We got rid of Goldy without a suitable replacement. I love Big Xs endeavour but it's no coincidence that our midfield is the 18th rated while the dons have skyrocketed.

List needs.

1. Strong intercepting Backman. There has to be one we can pry out of a club with an offer he can't refuse by using the PSD. ( They don't grow on trees unfortunately).

2. Tough rugged half back that can run and hit targets( McDonald should be delisted).

3. Best available 6ft 4 midfielder in the mould of Cripps or Bont with our 1st pick(Josh Smile come on down).

4. A real ruckman until the young kid Goad is ready. ( X you try hard but offer very little around the ground).

5. Bring back JB as Pres.

Strange because so many were saying we should avoid mids last year because the top 5-6 mids in this years draft were all better.
Yes you are spot on. The thing is every year, next years crop is nearly always better to most people, sometimes next years crop is just average but it is rare. I think the key word here is "April" but its just my opinion but Riley Sanders is going to be a very, very good player make no mistake about that and this years draft hopefuls have a long way to go but there is plenty of potential there. By draft time I might have Riley at pick three or four depending what happens in the next seven months.

Last year your two top mids were Colby and Riley, this year right at the top you have Sid Draper, Josh Smillie, Finn O'Sullivan, Jagga Smith and Christian Moraes, I could throw in Levi Ashcroft but we all know he's going to Brisbane. They are all different mids in a variety of ways, if any of them "cut loose" I can see a world where they go number 1 in the draft. The one big question mark I guess is Josh Smillie, 194cm mid who can play half forward or even forward pocket if need be.

To me he is an exciting half forward with the potential to play in the midfield on a more regular basis and like all the boys has some things to work on. His kicking for instance, its not bad but many times it does let him or the team he's playing for down, so fix that up, he's still growing so how tall will he be in seven months is any ones guess.

But yeah right now its not even close, Riley's skills, awareness, smarts, marking ability, foot skills and able to think ahead of the game puts him in this position and as I said last year there wasn't a lot between Colby and Riley, with Colby the best mid followed by Riley, I know some people had Riley going between7 and ten, which I found that insane, while going overboard on a couple of other draftees.

is a second rounder too much for him?
No! I was hoping to get him last year I think it was, around 25, the right age bracket to bring him in, good footballer without being a star and has good skills. If we could get Jack for a second rounder you take it and run, I mean run! I doubt that hawthorn let him go like matching any rivals pitch to him but you never know in this business. Good one Nostra, would be a great get. :D

Dont have to convince me on Sanders, i was banging on and on about taking him. I dont recall any draftees being as good a one touch player as we was last year. I get why we didnt though, might been too much of a sameness in size and pace with he Phillips, Wardlaw and Powell.

Would have loved Riley at the club, I mean I loved Nick {the wizard} Watson, he's going to kick lots of goals for Hawthorn don't you worry about that, but we had to pick Zane, great skills, great mark, good footskills, potential almost hitting the clouds, the only question for me is when he fills out and gets 75 games into him, what position does he play, CHF or that dangerous Bailey Fritch type, with more confidence and what height he stops growing at, you are going to see an absolute weapon of mass destruction, I kid you not.

Hawthorn were in love with him but couldn't get him, they tried, lets put it this way, if we didn't take Zane, Hawthorn would have been high fiving and hugging each other in the draft box like they just won the grand final, oh, and by the way the lovely media would have run with this ,back page of every paper in Australia, "Roos have two early picks and needing a talented young tall forward they choose two mids, they need some help down there at Arden Street", "even if a young Hudson, Locket or even Dunstall were available they'd choose another mid, they are beyond help".

Fact - Goldy played 20 games last year and had 584 hitouts.

And we won 3 games for the year.

Playing Goldy for another year, just kicks the can down the road for another year.

We needed to find out what X can do eventually.

But we desperately need a tap ruckman and I agree, X tries his heart out, but I dont think he is the answer.

The AFL have this preconceived notion that players +32 are worthless and holding back young players... If the young players are good enough, they take the older blokes spot. I've never understood the 'moving on' of older players purely because of a number.

It's just dumb and backwards.

Would be offering someone like a Fyfe/Boak/Pendles/Josh Kelly a big dick contract to come fix the rot with an onfield coaching role. It’s a shame goldy was never really a leader as he would have done well.

Tbh boomer probably would still be playing and would have been perfect. Thanks Brad and the Boys club

De-list Ford?

