Blake Hardwick 700k
Jarrod Berry 700k

But give them 5-6 years

Only way out of this hole we're in anytime soon is 1970's style so I propose the following front ended contracts.

Jarrod Berry - $5mil - 5 years (mid)
Blake Hardwick - $5mil - 5 years (fwd/ def)
Luke Parker - $3mil - 3 years (fwd/ mid)
Josh Battle - $6mil - 6 years (Tall fwd)
Tyson Stengle - $5mil - 5 years (sml fwd)

All of these are no doubt overs but we have no choice. Get the bulk of their contracts paid early so room in the cap remains open for our kids. A mil a season these days is not the big contract it used to be.

These guys are all hard nosed, big bodied, competitive and experienced guys our list desperately needs.

We have to be bold and aggressive. We cannot keep losing games the way we are for the sake of the morale and culture of our football club.

I really like Berry too, but his disposal lets him down. I feel like it's glossed over a little because he plays his role really well in that Brisbane side, but if he came to us he'd be expected to be more than a role player. I really want us to pursue a trade for him, but i'd be cautioning people not to be expecting an elite ball user.

Hardwick would be perfect for us too. Exactly the mould of player we need.

His disposal by hand is really solid, but his short kicking can let him down! Even at Brisbane I think he is more than just a role player, he is integral especially defensively as it allows Neale and McLuggage to play with more freedom. I’d want him to do the exact same thing here to allow the likes of LDU, Sheez and in the future Kerch to have that attacking freedom.

If the salary cap can be managed, then let's at least try. It would certainly transform the team, and give our youngsters the platform they need to shine.

I agree we need all these players but not for the sake of our future guns who will demand big dollars.

IMO

Jarrod Berry - $4mil - 5 years (mid)
Blake Hardwick - $4mil - 5 years (fwd/ def)
Luke Parker - $2mil - 3 years (fwd/ mid)
Josh Battle - $4mil - 6 years (Tall fwd)
Tyson Stengle - $3mil - 5 years (sml fwd)

We will likely get none of those players, maybe one if we are lucky. It's not about money. It's that the vast majority of people don't want to go to a club where they are likely to lose more games than they win.

You won't get them to us on those contracts. Not a chance.

Part of the approach would be to divulge to each of them who we are after so they can see the wider intent. If we were to get a commitment from one player, you would let the others know that so and so is on board so they can realistically see the plan coming together if it were to.

No point assuming we won't get them. We simply have to just do everything we can to try and get them.

We would win more games than we lose if we had these players.

Would totally change our culture. Imagine Curtis or Ford putting in a half hearted effort while Parker's in the forward line with them... they would get the fright of their lives!

Things would change very quickly I'd think.

Short of kidnapping them, I don't see how we get anyone decent. Money is not the issue and hasn't been the issue for several years.

The only other thing you can do with each of those players is to show them how they fit into the bigger picture. That our plan is much, much bigger than just going after their contract.

I'm not saying don't try. But the approach you suggest is akin to a house of cards. Tell them all that all of the others are interested, and as soon as one re-signs with their existing club, the others all back out.

If we're paying big dollars to people, it should be to our existing players to reward them for their loyalty in what have been some really shitty years. I would literally hand LDU a blank cheque, and I'd be paying Zurhaar whatever he wants, too, as I feel the impact of someone like him re-signing will be repaid many times over as he effectively says to his teammates, "we can do this together". Compo picks be damned.

There are a bunch of high-quality youngsters who'll need a pay rise in the coming years, and rather than "pay overs for B graders" as Phil Davis says we should do, investing in our current players will get a better output than having guys in the best 22 think they might be given the arse at the end of the year, which is something we've done far too often of late (and then wonder why guys take a pay cheque somewhere else).

If these contracts can be front ended, we can still pay the likes of LDU, Wardlaw, McKercher what we need to. No problems.

The most important thing right now is that we have to stop losing and fast! It's killing our club regardless of what they tell us. You only have to watch us every week to see it.

Things need a really big shake up right now and we need to attract the right players to drive it.

That definitely worked in 2017.

With the natural growth/development of our youngsters and an influx of just 2/3 of those players I'd be pretty certain we'd be on the fringe of the top 8.

Imagine we got Berry/Hardwick/Parker, that would completely transform our side.

B: Hardwick, Comben, Goater
HB: Sheezel, Logue, Fisher
C: Scott, Parker, McKercher
HF: Zurhaar, Maley/Teakle/Sellers, Duursma
F: Curtis, Larkey, Ford
Foll: Xerri, LDU, Wardlaw
Int: Powell, Simpkin, 1st Round 2024, ect.

That's a far more competitive side on paper than anything we've put on the park over the last few years.
