Some of Banfields games last season were D grade with a couple of very solid games.

O'MEARA is an auto selection for JLO its my only major concern. I don't like our selections from match committee
Thought Banfield on the wing was a real factor.
But now Shai comes in, finally a better option at half forward.

All going well Bolton's presence should see Switta and Freddie kick more goals too.
Bolton's going to kick at least 40. If everyone kicks more goals too we are going to be averaging 110 points a game.

We averaged 93 points a game in the 2nd half of the year last year without Bolton.

Both Sturt and Fredrick could be in trouble if we get a normal amount of forward talent in the door. Bolton is a good start.
I like the idea of Frederick playing further up the ground, and us gave small forwards who kick straight with forward nous and can kick goals from 50.

Sturt is safe I think.

Without seeing any stats I would assume Sturt is ahead on goal assists too.

Sturt would have one of the higher footy IQ's out there, he's essential for our finals tilt.

Banners shouldn't be playing if we are genuine trying to make the GF

He's a bull butcher and does dumb things

Ryan Pearce Walker
Clark Draper Cox
Noddy Young Sharp
Freddy Treacy Bolton
Switta Amiss Jackson

Darcy Brayshaw Serong.

Chappy, Wagner, Sturt, Johnson.

Sub: Erasmus.

No JOM, Fyfe, Sonny or Banners in the starting 22 but back this young team in for the next few years.
Is Chappy coming off the bench as a Mid or Defender?

I know this is a 2025 thread, but with Reid being drafted and some of our veterans unlikely to be extended beyond the end of next season, I thought it would be interesting to try and project towards 2026 for our best 22. It's getting incredibly tight for spots, and the list will be at the point where every position on the field will be filled with genuine quality. It's really exciting!

FB: Ryan, Pearce, Walker
HB: Clark, Cox, Chapman
C: NOD, Young, Johnson
HF: Switkowski, Treacy, Jackson
FF: Sturt, Amiss, Bolton

Follow: Darcy, Serong, Brayshaw

Bench: Simpson/Sharp/Reid, Erasmus, Draper, Frederick

Sub: Simpson/Sharp/Reid

Notable Outs: JOM, Aish, Banfield, Wagner

Assumptions/Rationale:
  • Potential trade in players eg. Warner/Pickett do not join Freo at the end of 2025.
  • No current best 22 players exit the club via trade at the end of 2025.
  • Fyfe and Walters retire at the end of 2025.
  • Bolton slots into Walters' spot.
  • Erasmus will permanently break into the starting 22 at some point in 2025 and hold the spot currently taken by Fyfe.
  • NOD and Sturt get an extended run in 2025 and consolidate their positions in the best 22 by 2026.
  • JOM and Banfield continue to play a role in 2025, but are overtaken by others and are both pushed out by the start of 2026.
  • Due to his versatility but lack of outstanding traits, Aish's continues to be a 'break glass in case of emergency' player in 2025 and 2026.
  • Wagner is out of the team because Clark is a better offensive player and Walker is better defensively, whilst both also offer comparable line breaking ability.
  • Given the injury history of Cox and Pearce, JL will look to keep Draper in the team to continue his development and shore up our key defensive stocks, so Chapman will be rotated regularly to the wing to accommodate this.
  • Reid and Simpson will receive the Erasmus treatment and will float between sub and the bench in 2025 and 2026, unless either explode in 2025 and their performances demand selection, which is unlikely at this stage. Both will have a role to play on the half forward line, delivering to the forwards inside 50.
  • Sharp will be the established player pushed to the fringe by 2026. Chapman and the other midfielders will rotate Sharp's wing position in order to accommodate Draper's inclusion while Cox and Pearce are both are fit and firing.

I hope this is our r1 23 but you just know Fyfe, Walters, Omeara will be selected.
I posted similar way back in the thread. We must make some tough calls

I don’t think JLo has the balls to make tough decisions.

Fyfe isn’t the inside monster as he once was and his lack of defensive run is hurting the team.

Walters is still clever, high skilled but he has lost a step and is a liability defensively.

JOM just doesn’t influence the game as he should and his kicking is an issue.

Leadership is important but you can’t be a negative on the field.

Walls has really recruited kids who are a mature and don’t need as much leadership.
