It wont be long until the 2025 kicks off and we will start to see areas of improvement or development required for our list.
The first thing is perhaps to look at our aging players and get a feel on what are peoples thoughts on how long they will go on for and whether they need immediate replacement.
31/32 this year - Webster, Hill, Wood
30/31 this year - Jones, Sinclair, Macrae, Marshall, Steele
29/30 this year - Howard, Wilkie
I think most should be able to continue to play at the level until 33-34 years old.
For me the next list hole that will require filling will be to find a replacement for Howard. A player capable of playing on and shutting down the moster forwards. The club might see Barrat 194cms as that player moving forward, but ideally it would be nice to have another near 200cm big bodied tall key defender to slot in. Caminiti 196cms is an unknown? Shoenmaker 194cms is more a Wilkie replacement and will be given time to develop his defensive game. Tauru 193cms is long term no matter where he plays.
It will be interesting to see how the prospective midfield options evolve this season. I think we can suggest Phillipou, Windhager, Wilson, Garcia and Henry (pinch hitting) will all become genuine AFL midfielders. It would be nice to see a future in Hall, Carroll, Boxshall, Travaglia, Said during the year. We know what we are going to get from players like Clark, Byrnes, Jones, Dow etc.
The obvious list delisting at seasons end is Cordy, how he got a 3 year contract out of the club is questionable. A number of players are out of contract at years end and some will be looking for new clubs next year, thats just the AFL industry.
So for me our shopping list at seasons end is firstly a high end quality free agent if we can attract one eg LDU, TDK or similiar. If not then look at a more mature key defender in the Leek Aleer 194cms GWS mould and continue to add quality via the draft.
