Am talking before that. Right at the start.
The club did not shop him.
He could have chosen to stay and not exercise his option but obviously his manager/hawks reached out to each other first.
Once that became a possibility, of course the club is duty bound to get the best return they can for him. This is professional sport - the players have in fact become commodities. There is no such thing as loyalty any more.

Simple fact is Josh could’ve nipped it in the bud by choosing not to take up his option. I’ve he didn’t, well it’s game on. Club would’ve been happy to keep him and they said so and did not lowball him.

But the club did shop him around
It was decided before the season started that Battle would be used to get into the high end of the draft by SOS and Gubby

got a bloke acting like he knows the intimate details of the free agency herbs and spices when most journos dont have any idea

Got people mad about the club taking their time and assessing the list instead of just offering huge contracts like the previous admin

90% of the time this forum hates Doug and now that he isn't signed up it's a major issue

If Battle leaves in general or leaves for less than a first round comp it's going to be the clubs fault, even though Battle could just decide to go play for 200k a year at Hawks if he really wanted to

People actual think there is no harm in letting a bloke walk through the banner with his kid when it isn't a milestone match. This guy is choosing to LEAVE the club and people think we should give him the honour of walking out there like it's a milestone game.

And by all accounts Webster, Sharman and probably others have also signed, just not announced.
Maybe it’s not a bad thing that we are taking our time and giving ourselves the space to assess the list. Doubt that there’d be anyone unsigned that we would be desperate to keep and that could be poached.

Definitely a balance but generally they stagger these for a reason. Some players definitely didn’t deserve automatic re contracting but creating a chaotic environment can be a recipe for mistakes.

So, it makes it hard to believe he was pushed out.

Yes, Dougal has had his issues but in the 2nd part of the year he has actually been pretty good/ played within his limitations. Based on stats, our defence is top 3 that includes Battle and Dougal

Yes, they were trying to find ways to accumulate additional first rounders. The alternatives involve a rebuild. Otherwise how do we get enough high end talent in?

The argument was never that Battle isn’t good enough mate.

My understanding is that they went through the list and were trying to find players who could bring greater value then worth for.

They still decided they wanted to keep Josh on fantastic money. Let’s not just focus on that situation. He hasn’t been thrown out the door.

SOS bottomed out all the lists he managed. Yes some good players were picked up but plenty of disasters. Neither has won a flag from his list building. GWS had the best suite of picks ever given to any club and still ****ed it.

Yup, as long as compensation is appropriate, i'll be OK with that. I have zero attachments to most of the list, which most definitely includes Dougal. I think he is an OK player, but I will lose as little sleep with his departure as I did with Billings and Gresham.
