The injury crisis continues - the Eagles being the most impacted with injury by a considerable margin, with six players rated at B or above missing.

Those players are McGovern, Kelly, Whitherden, Shuey, Kennedy and Allen.

Duggan is only just outside that group as his rating has fallen recently as a result of missing games due to injury.




The best available squad now ranks in the bottom half of the competition.



With the regular season at the halfway point, the year is at risk of unravelling from the continued absence of so many players.

We need to get rid of that crab Yeo.

Injuries are still causing havoc to the squad, but signs of dawn are coming as players start to make their returns.


Ryan and H.Edwards the two biggest movers in the ratings among West Coast players after the win against Carlton.

Naitanui moves ahead of McGovern to become the highest rated Eagle.


Despite his team going down against Melbourne, H.Andrews of Brisbane improves to take the highest rated position from C.Oliver.

Round 13 (vs Richmond Tigers @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])




Kennedy, Allen and Duggan make their returns for the crunch match-up with Richmond that has been brought forward from Round 14.

Sheppard is ruled out with concussion from the match against Carlton, whilst Williams and Petruccelle are officially ruled out with injury.

Jones, the substitute last match, swaps places with O'Neill who is named as the substitute against the Tigers.



The overall squad can only manage a D rating, but the forward line is coming in at A++.

With the bye coming this week, the squad is now shaping to recover for the second half of the season.


Despite being currently ruled out by injury, the purging of matches during the first half of 2020 from the ratings period sees Kelly progress to an A++ rating - a new high for him.

The impressive performances of youngsters Foley, L.Edwards and H.Edwards see them with preliminary ratings of C, C and B respectively.

In a way, yes. As low numbers of matches played can cause a player's rating to yo-yo somewhat, they come up as preliminary if less than 8 matches have been rated over the past 23 rounds of football across the competition. The method used in getting the rating remains unchanged.

Generally, I have found once a player gets around 5-10 matches rated it tends to stabilise and provide a good indication of where they are at.

Ratings updated after Round 15.

The squad looks in better shape off the field than it has for a long time - whether that can be harnessed into performance on the field however remains uncertain.


Ratings across the midfield in particular have taken a beating after the mauling from the Bulldogs, who now have three of the top seven ranked onball midfielders in the competition.

Consecutive debacles have the squad sliding across the board in the rankings with only Hurn and Naitanui immune.

Ryan will return from suspension but clouds linger over the fitness of Gaff, Redden and Jones in addition to those that now hang over the commitment of the club.

Round 17 (vs North Melbourne Kangaroos @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])



Another week, another handful of changes as the team struggles to find its best form.

Redden, Witherden and Jones are lost to injury, whilst Vardy and Foley are omitted and L.Edwards is shifted to the substitute.

Coming in are Gaff, Ryan, Rotham, Nelson and Ah Chee, with Petruccelle moved into the playing 22 after substituting against Sydney.


A squad that has more than enough quality to see off the bottom of the ladder Kangaroos - whether it will perform to that level however remains to be seen.

Embarrassment at the hands of the bottom team in the competition sees the squad take a further hit in its ratings.

The defence remains awesome on paper, but is currently unable to put that into practice.


Elsewhere in the competition, C.Petracca re-takes the highest ranking among players ahead of M.Bontempelli.

No clean-out after the embarrassment against North Melbourne, just three changes - all forced.

Barrass, Kennedy and Ah Chee are ruled out by injury, replaced by H.Edwards, Williams and West who makes his AFL debut.

L.Edwards moves into the playing 22, swapping places with Nelson who is the substitute.

How are the player ratings calculated?
I'm assuming the team ratings are just based off the highest rated players in each area...? it does seem odd that Dogs with 3rd least points conceded have a Defence rated as F. Also seems odd that depths is rated as B with the reserves sitting as the only undefeated team in the VFL while having a fair few injuries through the year.

....wait, it looks like the team ratings based on the actual team selected each week...?

Always interested in these types of systems.... apologies if this is the wrong thread to discuss as it might be more focused on WCE.

Ratings updated after Round 18.

Some recovery in the squad after the second largest victory of the season for the club.

8 goals and 24 score involvements between them have Cripps and Ryan leading the charge.

Just two months off 34 years of age and two matches away from 300, Hurn reaches a new career best rating and moves up to 2nd in the overall rankings.


After yet another impressive performance against North Melbourne, D.Parish becomes the new no.1 in the rankings.

How are the player ratings calculated?

It is West Coast focused, but happy to take on queries from other club supporters, we're pretty forgiving here in comparison to some of the other boards.

Player ratings are calculated from the average of their respective rankings in the statistics used in any of the eight positional roles, with lower figures representative of superior ratings - the theoretical minimum rating is 1.0, as the player would in that instance be the highest ranked in the competition across all statistics for a position.

Some additional info in regard to the positions and statistics used were posted at a previous date within this thread here.


In regard to the club ratings and Best 22 tabs, they take into account the current injury lists that are publicised (which can be toggled on or off).

An algorithm selects the best team under the circumstances, ensuring key positions are fulfilled, then inside mids, outside mids, and remaining positions.

For the ratings in defence and forward, KPP are given additional weighting due to their outsized influence at each end of the ground.

In respect to the example you describe, a combination of injuries to key defenders and the algorithm classifying C.Daniel as an outside mid (due to his rating for that position exceeding a threshold multiple of his rating as a small defender) rather than half back resulted in the low rating in defence for the Bulldogs.
With players capable of holding key defensive roles returning and C.Daniel's positioning corrected, the rating in defence looks much healthier, coming up as a C prior to Round 19.

Depth is calculated on a simple basis by the average of the lowest two rated players in the on-field 18 in addition to the 4 players that are selected as interchange.

How to you pull the data? Is it all automated, updating each week ? How do you do that ?

Data is primarily scraped from footywire to a local server in SQL, with processing done usually on the Monday or Tuesday post-round.

The output for the shared google sheet comes from an export to excel, which is then simply copied and pasted.


It's mostly operating on an automated basis, all I need to do is make sure the register for fixtures correlates correctly and the data comes through.

The most time-consuming part of the process now is in updating injury/suspension lists as it requires validation of player names that are often different depending on source (Lachie/Lachlan etc.)

Round 19 (vs St Kilda Saints @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])



Another week with a handful of changes due to injury and form.

Shuey, Petruccelle and L.Edwards lose their places though injury, whilst Williams and Nelson (last round's substitute) are omitted.

Coming in are Kennedy and Waterman in addition to O'Neill who last played against Carlton in Round 12 and Hutchings who will make his first appearance for the club this season (the last time he played was the Round 16, 2020 "ARC" loss against the Bulldogs - indeed this will be just his 4th appearance since the Semi Final against Geelong in 2019).

Coming into the squad as the substitute is Brander, who after playing 9 matches in succession earlier this year has not been seen since the loss against Essendon in Round 11.
