So the reserves play 18 home and away games, a whole five less than the seniors. Think it was the same the last two years gone by?

I assume it's a cost thing but to play a whole five less games must be so frustrating for the clubs and players. Makes it so stop-start and seemingly a bye and the inevitable match simulation with GWS comes up every few weeks.

Must make it so much harder for clubs with consistency of performance and for example getting players some match fitness when returning from injury and the like. Hope at some point soon they can get to the same number of games (or at least closer to it) as the seniors to help mirror the season for both teams.

It is stupid. And the reason is .............It helps clubs at the pointy end not. It helps players develop not. It is consistent not. Players wanting games to get back to the ones helps not.

Just play the reserves in line with the ones. Delete a couple of execs on $mil dollar salaries from head office. Give those exec dollars back to the competition. Easy.

No rumours or news of re-signings or new additions to the VFL squad at all? Only thing I recall was someone mentioning Ben Edwards (and maybe Matty Lloyd too?) being at training a couple of weeks back. Might have even been earlier in this thread.

Still early days, but as of right now it's not looking likely that I'll be accepted to play for the Swans VFL side.

Not sure of the accuracy of this, without any official confirmation from the club, but this randomly came up on my Instagram from a few weeks ago:

Interesting, so is Vicic going to continue as assistant coach for the Swans VFL? It's unclear.

I'm guessing Vicic is related to Zoe Vicic (our performance analyst the past 4 years) - I wonder how. Sibling?

I reckon there is a bit of Stephens in some of them. Some are just not up for AFL with all of its demands. That is why you have a VFL. It weeds out the weeds and grows the grasses. That is life.

Blaming players being played out of position as a reason why players don't come on is IMO just chatter.
Those players that are AFL quality will find a way.
I don't agree entirely. There are some players who simply can't play in certain positions. For instance there was no way I would have put Nick Davis in the back pocket or half back. He was simply not suited. The same applies to McDonald in my opinion. He is a forward. I have seen him drop back as an extra & quite frankly at times he is found badly out of position to impact. Amartey is similar. They tried Joel back for a couple of trial games. Disastrous.

Other players can play any position;
Robby Fox, although I prefer him back
Mills
Heeney
Gulden
McLean, I think he could play back

But I think Campbell is not great back. We have yet to play him in the position he made his mark in the juniors in, forward pocket/mid 65-35. He was super in this role. He was allowed to roam all over the forward line & sharked packs, kicked goals from 50+ & led to the mids really well.

How would you like Chad minding their dangerous small forward? I doubt you would & nor would he. He is as loose as a Goose in the mids, imagine how many goals the small forwards would kick on him.

Will could play back but why? His forward pressure is enormous & he creates turnovers through manic pressure. He might not get the tackle that draws the free but one of his teammates will.

So, I believe that your premise that any player who can play AFL should be able to play anywhere is flawed. While it allows for flexibility It does not allow for a player being suitable for a position.

While I agree with you 💯 I don't think that's really what Rusty was saying, more that there could/should be a place in VFL where we could see more of their best.

Thanks Mr C ,shouldn't be nessesary .
McPointy will be interesting and of more interest would be how it came about . One of my issues with Macca is that he's never coached his own team and needed to leave for a couple of years
Neither had Laidler & Kennelly. But they did a pretty good job. Jeremy not so good on his own. He will be assisted by Adam Kennedy who was mixed up with the development program mentoring young players at GWS last year. I think this is exciting as they might actually bring some new ideas.

I guess if you want to see the VFL team flogged by 100pts each week…

I get that it can be hard for a player to get much ball in the forward line the way we’ve played in the last two seasons. But if they can’t find it a bit playing in a peppered defence, they ain’t gonna find it in the heat of the on-ball contest.

I shudder at the idea of the timid Vickery starting at centre bounces.
Magor was a small forward played in defence. He wasn't bad back there but not a natural position for him. He got lost on some occasions. Look, no matter who was playing onball we got flogged anyway. The coaching did nothing to mirror the AFL side under Trusslove. I was totally confused by his coaching. Not only that, the centre clearance & stoppage work was diabolical & didn't make any sense. So bloody loose & uncommitted at stoppages. That put the poor defence under constant pressure. It wouldn't matter who went into the centre bounces, around stoppages, they were on a hiding to nothing. At one time McAndrew was rucking & I looked out to the wing & Green is playing there. The mind boggles. I stopped looking in the end becauswe the coaching was embarrassing. Every time we would get some cohesion, he would start this go slow shite & we would start passing the ball around only to turn it over & get scored against.

At another stage Arnold was playing as an intercept defender & Vickery was at FB. WTF? At least he kept Edwards at CHB for some of the season. Some of the match ups were mind boggling. Talls on smalls, smalls on talls. Confusing.

In actual fact Liz it is difficult to find a kick in a defence that is under pressure all the time. VERY DIFFICULT. that is because the ball is coming in so quick & to your opponent's advantage, you have to almost be Superman or Superwoman to get a kick. Then you are under pressure immediately you get the ball because your mids have't run down yet to help. The other thing is that in the mids the ball comes your way far more often anyway, if you are good enough, you will get it. If you are playing, out of position in defence, being taught a new position you are up shit creek without a paddle. Most of our defenders were under the pump all the time because the mids got shite on, no matterv who was in there. Trusslove didn't help anyone's development.
