Past #23: Kieran Harper - delisted by the club (29/10) - will miss '16 VAFA season, surgery on ankle

Have a look at his highlights, very rarely do you get that sort of space at VFL level with smaller grounds and poorer conditions. In my eyes he is one of those players that will benefit from having better footballers around him.

It should be mentioned that this year he has been playing up the ground mostly on a wing at werribee, which explains why he isn't having much of an impact on the scoreboard. Get him in the AFL side and play him around the forward 50 like Nahas has been.

What's noticeable is how the better players, like Boomer, LT and Wellsy bring Harps into it with anticipation and skill. He then adds the icing with the goal kicking.

I miss Harps. :(

I've lost a lot of confidence in him, no doubting his skill but his lack of speed and strength too often gets exposed at AFL level

My only surprise with Wright was that he was playing 1's so early in the season, coming from a fair way back post his latest shoulder surgery and subsequent late start to preseason. The impression he left supporters was underwhelming and did him no justice. I think a fully fit Wright, and a confident one, is an asset to our side. I'm glad to see him playing so well in the magoos.

Exactly this. The counter attacking style we play suits him to a tee. He is a good kick too. It's like for like and it might only take a soft goal to get his confidence up and going and then he's away.

Jacobs might get it 52 times but if he goes at 25% & kieran goes at 90% for his 15, they have had the same amount of effective possessions so we can justify it that way.

LA & Jacobs may get it, but they don't know what to do once they do.

nearly all those goals were when the opposition had a run on and we needed someone to step up and kick a goal to stop the momentum from sher pace/talent.

Yep and I don't think the premise of this thread has anything to do with "is he the most deserving of a recall?" but everything to do with "is he the best equipped to replace Nahas?"

The answer to the former is an absolute NO.

The fact is he has weapons and abilities few other players possess on our list. If his lingering injury issues are what stifled him for so long, and he's now confident he's no longer restricted to such a degree, then this could well be a perfect time to "unleash" him at AFL level again.

If he can provide forward pressure and a couple of goals he'd have covered Nahas' loss.

What that video demonstrates is the reason I have been so forthright in my calls in this thread to get him back in. The guy is a super talent. How could you not want him in our underperforming forward line?

How easily people forget - fair enough, we all have lapses. The ones bagging him who have never really watched him play are not as easily excused.

I'm sorry but what were you expecting in a public forum? With the limited amount of insight fans and supporters naturally receive surely that's poor on your behalf not to expect sarcastic remarks like that especially when the club shows it's supporters variations to how they manage their players and report it.

Again, you are comprehensively proving my main point, not countering it. We supporters are not in possession of the full set of facts and yet people like you decide that the club has been medically negligent with Tarrant, and Harper is not tracking to internal expectations.

People like you also implicitly or explicitly whine about the club not providing "supporters" with full information. This demonstrates a very loose grasp on the reality of how organisations deal with proprietary information. We are one of 18 clubs who will not publicly disclose all that is happening internally, as a more informed rival is a more effective rival. It is therefore pathetically naive to criticise the club for not looking after "supporters" by disclosing full information about player injuries, etc.

The sarcasm, meh, you walked straight into it. If it makes you feel better, I apologise.

Harper is one of those who showed so much early that we all got caught up in the fun and didn't give him the benefit of a development phase. The last year and a half has been pretty much defined by his injuries that have curtailed him and a phase where he has been learning to round his game. I know that coaches take on board training form as much as they do VFL form, so would be interesting to know how he looks when working with the full squad, whether he has a strong presence or not. I would think he will play games this year and whether he performs well or not has another year on his contract and more than enough potential to justify it. Would be plenty happy to see him run out at Brissie simply because he is great to watch, but suspect he won't get a gig yet.

I remember watching those 2011/12 games where Harps was beginning to tear holes in teams and thinking "This kid is going to be the MAN in a few years".

His inability to find form has been really disappointing albeit due to injuries and interrupted pre-seasons and the lack of confidence that ensues.

I'd play him while Nahas is out, we have 5 or 6 games in the next 8 where even if he underperformed he wouldn't be a liability.
Playing this guy for a few weeks isn't going to cost us a premiership - it might win us one in a couple years though.

And let's be clear, for all Nahas has been a pleasant surprise, we need to cover 14 disposals, 3 and a half tackles and just under a goal a game (along with some disappointing missed shots). Completely agree that Jacobs/LA/Dumont have a stronger case right now and pushing Adams forward sorts out the structure for the time being. He surely has to see the 6-7 week window of opportunity ahead of him.

Scott said Kieran Harper and Turner would be considered as replacements, while Taylor Garner (hamstring), who is yet to play a game at any level since North's NAB Cup loss to Hawthorn in February, would be another ideal replacement after he makes his imminent return.

But Scott suggested Harper, who has not played a senior game since round three last season, had not yet done enough at VFL level to force his way back into North's team.

"He's shown real glimpses in the VFL, but we'd like to see him put that together for a whole game before we bring him in," Scott said.

"We certainly need him and we need him back playing his best, so we'll look for a bit better form in the VFL before we bring him into the AFL side."

Strangely worded article. It says that Scott said Harper and Turner will be considered, but then the quote suggests Harper won't be considered. Interested to watch the press conference when it goes up.

Time to unleash the Turner?

Is Turner a red herring and, along with the comments about Harps needing to find better form, attempts at deflection from a possible Harper call up? Or is Turner a real shot? Be happy either way.

I will dead set lose it with happiness if Turner plays... With a tinge of disappointment because it's interstate and I can't see it.
