Nicks has a record of 6-14 in the first month of the season and been 3-9 in the last 3 years in that period. You have to wonder how much of that is because he goes in at the start of the year preaching defense above everything and then opens up the game as the losses start hitting.
I think the start of the year is a true reflection of his coaching ability
Every team tries to play their absolute best football in the opening rounds, with maybe the exception of the reigning grand finalists. This is where teams are at their toughest and hardest to beat
Later in the season, the crappy teams just want the season to end and give up. And the better teams figure out who the crap teams are and take the foot off the gas at times, leaving them vulnerable to an ambush
