Did We Get The Pick Right?

The only thing that concerns me is his highlight package looks like a young & all the articles are placing him to be the next Dusty. Hard act to follow & will get annoying fast if he doesn't hit the ground running. I have a slight concern that we could look back & feel we picked too heavily on the "Dusty Rememberries ". Dusty averaged 21 touches a game in u18
s, not 11.

In saying all that, his highlight package showed a player who can lead & fight. His ceiling is a much needed identity to this team, which we desperately need. If there is a "Dusty Clone" in the draft then it makes a hell of a lot of sense for him to go #1.

Anyone got opinions on if his low ball count is a concern - does he have a tank?

The 11 touch average was just 3 x games at the champs … mostly forward. Averaged 11 touches, 5 marks, 4 tackles and 1.3 goals per game.

8 x Coates league games in 2023 as an underager he averaged 20.3 disposals, 3 marks, 7.5 tackles and 0.8 goals per game.

In 4 x Coates games in 2024 it was 23.8, 5.8 marks, 3 tackles and 0.25 goals.

All this without any pre-seasons due to cricket and with multiple injuries.

I wouldn’t be concerned about his ball winning or fitness levels once he’s got a few pre-seasons under his belt. Remember, Petracca took until about his 6th season to hit the midfield full-time.

Feels like it took a similar amount of time before Dusty played full time mid as well and even DeGoey and both only lasted a season or two before thier respective coaches put them back into a mid/fwd split

I think he looked more explosive and bit more bursty in some of the 2023 footage. Perhaps the injuries/fitness played into that? He also looks a touch lighter than he did in 2024.

Check out 3.10 in this second one. Very Dusty like evasiveness and strength. However, Dusty finishes that goal with ease. Lalor does need to work a bit on his finishing around goals I think

Also 4.10 ridiculous mark and athleticism. Looks like Harley Reid/Petrecca on this play.

Looking forward to watching young Sam after a couple of pre-seasons. He looks pretty special now, so can only imagine how good he might become after being in a professional environment for a few seasons. Hopefully he can show us some glimpses during the next season & get us all excited for the future.

Needs to drop a few kegs which won’t be hard to do

Looking forward to seeing his running capacity because if he can’t get that half decent watch out

An AFL environment is exactly what Sam Lalor needs, the amount of improvement in fitness that they will be able to put into him will be massive. perfect player to plot in the forward line while he builds an endurance base.

I see him playing Round 1 if he is fit & has no setbacks, same with Smillie.
We didn't get these players to play VFL, ofc it's a balancing act but not getting 50-70 games into Lalor & Smillie fast would be a mistake.

Sure. But his draft analysis all clearly seem to state that Endurance & Durability is his biggest place of improvement. So even though what you say might be true - if he lacks overall fitness (endurance) and match conditioning ( durability issues), then the concern is pretty probably still warranted around his fitness & conditioning etc.

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Durability
  • Endurance

"...
Lalor racked up 34 touches in his first outing for GWV in 2024, and while his numbers were low at times, has proven capable of big hauls as a primary on-baller.

An arduous preseason faces Lalor in order to rebuild his endurance base, and the durability to become a full-time AFL midfielder. He showed improvements to his outside game at times this year, but was a touch underdone given his repeat injury setbacks - hence the bulk blocks of forward time. Evasiveness is another area Lalor is looking to improve on, so as to not solely rely on his physical gifts to escape the contest."

Every young player has their spot of improvement, & his looks pretty safely to be fitness/conditioning as both durability & endurance are generally a direct relation to each other.

Sam Lalor is going to be better than Josh Smillie, if that's at all possible. He will go on to win 7 flags 4 Norm Smiths 4 Brownlows and 9 B&F

I’ve noticed you are very bullish on our new draftees across a number of threads mate

I know you are excited but might be worth being more grounded in our expectations :moustache:

Sorry mate but you've got to celebrate them and show real confidence in their potential if you want to be able to post opinions about them without shitting on anyone's parade