We're going to need to delist a pretty high number of players at the end of this season to make room for draft picks and any potential players we bring in via free agency or trades.

By my rough count, we're going to have to get rid of somewhere between 8 and 10 current players on our list.

I like Fordy, I do. And maybe we'll keep him. But we need to acknowledge some tough decisions are going to be made at the end of this season.

The common consensus is that we went too deep in the midfield, constantly chasing that perfect midfield group while sacrificing all other areas of the ground.

Rawlings made some bad decisions previously, however, in the last trade period alongside Viney he did pull off some nice moves to get us multiple top-20 picks. It sounded like he needed supervision and a more seasoned brain to guide the club's strategy and how that would look within the list.

We got beaten badly in the midfield over the last few games, and need a larger presence in there.

We have a bag of top-end draft midfielders

Powell
Phillips
LDU
McKercher
Wardlaw

Alongside the multitude of part-time midfielders

Simpkin
Greenwood
Tucker
Stephens
Taylor
Lazzaro

We lack key current options for forward depth, defender depth, and ruck depth as Archer, George, Goad, Dawson, Hardeman, and the other rookies will need time to develop and get stronger.

I think for now it would be to repurpose what we can within our extensive midfield list, and trade what we don't need to try and attract some picks and talent.

Watching Phillips play I think we could be a Mid-Def such as a rollback defender as Merrett does for Essendon or maybe a Crisp (Collingwood), Sinclair (St Kilda) type format. He is great at groundball and seems to be able to pick out targets well with his handballs. This can allow for Scott to move back to the Wing and also helps to rotate some fresh legs in the game through the defence when needed.

Powell has an okay forward craft, so I think we keep going with the forward-mid rotation with him for now. Later on, Braydon George can add to that mix as he has a Petracca kind of feel about him.

Wardlaw and McKercher look more inside mids, however, we need a defensive mid option as someone with a big body to help with sweeping the ball for extraction and negating opponents.

Greenwood provides a bit of that now, but I think it would be good to target someone in a trade or a free-agent to fill that, as to complement Wardlaw's and LDU's explosive work in the midfield alongside Powells, Phillips and Mckercher's smooth moving with the ball. Until we can grab one I think we should get Zurhaar more in there to provide a defensive mid option, but we have to get his head around extracting the ball to the other mids and not just for himself.

Players I would target for the defensive mid role would be:

Finn Callaghan - however asking price from GWS would be too high, if we give him a more permanent midfield role and off of the wing it may tempt him in. Would allow rotations such as Phillips mid-def, Mckercher mid-wing, and Powell mid-fwd. He fits the age profile we need.

Marcus Bontempelli - this would only happen if he loses faith in the direction of the dogs and maybe wants to help build up a young team. Probably not going to happen though.

Jack Macrae - This may happen for a trade of a pick and some salary handshakes between the Roos and Dogs. He would add a bit of experience. Seems he is sort of in limbo at times in the dog's lineup.

Clayton Oliver - I am hot on this one, as he is best mates with Simpkin and maybe wants to move on from Melbourne. However, hard to read as he seems to want to focus on getting back in form so no talk of trades this early on.

I listed down some big targets, as I think we should avoid just getting C and D-grade talent who are just looking to retire with fat pay cheques. If we can't get a big-name player to come into the midfield then probably use our draft and trade hand to get better talent in the defensive or forward areas.

Hang on… you want to delist Ford… but offer the following..
Harvey 1 year
Lazzaro 2 years
Drury a rookie deal
Pink 1 year
Phillips 1 year
Sellers 1 year
Dawson 4 years ????
Archer 2 years
Free 2 years
Maley 2 years

Ummmmm, are you drunk? Or just the worst talent evaluator that ever evaluated talent??
Ford has shown more that all of those I listed above, he is at a perfect age profile, and would be picked up in seconds by another club.
If you had of said trade him for a 2nd rounder, I might have shrugged and said I’d rather keep him, but “delist”???

I don’t even know what to say next, dumbfounded.

No one is trading a 2nd rounder for Ford.

Reminder; I like the kid.
But he's been on our list for years longer than most of those other players you named.
It would be overly harsh to delist someone like Maley, Free, and Archer who are younger and barely gotten a chance yet over Ford who has been here for nearly 5 years and has barely cemented himself in our best 22.

As I said; tough decisions looming!
