Squad Selection:

Round 19 (vs St Kilda Saints @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

View attachment 1185541

Another week with a handful of changes due to injury and form.

Shuey, Petruccelle and L.Edwards lose their places though injury, whilst Williams and Nelson (last round's substitute) are omitted.

Coming in are Kennedy and Waterman in addition to O'Neill who last played against Carlton in Round 12 and Hutchings who will make his first appearance for the club this season (the last time he played was the Round 16, 2020 "ARC" loss against the Bulldogs - indeed this will be just his 4th appearance since the Semi Final against Geelong in 2019).

Coming into the squad as the substitute is Brander, who after playing 9 matches in succession earlier this year has not been seen since the loss against Essendon in Round 11.

If Naitanui isn't at least three levels above the next best player on West Coast's list then the rankings aren't correct.
How Hurn is ranked ahead of him and McGovern rated the same as him is astounding.

Some more incremental improvement with another win despite some late jitters - Hurn and Naitanui showing the way once again.

With another performance of 400+ metres gained at above 85% disposal efficiency (his 9th this season from just 13 appearances), Hurn comes into his 300th match as 1st in the ratings.

How Hurn is ranked ahead of him and McGovern rated the same as him is astounding.

If Naitanui were able to play a similar amount of minutes as his peers in the top ranks of the competition, he would need another category of ranking to be added in order to accomodate him.

He is tallying an average of just 68% time on ground in these matches - or in other words 502nd for average minutes played. Yet, he still remains the best player in his position across the competition and is currently placed inside the top 10 overall.

Put it this way, for every four quarters that Gawn, Darcy or Grundy play, Naitanui only plays three - and still manages to achieve a greater overall output.

The rule changes this year are without question having an effect on the ratings, with defenders that have the ability to turn defence into attack featuring far more prominently this season, with Hurn being one of the chief beneficiaries.

McGovern's rank is holding it's place solely due to a string of good performances near the start of the current ratings window - he is still coming inside the top 20 for marks, rebound 50s, 1 percenters and intercepts, and perhaps surprisingly is also top 30 for disposal efficiency.

Unless he improves his current form substantially however, that rating will start to slide quickly in the future. For example, he has already slid outside the top 40 in contested marks, a statistic that he held almost exclusively inside the top 5 for the past four years.

Squad Selection:

Round 20 (vs Collingwood Magpies @ Melbourne Cricket Ground [MCG])

A couple of changes for Hurn's 300 game milestone.

Another hamstring injury forces Ryan to be withdrawn, whilst Brander is omitted after a disappointing performance against St Kilda.

Coming in are Petruccelle and Redden, who have been declared as fit to play.

After playing his first match in almost 11 months, Hutchings is moved to the substitute position.

Squad Selection:

Round 21 (vs Melbourne Demons @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

Another four changes after the deplorable outing against Collingwood.

Waterman, Rotham and O'Neill are omitted; Duggan is an injury out.

Coming in are Witherden, Nelson, L.Edwards and Vardy to assist in the ruck against Gawn.

Langdon is named as the substitute.

With Ryan, Barrass and Shuey in the selection mix again the squad gets a boost in its rating despite the losses of Hurn and Duggan.

Elsewhere sees yet anther change in the top ranked position - Weitering of Carlton has quietly put together a very impressive season, edging out Petracca.

Squad Selection:

Round 22 (vs Fremantle Dockers @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

WCE-Selection-2021-R22.png

Yet again four more changes for the second Derby of the season, effectively an Elimination Final for both teams.

Another soft tissue injury claims Hurn, whilst Hutchings, West and H.Edwards are each omitted.

Barrass, Ryan and Shuey make a welcome return from their own injury layoffs and Foley makes his first appearance since the disaster against the Swans in Round 16.

Langdon remains as the named substitute.

After the first Derby loss in six years, another injury to Kelly further dents the alarming decline through the midfield.

With the club likely to miss finals for the first time since 2014, just a single match of the season remains for West Coast.

Almost two years since he last took to the field, Rioli's suspension is over and he is available for selection this week.

Across the competition, Petracca takes back his position at the head of the rankings.

Squad Selection:

Round 23 (vs Brisbane Lions @ Woolloongabba Oval [Gabba])

WCE-Selection-2021-R23.png

Continued changes aplenty for what is likely the last match for the club in an entirely underwhelming season.

A third of the team from last week is turned over - McGovern, Kelly, Kennedy, Sheppard, Redden and L.Edwards ruled out by injury; Langdon omitted.

Coming in are H.Edwards, Rotham, Waterman, Jones, Hutchings, West and Brander.

Petruccelle moves across to being the substitute.

A weak squad that can only manage a 'D' rating, away against an in-form opponent that is chasing a top four position.

This could get ugly.

Ratings updated after the first week of finals.

The two winners of the Qualifying Finals, Port Adelaide and Melbourne are the highest rated teams in the competition (and also happen to be the least affected by injuries at present).

After another standout performance in the win over Brisbane, C.Oliver returns as the highest ranked player for the first time since Round 10 this season.

Ratings updated prior to the final match of the season.

We are now up to eight members of the 2021 squad that won't be a part of the team next year.

As for the Grand Final; Melbourne should be clear favourites going by the rankings.

Hey Dylan,

IF the bulldogs get up, will you put it down to coaching, team over individual or will it highlight issues in your individual player rating system?

Cheers.

The individual player rating system is holding up pretty well - for example with the exception of West Coast, each club with multiple A++ rated players has finished top four this season.

What may need to be recalibrated is the how those individual ratings are put together to create the overall team rating - since the change to the on the mark ruling KPP are not as influential as they were previously, particularly in defence.

During the offseason I'll be able to compare this year against others in more detail and perhaps rebalance the weightings between key and non-key players at each end accordingly.

Ratings updated for the final time this year.

C.Petracca's stellar Norm Smith winning performance in the Grand Final sees him edge out team-mate C.Oliver for the top position in the rankings.

Club Best winner Naitanui is the highest placed Eagle in third overall with the best rating for a ruckman ever recorded under this system.

In what could be a telling trend of where the competition is at (and perhaps headed), of the seven A++ rated onball midfielders that currently exist across all clubs, four took part in this years' Grand Final.

Hey Dylan, wondering if you've been able to add the ssp players to the list.

Also, for a player like rioli who has been out of the game so long, how many games do you think will be needed to see his rating jump back up to a more accurate level?

Hoping to get it all done tonight.

Usually find after 5 matches the rating starts to get a good amount of stability for a player - 8 matches is the minimum used for consideration in the rankings lists.

Season 2022 - Fold the Club

Squad Selection:

Round 1 (vs Gold Coast Suns @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2022-R1-WCE-Selection-Fold.png

The club starts the new season with an injury crisis and four club debutants (Hough, Naish, Dixon and Petrevski-Seton) in the same game for the first time since Round 1, 2014.

Otherwise, the selection for this match is a puddle of rancid bile.

It is that bad that a new category beyond 'F-' was required in order to capture it without breaking the rankings system.

Squad Selection:

Round 2 (vs North Melbourne Kangaroos @ Marvel Stadium [Docklands])

You can only laugh.

13 outs. The match shouldn't be going ahead, yet here we are.

Edit - Late Change

Make that 14 changes - Nelson gets injured in the warm-up, Declan Mountford returns to AFL level for the first time in 5 years - against the team that didn't want him.
