Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder's rolling down the tracks
You don't know where you're goin'
But you know you won't be back
Darlin' if you're weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We'll take what we can carry
And we'll leave the rest
Big Wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

When you look at the results between the 2 teams, this season, there isn't a lot that screams they are clearly better than us. I suspect that away from home, it will be a phenomenal performance to beat them, but it appears far from impossible.

Who knows, a bit of luck and anything could happen. I suspect they will emerge victorious, but regardless of the result, this has been a great year and we're showing enormous potential for the future.

To think we'd win 7 in a row, and beat a top 8 side like we did today was just not in the realms of possibility 12 months ago.

If we beat Hawthorn, both Port and Brisbane would've finished above them in both comps, yet they won the 'champion club' award.

McClelland trophy should be AFL only. Just highlights more of the strangeness behind the weird split award.
I put this in the other thread, but they could do it 1000x better by having a men's and a women's one.

Its a Home and Away season award tho
I know, it's just a bit strange as an award.

When you combine both comps it becomes not just a singular season award, it's 2 seperate seasons with only minor considered.

Really it should be AFL only. AFLW should have their own.

When you combine it to make it the ultimate club award across 2 comps, it just seems weird that it doesn't take into account finals.

I thought the old SANFL one, used to award points for wins in all comps including wins in finals. But I may be wrong.

Did we ever get any money when we won 4 McClellands, or is that a new thing?

New. Yeah, that's kinda the point. Finally they're celebrating minor round success, but they are doing it in a weird way.

Should 100% be recognising minor premiers more, but don't mess around with some weird half half nonsense.

In the Port Adelaide AFLW - team to enter into 2022 season, after we beat GC and had locked in a finals birth, and before we played GWS, I listed who we had beaten, - all 6 teams below us on the ladder, and the 4 we had lost to, all teams above us, and I said we will beat GWS and if we get a home final, beat the team who finished below us. I knew Richmond was a chance to be that team.

I also wrote - but we will lose to any team above us in the finals.

I just couldn't see us beating North, Brisbane or Adelaide on the small amounts I have seen of them play this year as well as how they have played in prior years as they are so much more experienced than us.

I think I might be wrong and we can beat Hawthorn, who finished 2nd, as our 3 tall forwards are going to be a handful for them, especially if Scholz dominates and gets the ball to Dorwick, Maloney, Lamb and co in the midfield to get the ball deep inside 50 often enough.

I think this team believes they can beat anyone, anywhere. The Hawks are a very good team, but their goal kicking cost them dearly against the Lions - who's to say they can't succumb in straight sets?

It made sense when the VFL gave winning pts for league games (10 pts), less points for reserves wins (4) and a bit less for U/19's wins (2).

SANFL did the same thing but it also had U/17's and awarded the Stanley H Lewis Trophy. Its now awarded over 5 grades, men's, women's, reserve's, U/18 and U/16.

Points allocated have changed over the years but currently for a win are;
  • Men’s League win – 100 points
  • Women’s League win – 100 points
  • Reserves win – 50 points
  • Under 18 win – 50 points
  • Under 16 win – 25 points

The doubling the points for a win in AFLW is just DEI bullshit. The original trophy was that the seniors mattered more and lets face it, the men's comp matters more than the women's. if you want equality, then its 4 points for any win in either competition and bad luck that women only play 10 games not 17 or 23.

Did that award used to give points for finals wins as well? Feels like I remember that?

The biggest problem with it is that the Women only play the 11 games. How you finish a season is even more influenced by which teams you play against. Hawthorn played 1 top 4 side, and they lost to the Crows.

Hawthorn played 3 top 8 opponents in their 11 games. Brisbane played 2. We played 4.

I was thinking that re the uneven draw and that the men's comp is uneven but at least you play everyone once. I couldn't be arsed looking up who Hawthorn had played.

I suspect the AFLW comp will end up being an 18 game season once Tassie comes in, and play everyone once which means the season will start around when the men's teams have their bye round.

With the BS Opening Round and uneven byes, it would make sense for all 18 and then 19 teams, to have the week off in mid June and the women get to start their season that bye weekend and get all the publicity.

It's quite crazy when you look at their minor round draw.

They went 1-1 against top 8, 0-1 against top 4. Then lost the first final to a top 4 side.
We went 0-4 against top 8, 0-3 against top 4. Then won our first final against the only top 8 side they beat.

They went 9-0 against bottom 10.
We went 7-0 against bottom 10.

So analysing that, there is only the smallest difference possible in minor round results there, in that we lost to the Tigers. However even their win against Richmond was 1 week ago Vs ours early in the season. So even though we didn't beat them earlier in the season, we've also beaten them recently.

So no matter which way you look at it, the draw Vs their draw really stiffed us out of a chance to finish top 4, and also stiffed us out of the chance of winning the McClelland. If we draw 2 more games against bottom 10 teams like they did, take away those 2 extra top 4 games, and win them, we draw level on points in the McClelland, and without the % losses we copped Vs the top 4 sides, we're probably sitting here in the top 4 in AFLW, having won the trophy.

This is just another of the reasons why I think the current McClelland setup is stupid.

I'm thought Brisbane might've had similar complaints, but they played 2 top 4 sides and then 9 games against bottom 10 sides. So their draw again was softer than ours. Give them one more bottom 10 side and take away that top 4 game though, and they also might've won the trophy.

If you were to speak from anyone at Port or Brisbane, I'd say there's only 1 trophy they're interested in.
