True, though it sort of is into their home markets. I'm assuming the non-Vic teams still get all their games broadcast into their primary home state on FTA, even if Fox exclusive everywhere else.
Nope, as part of the new Foxtel deal Saturdays for the first 8 rounds are locked to Fox Footy, even in their home markets. So the only way to see the Grand Final rematch anywhere is behind a paywall. Pretty insane

Round 1:

Thursday - Richmond vs Carlton (MCG)
Friday - Hawthorn vs Essendon (MCG)
Saturday - Dogs vs North (Marvel)
Saturday - Geelong vs Freo (GMHBA)
Saturday Twilight - Sydney vs Brisbane (SCG)
Saturday Night Collingwood v Port (MCG)

Adelaide vs St Kilda

TBC: Gold Coast, Melbourne, GWS, West Coast

Hawks v GWS on a Saturday night in Launceston in Round 3 too.

There's an error in the article though, as it says Essendon play Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday arvo in round 2, but also says Richmond will take on Adelaide away in round 2. Potentially that's meant to be Port?

Also in that article:

Round 2:

Port Adelaide (?) vs Richmond
St Kilda vs Geelong (Marvel)
Essendon vs Adelaide
North Melbourne vs Melbourne (Marvel)

Round 3:

St Kilda vs Richmond
Melbourne vs Gold Coast (MCG)

Gotta be Port v Richmond given we play Essendon away in Round 3

We then have Giants in Tassie.
Cats on Easter Monday.
Port for Gather Round.

How do the Wooden Spooners (having just lost 3-4 of their best players) get rewarded with a Friday night match?
The only thing I can think of is we have requested it for the 100th celebration game as they were our first opponent. The Friday night of Round 8 is exactly 100 years to the day of our first game

I don’t think that’s entirely correct. From what I understand each of the Swans, Giants, Lions and Suns will have 3 games on delay in the first 8 rounds of the season. They will still be shown on Channel 7 in NSW and QLD but around 2 hours on delay.

I think it’s similar to what happens in SA and WA already?

Don’t think so

We wil get our games delayed on free to air

Broadcast deal means that supporters of teams playing anywhere in Australia on Saturday in the first eight rounds will need a Foxtel or Kayo subscription to watch them live, with free-to-air coverage on Seven to be delayed.

Clubs are bracing for the commercial impact of delayed free-to-air AFL coverage on Saturdays from next year as Fox Footy holds exclusive live broadcast rights of the game nationally for the first eight rounds. The AFL’s lucrative new broadcast dealstarts in 2025 and runs for seven years, and it is having an impact on the schedule for next season, with the league working to release the fixture by mid-November.

They've been deliberately obscure with the wording of this I reckon. I reckon we'll end up finding some of the games won't be shown at all, or will be "shown" at some overnight timeslot just so 7 can say they've aired it or something. Like Round 1, Collingwood v Port on a Saturday Night - when is Channel 7 in SA playing that? 10pm on delay?

I think they're keeping it vague and it'll screw people over more than you're expecting.

I get that this is bad for like children and families who aren't interested in footy and stuff.

But honestly - who the f watches footy on free to air television. Ads between goals is the most cooked thing in existence. Grand Final Day is an utter chore without Kayo coverage.

Surely anyone with a BigFooty account has Kayo already?

Look it definitely doesn't impact me directly but the whiplash of having Opening Round to "grow the game" in non-footy states going straight into hiding the rematch of the grand final with two of those teams begins a paywall (at least to watch live) is bizarre.

I don’t have Kayo

The median household has two streaming services, and a lot cannot afford any. The most common would probably be Disney and Netflix, not Kayo.
The smaller clubs and now the non-Vic ones are denied an opportunity to grow when almost all of their games are put out of the reach of perhaps 70% of the potential audience. A lot of people already following the AFL will have Fox or Kayo, assuming they can afford it.
Its the rest who get cut off from most matches - and if they do decide to follow the sport will end up following one of the clubs they actually get to see.
