FORGOTTEN LION ‘WANTS A FRESH START’

Out-of-favour Brisbane midfielder Deven Robertson is likely to land back in Western Australia next year, but it is going to be ‘challenging’ for him to find a fresh start.

With the Lions set to bring even more young talent through the doors this off-season, Robertson’s future in Springfield is murky.

“He’s not in the side today; I think he’s going to get squeezed further down the pecking order,” Ralph told Fox Footy.

“We know that, of course, Levi Ashcroft and Sam Marshall are coming in (this year’s upcoming draft) — he’d really like a fresh start.

“There are clubs that are like West Coast, he is a WA boy — but they don’t want to give up early picks — so it’s going to be a challenge for a lot of players like him (that) want to find a fresh start, but (are) just not able to find a club that’s prepared to give up a top 30 pick.”

Brisbane could make a play for Gold Coast small forward Malcolm Rosas Jr who has been told he can explore his options with rival clubs this off-season.

“I wouldn’t completely rule them out of the Malcolm Rosas Jr battle. He has a year left on his contract at the Suns, but the Suns have told him that he can explore his options with a year to go,” AFL Media’s Riley Beveridge said on Gettable.

Rosas Jr has played seven matches under Damien Hardwick this season for a total of 12 goals but has also been suspended on two separate occasions.

“I think Brisbane’s a club to watch in the Malcolm Rosas Jr chase as things stand,” Beveridge said.

BRISBANE LIONS Out-of-favour midfielder Deven Robertson reportedly wants “a fresh start”, according to the Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph. Robertson played just two games this season and is likely to fall even further down the pecking order next year, with the impending arrival of a pair of draft jets. Ralph believes Robertson will try to get back home to Western Australia, although a deal could be challenging given the Eagles are unlikely to want to give up a top 30 pick.

Yeah idk, I think we still need someone just so that we are more dynamic in attack... (I still remember GWS intercepting all of our inside-50s in the last 1/4 of the 2019 Semi Final) but I am not sure if a young fella (like Morris or Smith) are up for it yet. Maybe we could pick up someone off contract like a Casboult for a year just to make sure we have someone if needed and hopefully one of our young guns stand up. We'll see how Darcy Gardiner goes - he might just go straight into the forward line?

Out-of-favour Brisbane utility Harry Sharp is reportedly contemplating his future at the Lions amid a shortage of senior opportunity.

The 21-year-old, who is contracted at Springfield for the 2025 season, was an emergency for the Lions on grand final day after managing just six senior matches this year.

It followed a combined 10 AFL matches across the past three years since being drafted by Brisbane.

Seven reporter Mitch Cleary says Sharp is ‘open to discussing an opportunity elsewhere’ if one was to present itself — but he will play for Brisbane next year if he can’t find a match this off-season.

Cleary’s report comes after Brisbane list boss Dom Ambrogio said earlier on Monday that fellow midfielder Deven Robertson

TIGERS IN BOX SEAT FOR TOP-20 PICK​

RICHMOND'S compensation pick for losing Jack Graham puts the club in an even stronger position to acquire Brisbane's first-round selection to add to their draft suite.

The Tigers received band four compensation for Graham, which became pick 42. Richmond now holds picks No.1, 24, 32, 42, 43, 45, 51, 61, 70 and 76, with the Tigers looking to bundle potentially three picks for the Lions' No.20 choice.

Brisbane needs to trade the pick for extra points so it can match a bid for father-son Levi Ashcroft and Academy talent Sam Marshall. The Lions' hand of picks is currently worth 1067 points and if a bid came on Ashcroft inside the top-five pick, the Lions would need at least 1502 points and up to 2400 points given the 20 per cent discount just to match on Ashcroft.

Richmond was eyeing an earlier pick for losing Graham given the first three compensation picks applied for clubs on Friday for Harry Perryman, Isaac Cumming and Josh Battle, but its value (395 points) adds to the package of picks they can offer to the Lions.

The Lions will have multiple takers for the pick, with the Giants, Melbourne and Western Bulldogs among the clubs expected to hold extra middle-range and later draft picks by deeper in the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period to have a swing at pushing up the draft board. – Callum Twomey

Brisbane pair Deven Robertson and Harry Sharp are both looking elsewhere this trade period. That has been confirmed by the footy boss of the 2024 AFL premiers, Danny Daly, who says Robertson is exploring his options.

The Western Australian midfielder has previously been linked with Fremantle and West Coast while Sharp is a target for Melbourne. “Potentially, that all comes down to our list spots as well,” Daly said on The Early Trade. “We’ve got Dev Robertson who has basically let us know that he wants to explore some options. So that’s in the wind. “And young Harry Sharp, who has been with us for four years, Melbourne have shown some real interest in him. “If one our two of those deals gets done then it does free up some list spots for us.”

Reports suggest that talks will soon get underway between the Lions and Demons regarding Sharp who met with Melbourne recently. The 21-year-old winger has played 16 games for the Lions across four seasons and was emergency for the club’s Grand Final triumph.

Regarding interest in 23-year-old Robertson, Daly said: “There’s been a little bit from a couple of clubs. “Back home in the west they’ve shown a bit of interest. “All clubs are in the same position as us, I think. They’re waiting on other things to get done to see what spots they’ve got available. “Dev has also mentioned that he is keen to stay, if he has to stay he will and he’ll work his way through it. “We’re also mindful that he wants an opportunity to play so if we can get something done for him through West Coast or a club in Melbourne that may be interested, then we’ll help him out as much as we can.”

“They’ve got so much depth through their midfield especially with Will Ashcroft coming back, Jaspa Fletcher has emerged as a really good player, Levi Ashcroft will come in, there are players coming back from injury.

“He has played 43 games, only two this year. He played in the Grand Final last year and did an ok job. “He played 16 last year and went into the off-season having played in a Grand Final, so you wouldn’t be expecting to con back the next year and only play two AFL games. “He’s tough, he’s hard, he’s probably not polished, but he’s a guy that you could slot into your side.”

HARRY SHARP​

Melbourne has opened talks on a deal for Sharp and is hopeful a trade can be agreed in the next couple of days. The tireless Sharp has already requested a trade to the Demons, who had been searching for greater running power. Brisbane has also been willing to listen to offers for the contracted youngster, who was limited to just six games this season, as the club attempts to bank picks and points to match bids on father-son star Levi Ashcroft and Academy gun Sam Marshall. Melbourne has picks No.5, 28, 40, 49, 54 and 65 to offer, with a combination of later pick-swaps that accumulates Brisbane more draft points likely to be what secures a deal.

DEVEN ROBERTSON​

Robertson has told Brisbane that he wants to explore his options during this year's Trade Period, having been limited to just two senior games in 2024. The inside midfielder drew significant interest from West Coast last year, albeit under a different list management team, but elected to stay at the Lions on a two-year deal. The Eagles have monitored Robertson again, but are yet to bite, while a couple of Victorian clubs also had some passing interest during the season. The likelihood is that Robertson will stay at Brisbane in 2025, where he is contracted, but a move elsewhere could still eventuate late.
