All flags come back to Hawthorn gifts. I reckon 63 was a charity day too. Let them have a flag we said
Even their first premiership was won because we deigned to finally join the league that year.

Terrific article. I noticed two paragraphs started with the world 'after', which jarred with me. I liked that there was a detailed narrative that felt like I hadn't missed any part of the recent CJ story.
It felt like I was hearing from a witness to these events rather than writing based on 2nd hand info (as is the case I am sure).

I also think you can avoid a few tautological phrases here and there. 'Enter into' can just be left as 'enter' and in the last paragraph, you talk about CJ putting himself forward for the seasons opener against last years grand finalists, the Sydney Swans, in the opening round of the AFL season'. Everything after Sydney Swans is redundant and can just be left out, I reckon, because you've already established it's the opening round.

'Enter into' or 'entering into' is not a tautology and was a correct use of English the way Newmo89 included it in the article.

Entering into his 9th season says the same thing as entering his 9th season. What does 'into' add here? How do you enter anything without going into it?!

Anyway I'm sure most readers of this thread aren't interested in a grammar debate so happy to leave the last response to you so we don't clog the real conversation with this stuff!

There is a difference between the two statements and Newmo89 used it correctly - don't believe me, feel free to google it. As someone on a writing forum put it succinctly:

To summarise:
enter can normally replace go into/come into (example: he went into/entered the room). This refers to a location. But it could be joining a process that is already going on (example: he was late in entering the discussion).

enter into can mean to start/embark on/conclude (example: France entered into a treaty with Algeria (alternatives: concluded/agreed/made a treaty).

I recently joined Zero Hanger as a writer and this is my first piece for them. Have a read and let me know what you think. Would love some feedback.

Good article mate, i enjoyed reading it inside knowledge always help.

CJ is like so many players on our list, who can play mutiple roles.
I dare say he will get first crack in the side in the pre season.

As a defender or the defensive hard running winger is up for debate.

If he plays back i expect to see Amon go back to the wing rotating with D'Ambrosio.
The other wing comes down to the team structure Cj,Wedddle,Finn could all play the role.
Ward is the other solid option, that could be asked to play inside or out.

Smith should be flattered by that comparison. Not sure he ever had guns like Finn.
Yep I can really relate to Finn. I’m constantly being objectified for my incredible physique just walking down the street to get a latte. It’s actually quite a tough road to travel (being as jacked as I am.) Isaac is lucky

Reports from observers seem pretty positive about Reeves.
I wonder with Dear probably missing some matches at the start of the season whether Sam would try two rucks again?
It didn’t gel previously but with many many options ‘under feet’ in the forward whether it might this time. Meek and Reeves different now.
I suppose it depends on how people feel about Ramsden and Scaife as options.

I am sure playing both Meek and Reeves will be under consideration. It will depend on performance in the intra-club and preseason games.

Can't see us playing two bonafide rucks ever again

Worth considering given how good Reeves is as a tap ruck. It would depend how much Meek has improved as being able to do what McEvoy used and drift forward. He was way off it in 2023.. but last year much more improved around the ground, marking set shots etc. You'd think if we play a really mobile forward line of Gunston, Chol, Watson, Moore, CMac, Ginnivan + Breust when Dear is out that we 'might' be able to try that... just has never worked for any side unless the ruck can play as a legitimate forward.

It's an interesting question. I recall Sam stating on a couple occasions that he'd like to see the sub rule removed and just having 5 on the bench as that would open up the game to coaches to take different tactical approaches at selection. As it stands having runners on the bench is more valuable than an extra ruck (at least it has been for Sam).

Without the sub rule changing to 5 on the bench it might still be just the one ruck in the majority of games for us. Particularly given we maintain flexibility with a number of players who can go in there to provide our ruck with a rest or to give us something different. Guys like Chol, Nash and Weddle.

That said, Meek has proven to be quite a good runner and impressed with his improvement around the ground and resting forward last year. If Reeves takes back the #1 ruck crown and Meek can still impact games better than whoever is pushed out then I don't see why we wouldn't at least try it out.

Ramsden of course would also suit perfectly as that ruck/forward and is very mobile.
