there in the last month or two of the season probably saved his bacon. Doesn't hurt him that we lack mature mids either!! If Crouch had no issues, I reckon Zones would be toast!!

I feel for Hotton and Van Es, both had what it takes in my opinion. I feel Hotton was probably up against it for the 'one more year' spot when Hall got his 18 month contract.

As for James, that ankle/foot must be cactus because he showed a lot of promise in a position of need for us.

Always a super tough part of the year to see guys let go.

Alright, my best guess at our list changes and what we will look like in 2025, because I'm bored and most of the changes look finalised now.

Pick 47 will get used up for Cole or Hofmann you'd reckon. So 7, 8 and 32 will be used on draftees we're not linked on through NGA stuff. Fingers crossed we trade our future 1st into a mid to late 1st rounder this year. Let's say we somehow convince GWS for pick 16 for our F1, otherwise maybe we chat to Sydney about their pick in the teens. Superdraft they say so 'tis the season to be buying in.

Draft:

7: Smillie
8: Reid
15: Trainor
32: Moraes (probably ends up high 20's pick with bids)
47: Cole (matched bid)
5th rounder: Hofmann
6th rounder: Blakiston

Move Hall to the senior list

Rookie Draft: Blamires/Hipwell/Lowe some other Zebs bloke. Seems like a bit of a token pick this year, I think Hipwell might already be signed somewhere else?

Yes, midfield heavy in the draft but all the chat is about the top 7 or so mids and we are still weak there, so predictable yes but also seems most likely. You would imagine in the next few years Jones, Crouch and Hill will retire. Are Byrnes and Dow in an A grade midfield unit or depth? Seems like there's some capacity for big changes in our best 22 midfield in the next couple of years.

2025 guesstimate list

1. Higgins
2. Windhager
3. Jones
4. Collard
5. Crouch
6. Ross REID
7. Wanganeen-Milera
8. Hill
9. Steele
10. Owens
11. Clark
12. King
13. Byrnes
14. Stocker
15. Dow
16. Butler
17. Keeler
18. Hayes COLE
19. Marshall
20. Howard
21. Cordy
22. Wilson
23. Henry
24. Hastie
25. Phillipou
26. Green Machine SMILLIE
27. Schoenmaker
28. Membrey MACRAE
29. Webster
30. Allison TRAINOR
31. Van Es HOFMANN
32. Wood
33. Paton MORAES
34. Garcia
35. Sinclair
36. Bonner BLAKISTON
38. Campbell
39. Hotton BLAMIRES/HIPWELL/LOWE/ZEBS TOKEN PICK
40. Hall
41. McLennan
42. Heath
43. Sharman
44. Wilkie
45. O'Connell
47. Caminiti

List had 45 players, with Van Es on the long term injury list.

OUT: Seb Ross, Jack Hayes, Josh Battle, Tim Membrey, Matt Allison, James Van Es, Ben Paton, Riley Bonner, Tom Campbell, Olli Hotton. 10 players moved on/traded/free agents.

IN: Jack Macrae, Josh Smillie, Murphy Reid, Luke Trainor, Christian Moraes, Adrian Cole, Lennox Hofmann, Lachlan Blakiston, Zebs player. 9 Players brought in, 3 mature agers (Macrae, Blakiston and Zebs player), 6 draftees.

Out of the delistings, only Hotton and Van Es can really be looked at as youth, Allison as well I suppose at 22 still just in that category. But Ross (31), Hayes (28), Battle (26), Membrey (30), Paton (26), Bonner (27) and Campbell (32) are all mature bodies with a lot of experience now out. Average age of the OUTS all up is 26.

Big change in the list demographic if we go this way, maybe we add a Tomlinson or a Marchbank instead of trading in for another first rounder?

Start of this year we were a middle of the table kind of age profile, this would see us drop down to the Freo, West Coast Hawthorn demographic I'd reckon.

Given we've pumped 50 odd games into Nas, Windhager, Owens, 30 + games into Pou, a full season at AFL with Wilson and King (with his body right hopefully...) at 80 odd games being a 24 year old key forward it seems the right time to bite the bullet and bid farewell to the old guard of Ross, Membrey, Campbell, Paton and the experiment of Hayes and Bonner.

Reid & Smillie could just as easily be 1 or both of Travaglia, Tauru, Allan or Lindsay from the chatter but either way there's going to be some talent getting a game in the senior side next year you'd think.

Winds of change be blowing down at Moorabbin it seems with the players out, will be exciting at least having a lot of young players come through.

I've seen his name mentioned, but who is Blakiston?

I think it's only 8 spots available, 10 out, so far Macrae and Hall in.

On SM-T290 using BigFooty.com mobile app
44 + Hall last season=45
-10 off list =35
add Macrae only
Yeah 8 for a list of 44
Means?
4 draft picks, 1 possibly would have to be bid on Cole
Hopefully? Hoffman & Peckett as rookies with a Sandy rookie
1 × dfa or state player?
No use in turning pick 8 into multiple picks now, unless we don't pick up a dfa.
All kids is the future but worries me for next season, could well be bottom 4.
Unless we can keep a healthy list?

Hastie & Hoffman look abit too similar for mine, but maybe that's OK? One plays back & one on the wing. Or both replace Sinclair & Webster at some stage. Both good marks, decent kickers & speedy.
Hastie is more attacking than Hofmann

Either way, Paton’s gone so we have more room for another medium defender. Hofmann should be the one whether he’s too similar to Hastie or not

Well, delisting the experienced key position players, in Campbell, Hayes? & Membrey & not replacing them? suggests Heath & Keeler might get? some Afl games into them next season. Especially if injuries occur.

It's pretty ruthless list management ATM.
I was surprised by the 3 delistings today.
But hey as you say, the previous method of holding out in hope hasn't worked, very well.
So do something different,, I will be very surprised if Patton doesn't get picked up.

Keeler - definitely got something- but no more excuses - he needs to put his head down and work his butt off pre season and demand senior game time.

If he doesn’t want it - good bye unfortunately.

Well Hayes has played what ..........6 games in about 3 years, and is 28 years old!

Membrey, well eventually you have to take off the training wheels
Yeah I understand that, so Heath & Keeler who are still un-played young developing talls get games next year, not coz their ready, but out of necessity.
Instead of winning 6 out of 8 dead rubber games last year, wouldn't it of been better to give Heath & Keeler a run in those games.
They were actually playing quite well in the vfl.
Instead they gave games to Campbell & Membrey who as it turns out aren't in our future, but are in someone else's.
